From the Founder ….

The year behind us has indeed been a big year again, with leaps and strides into new programmes and new challenges. It is indeed heartening to see the happiness and relief of debt stricken people once they are relieved from interest rates of 20 to 25% to quote just one of our new endeavours. Much as it is rewarding to widen the scope of support to more beneficiaries, it cannot be denied that it demands much more strength on our side. It is not a matter of finances, it is a question of our heart and capacity of engagement. Unless we are able to feel a bond to all our groups and members of the Shishu Family, we have to accept that we have transgressed the limits of our Shishu Mandir aim, and we are about to become an institution.

Time and again the request for expansion has been voiced, especially as we are on the threshold of setting up a new Children’s Home. In this respect the vast site which we acquired proves to be highly seductive. Nonetheless my biggest concern and worry is the dilution of the quality of care which we give to our children. If we cannot instil a value system in our children within a period of one year or even in years, we have to accept the fact that our capacity to guide the children has its limits, and their requirements are larger than our available resources. A critical look at our capacity to bring about a change in our children reveals that we have not succeeded to the extent which would be desirable. No doubt, it is a Herculean task which we have loaded upon our shoulders, for which reason we have to be doubly conscious when the increase in the number of children is taken up. Therefore, nothing can convince me of the contrary to the vision of “Small is beautiful” and “Quality above all.”

Society Report

This is the 27th Annual General Meeting of the Shishu Mandir Society. During this year we had 8 EC

meetings which carried important decisions.

1. Change of Higher Education Policy

Our experience had shown that the qualifying criteria were too soft to meet the demands of the

college demands, as many students failed in PUC 1st

year itself.

2. Policy of Home Admission

It was decided that admissions should be done twice per year, namely in June/July and

December/January when Hella will also be present.

The year that passed was all but uneventful with new challenges confronting us on the way. Speaking of

challenges, the number of members (I repeat, only the number of members) of the Society was

challenged and shrunk to 19. Taking the bull by its horns was the need of the hour and a new

membership drive for fresh blood was initiated of which the first signs of success are visible today.

As a Society we have had to make changes, some of which very contrary to our bygone policy.

To start with changes, the Society realized how difficult it was for the children of the Home to cope with

hours of needless shuttling between the Home and the School. Furthermore, it seems that a bigger

concentration of our core activities in one place could ease the administrative burden. It was decided

that the Home should be shifted to the vicinity of the School and that the current Home buildings either

be sold or used for administrative activities in future. Our children will benefit from more space, a better

environment and a shorter march to school.

Identifying a suitable piece of land was the next logical, yet Herculean task, undertaken by Mr. Anand

and Mr. Venu. Upon finding an ideally located plot within 1.5 km from the school it was ably bargained

down to a fair price by Mr. Seshagiri. Today, the land has been converted to a residential use and will be

registered to Shishu Mandir shortly.

To build a new Home a Committee was formed which will base its assumptions for the precise

requirements of our new Home on the recommendation of the German Society. This process is currently

under way and the opening of the new home has been dated at 1st Jan 2013.

Since having acquired the land for the new Home, the property at Sulubele has become obsolete. The

Society wishes to sell the property and is looking for a buyer. In this process, the correct boundary was

demarcated and an approach road with storm water drains constructed.

Before concluding, this report would be incomplete and inappropriate if we do not take a moment to

consider the ever hearing ear, the ever ready shoulder, the ever smiling eyes and the untiring work of

one amongst us. Thank you, Mr. Anand.

The Home A Staff I Main Staff

We had 16 staff members to do the work for roughly 30 children. Since we had a shortage of night duty staff, we transferred Mrs. Indira from the school for this duty. Since we had no volunteers from June to August 2009, we had to take the help of our old students Kumari, Savitha and Bhuvaneswari. Mitu, who had joined as the Educator in April 2009, was taken in on a part-time basis. Although she was very loving, she couldn’t work with us for long, as she found it difficult to deal with problems related to group dynamics. She left us in April this year.

II Volunteers

Except for the three months mentioned, we have been having volunteers from European countries, who usually are very child-oriented and help with duties in the Home as well as with extra-curricular activities. There were five volunteers this year, out of whom two are still continuing.

B Children I Survey

This year we cared for a total of 45 children. Of these, 26 were for Care and Protection and 19 were for Adoption. At present, we have 27 children in the home. Three children left the home, while four others were newly admitted.

II New children

Sandhya R. is a 9-year old girl who was largely neglected by her parents. After joining the Home, she has improved her performance in school considerably.

