Section 2 - Eligibility

• Applicants must be in their graduating year of secondary school. • Nominees must have a minimum overall average of 80% in all Grade 12 credits. • Be a student graduating from high school living on a working farm in Northwestern

Ontario or a student who was raised on a farm and is in a graduate program.

• First priority will be given to a student(s) who are going into the field of Nursing. If there are two students who apply in one year and meet the above requirements, then potentially more than one award will be given at an amount determined by Meredith Nelson or Deborah Kraft or their designees.

• Priority two - if there are no students going into Nursing then a Scholarship will be given to a student majoring in other health care either in an undergraduate or graduate program. **Note if the Scholarship recipient is going into a Graduate Program or continuing in a Graduate Program at a Canadian University they will provide marks based on the Graduate Program they have been admitted to or are attending. 80% will not be the baseline. They will also not be expected to live on a working farm while they are attending University.

• Priority three - if none of the above requirements are met the Scholarship will be open to any student meeting criteria 1 through 4 and entering into any undergraduate program in a University in Canada.

Section 3 – Essay Details Please answer the following:

Describe the size of the farm, where its income is derived, the number of animals, main crops and what the applicant did to help on the farm.

Section 6 – Selection Process The Community Foundation evaluates applicants in the following four areas.

Canadian post-secondary institute (as per the eligibility criteria) their Social Insurance Number and proof of aboriginal ancestry (if required). The award is paid in one installment in December of 2018.

• Winners must enter university/college in the year of their application. • Successful applicants must provide a photo for publication on the Community

Foundation’s website and a brief summary of his or her academic plans.

About the Scholarship Aileen Lahti passed away in 2008 at the age of 97. She was employed by Prudential Insurance Co. of American until her retirement after 38 years of service. Her sister Gertrude Lahti passed away in 2011 at the age of 97. She worked for 31 years for the Grain Commission. The sisters lived all of their life in Thunder Bay.

About the Scholarship Miss Helen Lilodah Dewar was born in Calcutta, India. Her family moved to Canada when she was eight years old and in 1920, the family moved to Fort William. Helen was a music supervisor and teacher with the Port Arthur Public School Board for many years. She died in December 1989 and the Thunder Bay Community Foundation became one of the main beneficiaries of her estate. In recognition of her substantial contributions the Thunder Bay Community Foundation established the Helen L. Dewar Scholarship in 1991.

About the Scholarship In 2001, the Thunder Bay Community Foundation received a bequest from Ms. Jean Elizabeth McLean to create a scholarship in memory of her late husband. Mr. John McLean was a public school educator in the City of Fort William for 32 years, from 1936 to 1956. Mr. McLean eventually served as the principal of Franklin Street Public School.

About the Scholarship Mrs. Edith Dyke was a graduate of Victoria College, University of Toronto and was one of the first women to practice law in the District of Thunder Bay. Her legal practice was eventually purchased by the firm Weiler, Maloney, Nelson. On November 20th, 1980 Mrs. Edith Dyke passed away at the age of 84. Through her estate she established a scholarship in honour of her father, the late Rev. Joshua Dyke. In 1890 Rev. Dyke founded the Wesley Methodist Church (now Wesley United Church), and in 1902 he also served as the Mayor of the City of Fort William.

About the Scholarship Ross A. Wilson graduated in 1949 from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. He worked for several forestry companies before joining the Science faculty of Hammarskjold High School in 1964. He became the Vice-Principal and continued to teach until his early retirement in 1984. Mr. Wilson enjoyed his teaching career at Hammarskjold and wished to give something back to the school that provided him with so much. In 2003, he created a scholarship endowment fund. The first scholarship was awarded in 2005.

• Only successful applicants will receive notice from the Foundation.

• All decisions are at the sole discretion of the Board of Trustees and are final.

Section 7 – Obligations of Recipients • Before payment the applicant must submit proof of full-time registration at a

Canadian post-secondary institute (as per the eligibility criteria) their Social Insurance Number and proof of aboriginal ancestry (if required). The award is paid in one installment in December of 2018.

• Winners must enter university/college in the year of their application. • Successful applicants must provide a photo for publication on the Community

Foundation’s website and a brief summary of his or her academic plans.
