Happy New Year ’81! Hope everyone had agreat holiday. I am still reveling in memoriesfrom our 30 year reunion. And what areunion it was! Three days of nonstop fun, starting with a well attended golf tourna-ment, and followed by a great crab feast, amoving memorial service, our Class meet-ing, a superb Class dinner reception, and anawesome tailgate party. For icing on thecake, we beat Troy. Everything about theweekend was great.

Before we get into Class news, we owea huge thank you to our reunion coordina-tor, Nelson Moe (24). I am sure everyonewill agree that Nelson did a superb job. Notonly did he do most of the heavy lifting, hehas served as our Class VP for the past 10years. Thank you Nelson for all you havedone for our Class.

I am sorry to report that we recentlylost another Classmate. Joe Quinn (1)passed away on December 1. His firstcompany roommate, Bob Schulze, wrotethe following about Joe:

■“I will always remember Joe as loyal andtrue friend. Honest and direct, we alwaysknew where he stood on any topic (orperson, for that matter). Joe was slow toanger but always quick to forgive andforget. He was athletic and modest, able tofind humor in everything and alwaysenjoyed a good joke. I never had a chanceto see Joe after graduation except for onebrief visit in Florida many years ago. Heand I always enjoyed reminiscing about ourdays in Annapolis. So I will remember himas he was: Joseph Thomas Francis Quinn,Upper Darby PA, First Company, plebesummer squad mate, plebe year roommate, intramural sports teammate, ’81 Classmateand friend”. ■

On behalf of the Class I would like toexpress my deepest sympathies to Joe’s family.

Our outgoing Prez, Jim Ahlgrimm(34), sent in a recap of the 2011 annualAdmiral William P. Lawrence Ethics Essay

81 Award Dinner at Alumni Hall on 1 September 2011.

■“The event was hosted by Art Athens’78, Director of the Stockdale Center atUSNA. Superintendent VADM Millerprovided opening remarks and the guestspeaker was LtGen John Wissler ‘78. Therewere approximately 40 midshipmen inattendance, all of whom were selected fortheir outstanding analysis of an ethics issue.

During the dinner, on behalf of theClass of ‘81, Steve Metz (4) presented aframed print and ship coins from theLAWRENCE (DDG-4) commissioningceremony, which he had attended. Thepicture will be displayed at the StockdaleCenter. Mrs. Lawrence was on hand for thedinner. All of us had a chance to talk withher, and she is still as lovely and elegant aswe all remember her as midshipmen.

In the picture, left to right are JuniorOrtiz, Mark Hyman, Mary Gunther, JimAhlgrimm, Steve Metz, Ric Van Antwerp,Mike Carucci, Paul Jaeger, Steve Moran,Mrs. Lawrence, Ava Howard, and Paul Imps”.■

Jim thanks for the recap. A very worthyprogram for the Class to be a part of.

Keith Mahosky (6) wrote to let usknow of his retirement from the NavyReserve. Besides sending me the obligatoryClassmate photo from his retirement, hewas kind enough to send me updates oneveryone in attendance. His report:

■“I retired after a 30 year career, 6 Active,24 Reserve. The last decade was spent in avariety of command billets, primarily in thesubmarine training and waterfront supportcommunity. I was joined by fellow 6thcompany survivors Tom Hartline,Rowley Molina, Cory Frank, TimGarrold,Tim’s wife Vicki (Defiore-35thCo.), and John Judge, 6th company ’82.

2 masters’ degrees in education at Rutgers.Ben, 22, is publishing his first novel withThree Rivers Publishing (a Division ofRandom House). Mariah, 18, is beginningcollege at IUP for English and Film, whileTess, 14, is in 8th grade.

I just left ENERCON Services after12+ years as a senior manager where I wasleading business development and projectmanagement for facility decommissioning, engineering and environmental cleanupprograms for both commercial and govern-ment clients. I am just now starting in myrole as Vice President of JGMS, an engi-neering and environmental company thatsupports clients with engineering and envi-ronmental professionals for projects in boththe commercial and government sectors.

Tom Hartline: Since leaving active dutyas a helicopter pilot after over 10 years, Ihave worked for NASA. I spent 14 yearssupporting the Space Shuttle at MarshallSpace Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. In2007, I was selected for the SeniorExecutive Service and moved to GlennResearch Center in Cleveland, OH as theSafety and Mission Assurance Director. In2009, I retired from the Navy Reserve withmost of my reserve time as a Scientific andTechnical Intelligence Officer. I continue tobe active with the Naval Academy as theBlue & Gold Area Coordinator forNortheast Ohio. My wife Mary and I arecoming up on 28 years of marriage and wehave four children, Elizabeth 24 who grad-uated from Auburn University as a WildlifeScience major last year, and 15 year oldtriplets, Victoria, Abigail and Thomas whoare in 10th grade.