Kavitha N., also a victim of parental neglect, took a long time to adjust to the limitations that a home imposes. The transformation that has ultimately taken place in her testifies that Shishu Home has offered her something she needed and found.

Before joining our Home, Kavya M.G. had been abandoned by her father and was moved from place to place by her mentally-disturbed mother. Kavya showed a great enthusiasm for continuing in our school which became a motivating factor to move her into our Home.

When Akash S.’s father disappeared from the family, his mother moved the family to Kolar. Since he expressed a desire to return to our school, and as Rayappa needed a companion urgently, we invited him to the Home and he accepted happily.

C Services and Facilities 1 Educational Support Navya , an 11-year-old child with mental and physical deficiencies, was placed in a school for children with special needs. According to an assessment by Spastic Society she has an I.Q. of 52 by which she performs on a level of a 5.2-year-old child. Suman R. , a 16-year-old girl, was assessed by the Dyslexia Association and was found to have a severe learning disability for which she is eligible to get a concession in her SSLC exam. She

meanwhile left the school and is in search of a clerical job for which she is qualified due to her English knowledge.

Rayappa and Ruth were assessed by the Spastic Society and were diagnosed with hyperactivity and lack of concentration. They were advised to be under medication which is being followed since then.

Lakshmi , a 9-year old girl, was found to have severe behavioural problems. She was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD. Verena, a special pedagogue from Germany, is working exclusively with the child, which has brought about a tremendous improvement.

Meena, a 16-year-old girl, showed extreme difficulties in adjusting to the rules of our Home. She still has not found her balance, but at least managed to get promoted.

Guru was given a computer for her last year of her diploma course so that she could practise what she had learnt in the institute.

2 Special Facilities

• All small children till Std. I were transported to school by our own van.

• Geetha’s dialysis treatment falls on three afternoons in a week for which she is taken by an extra vehicle.

• The Home acquired a reverse osmosis water filter which provides safe drinking water that also tastes good.

• The house mother’s office was shifted to the next building so that the babies and small children could have more room.

• The store room which was next to the volunteers’ room was cleared and made available for the Educator to organise play therapy.

• A seven-seater van was purchased for the transport of the small children.

3 Health Care

Sumathi was admitted in Manipal Hospital and was diagnosed with thrombosis in the brain. This diagnosis could not be confirmed by doctors at St. John’s Hospital nor in Germany. Meanwhile the treatment was stopped and the pain disappeared.

Geetha continued her dialysis at Manipal Hospital 3 times a week. This is her 12th year of dialysis, and all expenses are borne by Shishu Mandir.

Dr. Malathi, a pediatrician from HAL, visited the Home for some time to provide free medical treatment to the babies.

Manipal Hospital provides free out-patient treatment to our children, but the charges are exorbitant, whenever a child requires admission.

Many children were advised to have spectacles which they received from Sai Eye Clinic at Ramamurthinagar at a reasonable price.

4 Holistic Development

Play Therapy

Mitu, our professional counselor used this technique for children from 4-10 years in age. In this manner, Mitu attempted to dissolve their feelings of insecurity.

Group Sessions

Mitu also organized several group sessions with the children of 11 years and above. They discussed topics like problem solving, time management, study techniques etc.

New Students’ Assessment

According to the Home Rules it is obligatory to carry out an assessment for all new children after six months of stay in the Home. Suganya, Meena and Sumathi were assessed and it was found that Meena and Sumathi need to improve and will be re-assessed after six more months.

Swimming

Out of 23 children who were taught swimming, 15 have learnt swimming very well, 5 with slight support and 3 not at all.

Yoga

During the summer vacation, the children had two weeks of yoga training. Children above the age of ten also took part in the meditation programme for a month.

Village and Tribal Life Experience

The children spent three days at Ganjigunte, a tribal village in Kolar, and learnt about the life style and occupation of the tribals. They experienced life in a small village where there was no electricity, water supply, or roads. They mingled with the village children and also organized a small cultural programme.

Social Rounds in the Evening

Every evening after the dinner the children gathered together for 45 minutes to play and have a time of interacting with each other. They engaged in activities like chess, carom, puzzles and singing.

5 Cultural and Religious Celebrations

Keeping in pace with the traditions of the country the children celebrate various religious and cultural events such as Sankranti, Ugadi, Ayudha Puja, Diwali, and of course, Christmas. They prepare sweets for each occasion and sing bhajans and hymns. For Christmas, all staff and past and present children received presents and enjoyed the company of Mama.

