Rural Water Supply Considerations:

1. A strategic consideration of the Incident Commander or unit officer of the 1st arriving engine should be whether to use tanker shuttle or long water supply relay system. If a hydrant or static water source is available within a mile of the incident, there would be sufficient LDH available amongst the 1st alarm apparatus to complete a relay from the water source to the incident. Although time consuming, such a relay would produce a more consistent non-interrupted water supply. For heavy duty operations (greater than 1000 GPM flow), distance between engines should be limited to 1000 feet.

2. A water supply officer should be appointed early into an incident. An assessment of the needed water flowshould be done and the request for additional resources made. (i.e. Additional Tankers, Engines)Doing so will ensure a continuous non-interrupted water supply.

3. Dry Hydrants can be found throughout our area. These hydrants may be utilized by connecting a hard sleeve to them and drafting.

4. A strategic consideration of the Incident Commander should be the option, of bringing the 1st arriving tanker back a lane to support the initial attack. This decision should be based upon anticipated fire flow and fire conditions present. For Example, it would not be beneficial to commit a tanker back the lane at a well-involved barn fire, however it may be beneficial at a residential fire with little fire conditions present.