Tim Garrold: I retired in 2006 after 32years in uniform. I didn’t want to, but it wastime. It was a good ride while it lasted and inmy current position at the Naval WarCollege, I’m still contributing to the fight. 30 years in May. Our oldest, Chessa, graduated from USNA in 2009 (as we liketo say, the square root of 81 is 9), ourmiddle child, Brianna, graduated from TheCollege of Notre Dame of Maryland in2010 and is currently completing an MA atGeorge Washington University in DC, andour youngest, Scott, is a Junior at theUniversity of Rhode Island. I’m about halfway through an Ed.D. in EducationalLeadership, working full time and going toschool full time. It’s keeping me young. Itkeeps me tired. My lifetime record of zeroall-nighters, however, remains intact.

Cory Frank: My wife Odette and Ihave been married for 25 years and livehere in sunny San Diego with our twogrown sons Brian and Jeremy, and nieceBeverly (thankful to say that all are happyand working!). I left active duty after 10years in Cryptology and retired from thereserves in 2003. Most of my combinedmilitary and civilian career has been in thedevelopment and life cycle support of vari-ous government information systems. Fouryears ago it became time for somethingdifferent and I joined international businessas a senior database engineer for Yahoo, Inc.We are really enjoying life in “SoCal”,along with occasional trips to visit family inthe Philippines.

Rowley Molina: Ten years of activeduty as a Surface Warfare Officer took meto duty stations in Yokosuka, Japan,Mayport, FL, Norfolk, VA, and USNA.Three years in the Reserves were spent in aMobile Inshore Undersea Warfare (MIUW)unit in Little Creek before I weighedanchor and set sail for the corporate world.

My corporate career has primarily beenin the Baltimore, MD area and focused onIT and Information Security leadershiproles. Life has been full of challenges andopportunities in various industries rangingfrom financial to healthcare to governmentcontracting. Today’s opportunity is on theMD Eastern Shore in the corporate officesof Perdue where it still “takes a tough manto make a tender chicken.”

After commissioning and while attending SWOS and MPA School inNewport, RI I met the love of my lifeChristine. We will be married thirty years inMarch and have been blessed with daugh-ters Jess (born in Yokosuka, Japan) and Rae(born in Annapolis). Living near RehobothBeach, DE lets us enjoy the beach life whilebeing close enough to Annapolis for NavyFootball and other events in the Yard. ■

Keith, thank you for getting such greatupdates, and congratulations.

Tom Hoffman (27) is our newestClassmate living here in the aloha state. Heused the occasion for his first ever submis-sion to Shipmate.

■“I was holding off on writing toShipmate until I accomplished somethingof note. Well, I finally did. Lotta and I weremarried in Cocoa Beach, FL, on 4 July2011. My son, Nick, is a Sophomore at theUniversity of Florida and is in the NavyROTC program. He seems to be having alot more fun in college than I did 30 years ago.

I retired from the Air Force in 2009 as aflight surgeon. I worked as a contract flightsurgeon for NASA for a couple years afterthat. I ran into Kay Hire (16), Brent Jett(25), and Wendy Lawrence (13) duringthat time. While active duty I traveled toRota, Spain a few times and was hosted bythe base commander, Earl Hampton. Afew years ago my company mate TimJarman and his lovely wife, Lois, visited mein Cocoa Beach. Lois is about to “pin on”her PhD. I’m still running and keep intouch with fellow runner, Kevin McCarthy ‘83.

Lotta and I moved here to Hawaii acouple months ago. I work as a contractflight surgeon at Hickam AFB. We’rehoping to stay in Hawaii for a while. ■

Good Morning, ’82!Here is your ray of sunshine in the

otherwise doldrums of the “Dark Ages”.You certainly remember this time of year:football season was long over, Christmasvacation was in the rear view mirror, and“Cold, Dark and Dreary” were in the Planof the Day until Spring Break. Fieldballwas played on a frozen Hospital Point field, visible breath was your constant compan-ion during your perimeter run, and hotchocolate with honey dipped donuts madegetting up for breakfast worthwhile. Keith Boring (25) reports on thehonoring of the 1981 Liberty Bowl team:

■ “The fun did not end there! We wereinvited to the Formal P-Rade as guests ofthe Supe. I did get a photo of me andJordy there just to prove we could find it!A reception at the Supe’s house ended theafternoon in the yard.