6 Special Entertaining Programmes

Weekend Recreation

On weekends our volunteers took the children to parks or the Corporation Ground to play cricket. Other activities included window shopping, and going to temples and churches. Night Camps in the School

Two night camps were organized by the volunteers in the school campus. Such camps are designed to help the children develop better interpersonal relationship skills.

7 Success and Failures

• One of our biggest achievements of the year was to find good adoptive parents for 9-year-old Stella and 7-year-old Naresh. Stella went to Spain, while Naresh went to Indian parents in America.

• Navya has shown remarkable improvement in controlling her tantrums and other behavioural issues. At the age of 11, she is now able to perform small tasks in the Home.

• Guru has completed a three-year diploma course in Fashion Designing.

• Under the guidance of Pratik, the children organised the stall at the Christmas Charity Bazaar in Lingarajapuram entirely on their own.

• The in-country and inter-country adoption licenses were renewed for 2 and 3 years respectively.

• The 80G grant of the ITI department, by which donors can avail of a tax deduction, was renewed permanently.

• This was the first year in which all the parents paid their children’s savings without fail, in fact, one or two of them were even on time.

• We received eight new children for adoption, four of them came from the government home and the others came through our contacts in the surrounding slums and villages.

• Sharmila’s failure to pass in the 10th std, though expected, has made us to rejudge our preparation of the weak students in a deeper way.

8 Adoption

New children

Of the 8 children brought into the home for adoption, 6 were boys and 2 were girls. Most of the children have been adopted or placed in foster care. Legal Process

This year 14 adoptions were finalised which is the highest number in the history of Shishu Mandir. Five children were placed for inter-country and nine for in-country adoption. The legal procedure requires that two representatives of the organisation be present in the court. Mr. Venu, our Joint Secretary, and Raghu, our social worker, assumed this duty for all cases. Adoption related Works

a. Support to pregnant Women Lakshmi, a 15-year-old girl, gave birth to a still-born child. After the delivery she was guided to a convent in Malur to receive skill-training. She still continues to stay and learn there.

Mary, another 15-year-old pregnant girl, was also sent to the Malur Convent, since her family wanted her to hand over the child for adoption. As she could not adjust to the rules of that home, she left the place and could not be traced any more.

Another lady was brought from the Malur Convent to Bangalore for delivery under our care. She left our place before the delivery without information.

b. Meetings related to Adoption

Mr. Anand attended all ACA meetings where issues of adoption were being discussed by the adoption agencies of Bangalore.

Jisha represented Shishu Mandir for the meeting organized by CARA at Bangalore. Jisha also attended several meetings organized by CWC to discuss issues concerning adoption and children under Care and Protection. As a senior social worker in the adoption field, CWC requested her to teach the adoption procedures and guidelines to newly approved adoption agencies.

9 New Policies

The Executive Committee decided to restrict the Home admission for Care and Protection to twice a year i.e. June/July and Dec/Jan. In case of an emergency situation the Home Admission Committee, however, can admit a child after the approval of the EC.

In 2007 the government brought out a new rule under the name Juvenile Justice Rules (Care and Protection) 2007 which is based on the Juvenile Justice Act 2000. Chapter 29 says

d) Children of both sexes below 10 years may be kept in the same home, but separate facilities shall be maintained for boys and girls in the age group of 5 to 10 years.

e and f) Separate children’s homes shall be set up for boys and girls in the age group of 10 to 18 years and these children would be further segregated into two groups of 10-15 and 15-18.

Although these rules are in utter contrast with the vision of our Home, it seems like we may eventually have to comply with these rules.

10 New Home

Our Home at Ulsoor has limited space for outdoor activities and is far away from the school. Therefore, Shishu Mandir bought a piece of land about 1.5 km from the school for Rs. 80 lakhs. The land measures 36 guntas or 39,204 sq.ft. or 3.747 m².

The School A Staff I Staff Details

In the academic year 2009 -10, we recruited nine new staff members. Six of the old teachers left us for various reasons. Altogether we had 20 teachers and 1 trainee teacher. II Capacity Building of the Teachers

II.1 Special Training

Our Principal, some teachers and our social workers attended various training courses and workshops related to Children’s Rights and Childhood Education.

Mr. Anand visited Germany for three weeks. During this visit, he gave presentations, visited schools, vocational training centres, our former volunteers, and children’s homes.

II.2 Orientation Programme

An orientation programme for the teachers was held at the beginning of the new academic year.

II.3 In-service Training

Mrs. Hella Mundhra spent ten weeks in the school when she assessed the performance of the teachers, gave demonstration classes and taught them MS Word and MS Excel.

Ms. Bettina evaluated the special teaching method in our prep classes.

II.4 Library training

Mrs. Stella Delvie underwent training in the ‘Grow by Reading’ programme at Hippocampus. Mrs. Rani Tandon, our Principal, received the ‘Best Reviewer Award’, and the librarians of the ‘Yellow Zone’, headed by Mrs. Stella won the ‘Best Networking Award’.

III Benefits

III. 1 Staff Credit Society

The Staff Credit Society, which was started in the year 2003 to help the staff to come out of their high-interest loans has succeeded in clearing loans and paying off other expenses.

Staff members have also created a Staff Welfare Fund to help each other in times of emergency.

III. 2 Salary Increments/ Extra Benefits

All staff members were given two increments. They also received Christmas gifts of Rs. 550/each. All those who have completed three years of service in Shishu Mandir received support for medical insurance. Shishu Mandir provides free van services for the teachers between their house and the school.

B Children I. Details of the Children

In the year 2009 -10, there were 164 children, out of whom 125 were girls and 39 were boys. 20 children were newly admitted to Prep A level, two others in the 6th Std. and one girl in the 7th Std.

I.1 Distribution of Boys and Girls

The boys’ ratio came down from 30% to 24% because ten boys had to leave the school for various reasons. More girls were also taken in this year because their families were more deserving of our help. I. 2 Location of our Children’s Residence

New children were selected only from the surrounding villages of the school. Out of 164 children, 34 are coming from Ulsoor and 130 from the school area.

I.3 Details of Promotions

This year nine children had to be detained in the same class. The performance in Science and Maths needs to be improved for many students.

Of the ten students who wrote the SSLC exam, one got Distinction, four others scored over 80%, two secured First Class, two secured Second Class, and one failed. I.4 Children who left While we could send 10 students to a further educational level, eight of them for PUC and two of them for job-oriented courses, we had to send three of our children to other schools. Two other children went to their native places, two were adopted, and a 9th Std. girl is yet to be traced. One boy of the 8th std left us because of personal reasons beyond our control.

II Intellectual Development of the Children

II.1 Creative Writing

Bettina encouraged the students of all the classes to write down some thoughts regardless of errors through a programme called ‘Creative Writing’. The aim is to encourage the children to deepen their thinking by expressing themselves without the fear of being corrected.

II. 2 Special Reading Classes

In this programme, the students of Prep A, B and1st std. were assisted by the teachers for 45 minutes everyday to help them to improve their reading skills.

II.3 Library

Mrs. Annie, who had been associated through Times of India’s ‘Teach India Programme’, visited the school every Saturday with her volunteers to conduct a reading programme.

This year we spent Rs. 16,000 to acquire the most-needed books. We also received books from donors in the US and Germany.

II.4 Intercultural Exchange Programme

Ms. Judith Biller, a teacher from Germany presently living in Bangalore, organised an inter-cultural exchange programme at school which allowed our students of Std. IV to VI to exchange information with the students of Parkschule in Gaildorf, Germany.

II.5 Evening Study

Everyday from 3:15 to 4:30 pm the children have the opportunity to learn their lessons at the school campus. Some teachers stay back after working hours to help out.

II.6 Night Stay for the 10 th Std. Students

The students of 10th Std. were allowed to stay in the school premises from March onwards for the final preparation of the SSLC. Dinner and supervision was provided by the school.

II.7 Change in Exam Pattern

Shishu Mandir does not believe in a rigid exam system and conducted written tests at random for the children with at least a two-day gap between two tests.

II.8 Educational Tours

Mrs. Stella Delvie and Mrs. Charusheela organised tours for all children, most of which were educational.

II.9 Competitions

Mrs. Charusheela and Mrs. Vipitha organised elocution, quiz, singing, story telling, and debate competitions for all the children. This year’s Science Day surpassed all the previous ones.

II.10 Library Day

Books were exhibited in the verandah and children got to display their reading, story-telling, and dramatic skills in front of library teachers and volunteers. II.11 Follow-up of a Special Needs Child

With Ms. Verena’s help, Lakshmi’s tantrums have been brought under control by 80%.

III Physical Development of the Children

III. 1 Indoor and outdoor Games

Several indoor and outdoor matches in various sports were organised on Saturdays.