“Friday night found us at NavyMarine Corps Memorial Stadium’sBanquet room. We had a great dinner andthe bar was open. The 1981 FootballHighlights reel was playing on the TVs,and Tim Jordan showcased a veritabletreasure trove of memorabilia, includingthe packaging from the panty hose

(yes, you read correctly) that they gave usto try and keep warm during the game.

“Some of us slipped away from thedinner and got a tour of the stadiumlocker room facilities. It’s much biggerthan the dungeon under the Southwestcorner of the stadium that we used but itsmells worse than I recalled. Stale sweat isnever really appealing.”

“All in all it was a very wonderfulweekend. We reconnected with some guysnot seen in, well 30 years.” ■

This particular picture is at the “LordNelson”, one of the three oldest pubs inSydney, and we are pictured with the manhimself. I think at the time I was enjoyinga Trafalgar Ale and Ocho was having aNelson’s Blood, a very stout porter withalmost-eat-it-with-a-spoon thickness. Iguess for somebody who got a D inhistory this gave me a better appreciationfor naval history.” ■

Happy New Year ’83. What is your NewYear’s resolution for 2012 ? Lose weight –naaah, that’s an ever-ongoing battle, not aresolution. Be kinder to your spouse, kids, neighbor’s dog – naaah, that’s somethingyou should do every day anyway. Makeyour 2012 resolution to contact an oldfriend from elementary school, highschool, or college – yes, track down thatlong lost companymate that you haven’theard from in the nearly 29 years sincegraduation – yes, the one that you arewondering just where he or she ended up

in life. Maybe it’s even someone a littlefurther back – that roommate who startedwith us all, but left for whatever reason –track them down and reconnect.LinkedIn, Facebook, Google search – trustme, you can find almost anyone. Andwhen you do reconnect, it will meansomething to you both.

The electronic mailbag was full – butI can always use more. Many have kidsgraduating from college, getting married, having your grandchildren – yes, continu-ing your legacy. So brag a little bit and tellall of us part of your life story. Send meyour updates.

On to the Newz!CJ Loria coordinated a 17th

company shindig at the SouthernMississippi game in early October. Amongthose in attendance were Brent“Grillmaster” Flaskerud who smoked apig for the Tailgater; Ann and MarkHagerott and his kids (but they aren’tkids any more Mark, and neither are you);Keith Menz; Sean O’Connor, CJ, hislovely wife Jamie and son Nate; and yourscribe and spouse Claudia. Besides thepig, Brent also hosted the gater at hisAdmiral’s row parking spot, completewith tie died pirate flag.

One can only hope that as this articlegoes to print Navy football has continuedtheir dominance over Army (I have my9th annual wager with an ’84 woop – I’venever met him, but I never get tired oftaking his stuff).

Keith Menz provided a short updatebut PROMISED a more complete updatein the near future: I have one married andtwo in college and one in high school.Tracy & I are ‘empty nesters’ except forour dog.

Two reach outs looks for classmates inthe past month – a class of ’84 alum look-ing for Tomoko Ishikawa Tanaka, and aspouse of a classmate looking for VicMercado. For info, if someone asks me foryour email/other contact info, I do not passit on, but I will pass on their info to you, soyou have the option on whether or notyou want to contact them.

Steve Fischer ([email protected]) continues in his attemptsto corral classmates in the DC/NorthernVirginia area for a monthly luncheon. Thismonth, he took to the Facebook pages andtracked down a lot more classmates toinvite – I’ve tagged all in the “you owe mean update category” below.

The next luncheon is in Decemberand maybe there will be quite a few thereto provide some future Newz updates.

Mark Hagerott was recently at a conferenceon robotic warfare with Steve Trainor andI quote “makes my head spin on the worldthat is emerging in our lifetime!”