Children from classes 2 to 6 were given training in football by a professional trainer who also certified the participation.

The children were allowed to play in the school campus till 5:30 pm everyday.

III.2 Cycling

Mrs. Ammu teaches cycling to all children in Std. V and above.

III.3 Basketball

Our children took part in three basketball tournaments organised by Mr. Mahajan at Vidyaranyapura.

During the summer, 30 children from class 5 to 9 were taken to Tumkur for five days to be trained by Mr. Mahajan.

Overnight basket ball tournaments and training sessions have been organized during the year in the school premises.

III.4 Swimming

The volunteers Ms. Verena, Ms. Aleks and Ms. Katja Ramme trained the children of class 4 to 9 in swimming mainly during the summer vacation.

IV Personality Development

IV.1 Counselling

Mr. Sunil Bhave, a professional counselor, volunteered to counsel our teachers.

Mr. Shantha Kumar, a psychotherapist, gave counselling sessions to our Std. VII to X students with a view to strengthen their self-esteem.

Two post graduate students of Montfort College visited the school twice a week for eight months and organized group sessions regularly.

IV.2 Meditation

The children were introduced to various meditation techniques to help improve their concentration.

IV.3 Music

Mrs. Anne Esselbruegge taught flute to five of our children for 6 months. Mr. Selva, a Theology student from Kristu Jyothi College, taught guitar to 10 children.

V Social Responsibilities and Awareness

Mr. Arun Patre, who had attended the international meet on Global Warming at Copenhagen, shared his information with the children and the teachers.

Mrs. Almitha Patel spoke to the teachers and the high school students on solid waste management.

The 10th std. students were taken to various NGOs, factories, the High Court, Vidhana Soudha etc. for a week as an exposure programme.

Hella and a few older children helped to weed the school garden and build a brick pathway.

The high school children also undertook a cleaning drive of the classrooms and school campus during Dussehra, Christmas, and the summer vacations.

VI Special Days of the Year

VI.1 Religious Festivals

As usual we celebrated the most important religious festivals like Diwali, Ayudha Pooja and Christmas in a traditional manner.

VI.2 Children's Day

On the 14th of November, Children’s Day was celebrated at school. It was a day of skits, competitions, and craft making.

The ANZ Company sponsored a visit to the Planetarium, and “Family Services” organised various programmes for our children.

VI.3 Teachers' Day

On Teachers’ Day, the children expressed their gratitude to the teachers by performing various cultural programmes.

VI.4 Founder’s Day

On January 11th we celebrated the birthday of our dear Mama. The day included various events like a sports meet and a cultural programme

Three families of school children received cheques of Rs. 85,000 each. The water filter programme was launched under the assistance of Mr. Ramachandre Gowda.

The first instalment of Rs. 30 lakhs was paid towards the purchase of the land for our new Home.

VI.5 Farewell

The 9th std students organised a farewell function for the outgoing 10th std students.

VII Special Benefits to the Children

VII. 1 Food

Our children from Prep A to class 5 were provided with a simple breakfast and all children with a nutritious lunch everyday except Sundays.

VII.2 Clothes, Shoes, Sweaters and School Bags

Every child received 2 sets of clothes, a sweater, a pair of shoes and a school bag at the beginning of the school year which had been sent by the German Society.

VII.3 Educational Materials

All educational materials necessary during the school year were provided free of cost.

VII.4 Health Care

Dr. Kumar from ‘Soukya’, a homoeopathic organisation, continued to offer free medical aid to our children and to the people of the surrounding villages on a weekly basis.

Dentists of M.S. Ramaiah Medical College and Hospital carried out a dental check-up for all our children and administered necessary treatment.

An eye specialist from Sri Sai Eye Hospital carried out an eye check-up for all our children. More than 10 children were provided with spectacles.

Veronica, the sister of our school child Rebecca of class 7, underwent an eye surgery costing Rs.10,000 which was sponsored by Shishu Mandir.

Children of class Prep A to Std. III and the new admissions in the higher classes were vaccinated against Tetanus and Polio by Dr. Carolin and Mama.

VII.5 Christmas Gifts

This year the children received Christmas gifts worth Rs. 550 each.

VII.6 Birthday Gifts

46 children were fortunate to receive money for their birthdays totaling Rs. 98,810.

VII.7 Savings Schemes

The savings scheme which was started in the year 2001 has resulted in total deposits of Rs. 8,18,050. This amount will be utilized for higher education and for the future life of our students.

VIII Past Students

Shishu Mandir is supporting 30 past students in their studies.

VIII.1 Former SMEC Students in other Schools

Shishu Mandir provided full support to 7 children who had been students of our school before. A more stringent policy needs to be in place to monitor them.

VIII.2 Students in Higher Education

Deepa passed her Diploma in general Nursing with a 2nd rank in her group.

Divya is a graduate in BBM now.

Sheeba completed her BCA with a First Class.

Anand Babu completed his PUC successfully with a First Class.

Benson completed his PUC with a Second Class.

While 5 girls in the 1st PUC obtained a First Class, Kalpana passed only with a Third Class.

Shiva Kumar (1st PUC), Benny (2nd yr. ITI) and Devan (1st yr. ITI) became irregular in their attendance which affected their performance noticeably.

VIII.3 Extra benefits

All past students were fully supported for their educational and supplemental expenses.

VIII. 4 Extra Pair of Shoes for the children

With the help of Mr. Flock, we bought shoes for all school children and for those who are in Higher Education at a cost of Rs. 71,815.

VIII.5 Educational Sponsorship for outside Children

For the past seven years we have been supporting 6 children who are in dire financial need. VIII.6 Higher Education Refund

The Higher Education Policy has been modified and students now have to pay 50% of their total fees before they join college or any other course beyond class 10.

VIII.7 Dropouts and Failures after Class 10

We note that 15 of our students have become dropouts, as they could not cope with their courses.

VIII.8 Involvement in the Shishu Mandir Administrat ion

VIII.8.1 As Staff Members

Geetha, Savitha, Divya, and Swami are four of our former Home children who are employed in the school and are considered the strongholds of the middle-level staff.

VIII.8.2 In Voluntary Service

Several of our old students have helped to organize various school events, tournaments and activities for children.

IX. 2 Fund Raising

The Indian Shishu Mandir Society has started involving itself in fund raising by setting up a Fund Raising Committee and registering with JustDial and CallEzee. Divya was appointed on a part-time basis for fund-raising work. Dr. Kumar of the Soukya Foundation helped us to get a sizeable contribution from MAST INDUSTRIES, USA which was used to buy 13 computers among other things useful in the school.

IX.3 Fixed Assets

Thanks to several generous donations adding up to Rs. 7,96,051, we were able to purchase some important items like a motorbike, a water filter, a sound system, a solar water heater, two computers, a laptop, many library books, an LCD projector, a mini van, and a xerox machine C Parents’ Involvement and Training

I.1 Parents’ Meetings

This year we conducted four parents’ meetings. The meetings served to hand out children’s progress reports, educate people on various aspects of family life and other societal benefits. 39 children were honoured for not taking leave during the academic year.

I.2 Parents’ Involvement

Parents were also involved in conveying our demands to the panchayat for civic amenities and this resulted in water for the school and the immediate neighbourhood.

I.3 Special Support for four Families

A few children received donations which helped their families to clear loans, start businesses, and lease homes.

The Community College I Staff

There were 5 trainers including the Principal, 1 social worker and 1 cleaning staff. Three of them had to leave due to various reasons. II Students

We started the new academic year with 50 students, out of whom 34 were girls and 16 were boys.

Nine out of 11 computer students completed the course and received their certificates, while the other two discontinued as they got employed before the end of the course.

Nine tailoring students completed the one-year course. All seven embroidery students completed the six-month course.

Six students of the nine Fitters students and five of six Electrical course students completed the course successfully.

Special Benefits

• The Executive Committee had decided to provide lunch to all the trainees free of cost from the month of July 2009.

• Eight students were given annual bus passes.

• As recommended by the EC this year, we gave fee concessions to all who were finding it difficult to pay even the nominal fees fixed for the courses.

• All students were given the required educational materials like note books, text books, hand tools, etc. free of cost.

• Each student received Christmas gifts worth Rs. 100.

• All of them got free medical support by the Homeopathic doctor Dr. Kumar of Soukya Trust who visited the centre on all Saturdays.

III Training Programmes

Mrs. Anne Esselbruegge organised “Crochet” and “Felt” training for the tailoring and computer students.

Mr. Werner organised the Solar Cooker Project for the students of the Fitters course for two weeks. He also involved the students in making wooden toys.

Mr. Nagaraj trained the Fitters students for one month on the CNC machine.

The teaching faculties of the college visited Sacred Heart Community College to know about their way of organising Community College programs.

Ms. Rekha from i2 Technology organised special classes in Oracle for the computer students for 3 months on a daily basis.