Whenever 2 or 3 gather... Rich Woodford writes in:

■ I was fortunate to catch a few minuteswith CEO Dave “Doc” Saba in Dallas,Texas while I was in town to train somefederal auditors. We caught the openingpitch of Game 5 of the World Series. Itwas great to get caught up and reminisceabout our classmates and those crazy daysspent in The Yard. Dave is CEO for LTFTraining, a non-profit providing qualityteaching training. He’s doing well andlooking forward to the 30th reunion. ■

John “Woody” Wood checks in from Singapore:

Joe Harding sends in this update:

■ Good Morning Navy (er Chris),Thanks for putting together all the

Shipmate inputs. A thankless task butthanks anyway. I think this is my secondupdate in 28 years but it will be brief. TheNavy Reserve has kicked me to thebench (VTU) long ago but there is stillsomething about putting on that uniform.

Alice (my wife of almost 23 years) andI visited USNA this fall during 2/CParents Weekend. We sat in on our daugh-ter Christy’s classes (Christy Harding’13), ate in King Hall (photo attached),briefly toured 17th Company spaces, watched the parade, and attended theGospel Choir and the Men’s and Women’sGlee Club concert that evening. That wasonly the first day. Saturday was also a fullday including a lengthy Mid Store run inthe morning, the football game, and evena late, late dinner in D.C.

I would have to give a big thumbs upfor the football stadium upgrades andimprovements to the academic buildings(Sampson, Michelson, Chauvenet, Luce inparticular) and King Hall. I know I amnot the first to report this but the MidStore is huge and novices should notenter without GPS technology.

I have been teaching high school (mostrecently Geometry and AP Statistics) andcoaching tennis in Visalia, California for20+ years since I left active duty. Alice and Iare dealing with “empty nest” syndromesince our youngest baby bird, Hannah, recently flew south to San Diego to pursuecollege and much nicer weather.

That is all. Carry on, Joe ■

What a fun, football fall I have enjoyedthis year! This is my first “soccer-free” fallin seven years so I have been takingadvantage of my extra time and was ableto attend two Navy games this year (andmore importantly, get to the NavalAcademy Store aka the Mid Store).

I was able to attend the Scout Dayfootball game against Troy University. Beinga guest of Mary Beth Chipkevich,

84

we had an unbelievable tailgate location.Only problem is that it is on the oppositeside of the ’84 tailgater. However, I wasable to visit both of them. I was able tosee our class at the tent. Thanks so muchto Michelle and Warren Mazanec fordoing so much to put on a nice tailgate. I took an iPhone picture of some of theattendees when I stopped by.

Pictured are Harry Ward, Friend ofHarry, El Presidente Warren Mazanec,Anna Yurina (Friend of Jim Wilhelm),Jim Wilhelm, Andy Hale, MichelleMazanec, Logan Mazanec and MaryBeth Chipkevich.

On the other side of the stadium, I raninto Linda Schumacher Eriksen and apicture was snapped.

“Ladies of ’84 !”

Pictured are Mary Beth Chipkevich,Dianne Hardin Archer, ToniKasprzak Chase and LindaSchumacher Eriksen.

Back on the visitor’s parking lot, I literally ran in to Scout Leader and classmate Andrew Gallotta.

“Scout Day at USNA !”

Andrew Gallotta was kind enough tofollow up with me with some written

input so that I did not have to documenteverything on the spot and was able toenjoy his company! He writes:

■Tim and Caroline are 9 and 7, respectively.Mommy (Elizabeth) is from upstate NY andcontinues to marvel at the DC traffic, thoughafter 8 years down here, she’s pretty muchbroken the code, i.e., DOUBLE what youexpect to be the travel time! She works fromhome AND homeschools Caroline, who isin the 2nd grade. Tim’s 4th grade experiencehas just begun and he’s enjoying his activitiesboth in Scouting and the school’s ChessClub. I am in OPNAV, where I support N46and the Shore Readiness folks. Working withCEC officers has been an eye opener; I alsoroutinely work with Fleet Readiness andLogistics staffs, not to mention the occasionalBRAC (Base Realignment and ClosureCommission) or environmental issue.

As far as the game goes, it was niceseeing the march-on and seeing the midstake a game handily. The Scouts that Ibrought to the game uniformly had anexcellent time, so I hope we can do thisagain next year. Turns out WarrenMazanec and his family were sitting acouple rows behind us and he said hi andtold us where the ’84 tent was. Took alittle hunting, but we eventually found itand frankly, it was certainly well worth thesearch! We headed out to the ‘84 tent athalftime and enjoyed chatting with a fewother classmates, including Steve Lott,Bill Castenada, and Sharon Pfeiffer. We spent the end of the game talkingwith Todd Lutton and his wife Patty. They go to all the games and it was funseeing them also - Todd and I wereroomies in Orlando. Their son (Nick) is asecond classman and is apparently in Masqueraders. ■

Next up is Rocky Goins, who was kindenough to provide me with an updatewhen I was Facebook trolling.