Students from Jain International Institute spent three full weeks in the Community College to impart life skills like attending interviews, presenting themselves, etc.

The computer students were also taught Commerce and Accounts which was very helpful in their job placements.

Mr. Joseph was deputed to go to Chennai to take part in the special session on Community College Schemes conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University, Delhi.

Two post graduate counseling students from Montfort College organized individual and group sessions for all the students.

IV Special Activities

Davi, an early adopted child from Shishu Mandir, and now living in Germany, took the initiative of making a kitchen garden with the support of the Fitters students. The garden produced over 45kg of vegetables and herbs.

For the first time the staff and the students of the Community College organised a special bazaar for the people around this area. This resulted in sales of Rs. 4,685.

Various competitions were organised during this year. Students showed off their skills in rangoli design, story writing, hairstyling, chaat making, etc.

V Follow-up of the Past Students

The students of the 2008 - 09 batch were invited to the college to get their feed back regarding the usefulness of our training. Trainers can modify the syllabus to suit to the market needs.

The students of the 2009 – 10 batch too could get into jobs immediately after their training because of the contact established with different firms/companies.

VI Staff and Students’ involvement in other Activit ies

Neeraja, the Principal of the Community College, continued to teach Hindi to the students of the 10th Std and Culture to the 8th and 9th Std. students of the school.

Stella, the Community College trainer, volunteered to supervise the 10th std students during their overnight stay to prepare for their final exams. She also accompanied the school students to the village camp and gave a two-week training course in basic sewing to the students of the 8th and 9th std.

Mr. Jayaprakash was always ready to take up any type of repair work for the Community College, School and Home even if it meant staying after normal work hours.

Raghu involved himself in organizing the SHGs in the villages, supervising micro-credit schemes and representing Shishu Mandir in the court for adoptions.

The students and the trainers involved themselves in decorating the hall for Kumari’s engagement. They also provided the frame for the cultural program in favour of the MAST Industry’s representatives and organised the Christmas program for the school and Community College.

The trainees involved themselves in preparing the sports ground for the sports meet. They also participated in the cleaning of the Community College on a daily basis.

VII New Acquisitions

During this year we were able to get a variety of new items. Among them were:

- 13 new computers with original software - 15 rotating chairs - 11 new tailoring machines - 1 reverse osmosis water filter - 1 table tennis table - 10 steel cupboards - Library books - Tools and equipment for the electrical and fitters sections.

VIII Government Recognition

Shishu Mandir was recognised as Vocational Training Provider (VTP) by the Directorate of Employment and Training, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Govt. of India. This recognition enables the students to get government certificates and allows the management to claim a partial refund from the Government of India for the amount spent on the training.

The Community College is also registered with ICRDCE – Chennai.

Community Welfare

I Women’s Empowerment I.1 Training Programmes

Mr. Werner Dahlmanns trained illiterate women in masonry.

We also had two orientation sessions with the single mothers of our children to motivate them to take up Skill Training. Other training sessions followed.

I.2 Life Skill Training

Sr. Josephine, a social worker and counselor, organised two training programmes for two groups of women lasting for five days each. The training consisted of

• Confidence building • Self esteem • Attitude shift • Group working • Positive thinking • Women empowerment

The women were paid Rs. 75/day as a stipend.

I.3 Training in First Aid

31 women were given one week’s training in First Aid by St. John’s Ambulance, which took place in the school campus. This is preparation for the Nurse Assistant training which has to follow in a hospital. The women received certificates of participation by the Director of St. John’s Ambulance.

I.4 House Keeping Training

10 women underwent a 5-day training in Housekeeping at Evoma Hotel. They were trained in personal etiquette and hygiene, kitchen and home management, basic cooking, etc. The charges for the training were Rs. 18,000. Trainees received a stipend of Rs. 75 per day. Subsequently they were placed into jobs with the all-out efforts of Mr. Rajkumar, our fourth social worker. I.5 Nurse Assistant Training

The first batch of 14 women trained in HAL Hospital as ‘Nurse Assistant’ for a period of 2 months. They received two sets of uniforms free of cost, free transportation, and were paid Rs. 3,000 as a monthly stipend. The second batch of women has started the training from the month of May.

I.6 Car Driving

Gowramma, a widow of 23 years and mother of 2 girl children, was supported to learn car driving and to obtain a license. She passed the driving test in the first attempt.

II Financial Support Schemes II.1 House Constructions

This year also we helped three families to construct their own house. Each house was built on a donation of Rs. 66,000.

K.R. Priya’s family was helped with Rs. 40,000 to repair their house and to construct another room.

II.2 Self Help Groups

So far 200 women, belonging to 10 different Self Help Groups, benefited from this scheme. They meet once a week in their village to pool their savings and to give loans to the most needy among themselves. Our social workers supervise this scheme.

With a special arrangement in the Syndicate Bank, more than 50 women were helped to open individual savings bank accounts with just Rs 100. II.3 Debt Relief Schemes

Seeing the success of the SHGs and the Parents’ Credit Society, Mr. Werner Dahlmanns invested Rs. 5 lakhs to help women, especially single mothers overcome their financial problems. Mr. Raghu and Mr. Praveen were given the responsibility to choose the beneficiaries and to monitor the transactions.

II.4 Parents’ Credit Society

In 2009 -10, Rs 2 lakhs were added to this scheme, which benefited 36 families. The focus of this scheme is slowly being shifted from debt relief to education, housing and medical. No debt relief will be given for excess expense on marriages. Mr. Praveen is engaged in making this scheme a success. III Miscellaneous Support Schemes

III.1 Bio-Sand Water Filter Scheme

Shishu Mandir, in collaboration with South Asian Pure Water Initiative Hamden, USA, ventured into distributing and monitoring 90 bio-sand water filters to the people of Kithiganur Colony and Janatha Colony. Shishu Mandir contributed Rs. 200 per water filter, the beneficiaries had to pay Rs.70, and the rest, Rs. 2,000, were shouldered by the American firm.

Gowramma, the widow who learnt car driving, went cycling from house to house to promote the filters and point out the improvement in their health. She was paid Rs. 3,000 per month for her work.

III.2 Solar Lights

Shishu Mandir entered into an agreement with Selko Company to identify, distribute and monitor battery-fitted solar lights which are charged through solar panels. 45 families received these solar lights worth Rs. 6000/each. Shishu Mandir agreed to give feedback to the company on a weekly basis for a period of 3 months. Suitable candidates were ones without electricity or road-side businesses. This scheme resulted in savings, more profit, and ensured more study time for children.

III.3 Prevention of School Dropouts

The Bhattarahalli and Deenabandunagar slums were chosen for organising evening study programmes to ensure that the children do their homework regularly.

III.4 Community Hall Services

The construction of the Community Hall at Kithiganur Colony six years ago proved to be highly beneficial towards community development. It houses a child-care centre, an evening study programme, is a meeting place for women’s groups, and a place where vaccinations are administered twice a year.

The Child Care Centre is run by Anugraha Trust of which 5 staff members are paid by Shishu Mandir with a donation of Rs. 12,500 per month.

The Evening Study Programme is carried out by Kristu Jyothi College.

There are numerous annexures to support and explain the facts mentioned in this report. Conclusion

The past year fills us with joy and thankfulness that we could serve a great number of people with our direct financial help, not to speak of the other guidance which they received. 762 people benefitted directly from our support, out of whom it was 444 children and 218 families with different programmes. In the school we continued to learn the art of making the children excel in their final exam by securing 7 First Classes with even 5 students above 80% and one distinction. Above that six students finished their ongoing studies, two their PUC, two their degree and two their 3-years diploma, and again 5 bagged a First Class and one a Second Class. The Home saw the highest number of adoptions this year, and even a 10-year-old girl and a 6-year-old boy could find their families. The Community College also made some initial steps towards success by imparting knowledge to otherwise family-confined women and by being able to place the majority of the students into jobs with a higher salary than ever obtainable till then. The debt relief scheme and the women’s training were another highlight of this year by which oppressing debts to the tune of Rs. 12,08,900 have been relieved for a total of 178 families. As for the Women’s Training a big leap forward was achieved this year by providing training programmes in Life Skills and three job-oriented trainings, namely house keeping, first aid and nurse assistant training. Yet two other essential services were introduced by providing the villagers with bio sand water filters and solar lamps. It is heartening to know that our staff strength has risen to 65 members this year, the major portion was added to the school. The enormous achievements of this year were of course only possible with the constant support of the donors, the German and Indian Societies, the EC and especially the ever supportive President, the staff, the children and above all the yeoman service put in by our Director Mr. Anand, which I, the Founder, would like to acknowledge sincerely and gratefully. To all of you, who are lending your hands to build further the work of Shishu Mandir we express our heartfelt thanks combined with our big hope to get your support for many years to come.