■ Rocky, Susan, Tori (18) and Kasey (16)moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma where Rockyis the Vice President of Development/Acquisitions for Senior Star. Daughter,Tori, is with the Navy ROTC at Cornell

Tori is the FOURTH GENERA-TION of Goins to serve in the Navy!Rocky’s wife, Susan, was also a NavyCryptology officer from Florida StateUniversity when he met her in SanDiego. The class of ’84 is everywhere inTulsa, as George Carradini and KaseyCregge Carradini are leaders in theTulsa Alumni Chapter! While attending aWashington, D.C. Senior Care conferencein September, Rocky had dinner withMiles Baker, who is currently on anAlaskan Senator’s staff. (Note from Toni:The press release on Miles’ appointment islater in this article. Congratulations,Miles!) Rocky is excited about theupcoming Army Navy Game and will beattending with his people of the 29thCompany, Mark Stys, Mike (Max)McGee and George Zamka and theirbetter halves. Tim and John wrote to send news of arecent development with Navy-wideimpact led by our class’s own RDMLChuck Rainey. Space and Naval WarfareSystems Command’s Fleet ReadinessDirectorate is a new organization chargedwith improving SPAWAR’s C4I equipmentinstallation and maintenance performance.Chuck leads the new organization asSPAWAR’s first-ever Deputy Commanderfor Fleet Readiness. The new Fleet

Readiness Directorate is such a big deal thatthe commanders of the Pacific Fleet andFleet Forces Command - two four-starAdmirals - released a message to their fleetsannouncing its standup.

John Funk is the Executive Assistant toRADM Patrick Brady ‘81, CommanderSpace and Naval Warfare SystemsCommand. John recently completed asuccessful command tour in USSBonhomme Richard. Tim Pence arrived atSPAWAR this past summer after complet-ing a tour at U.S. Naval Forces Japan. Hereat SPAWAR, he serves on the staff ofRDML Jim Rodman, SPAWAR’s Chief Engineer.

The final input for this issue is from theAlumni News on usna.com and highlightsthe accomplishments of Miles Baker.Senator Lisa Murkowski has hired threenew staff members to help her shapeupcoming work with an Alaska-centricvision: a Legislative Director and twoLegislative Assistants. These new staffersbring years of expertise to the table and Iwelcome their contributions on behalf of Alaska.

Miles Baker joins the Murkowskiteam as a Legislative Assistant in the field offinance and budgeting after several years inthe Alaska State Legislature. Baker wassenior staffer for Senator Bert Stedman (R-Sitka) in Juneau, where he worked onstate finance and appropriations policy forthe Senate Finance Committee. ■ Difficult to use the leadership structurethat was in place for only 6 months over25 years ago to influence participation inthe class Shipmate column, so I’ll just“take one for the team”...a phrase weoften used on the baseball field. Four of usmanaged to graduate as baseball playersand our paths have recently crossed. I justcompleted a tour as the Program Managerat Pax River for the Navy’s Broad AreaMaritime Surveillance (BAMS) program.Scott Wild (34) (pitcher) recently joinedthe BAMS team. Scott retired from theSupply Corps and spent a few years withindustry before returning to GovernmentService as a civilian. ■We currently are living in Memphis,TN. Jennie and the kids moved here in2004 when I received orders to thePentagon. I spent the end of 2005 andmost of 2006 in Yemen enjoying thebeautiful scenery and wonderful food(actually did put on 20 pounds).Following my year in Yemen, I headedback to the Pentagon and began workingon my retirement. I retired June of 2007and began to live full time in Memphis (Ido miss my frequent flier miles, but some-times you just have to make sacrifices). Both of my sons have moved on and nowlive in San Diego and my daughter Sarahis in her sophomore year of high school.Jennie is doing most of the traveling as aManaging Director for KPMG on theconsulting side, and I spend my daysteaching geometry and algebra II to 80girls at a private all girls school. I finishedmy Masters in Teaching this May and havebeen teaching full time for almost twoyears now. Sarah started this year atHutchison School and during the enroll-ment process the school asked if I wouldlike to teach math for them. Lost a fewdollars compared to my cushy publicschool teaching job, have 100 fewerstudents and now have a full time chauf-feur (Sarah now has her permit), but I didhave to replace a mirror a few weeksback. Ouch! ■

President’s CornerOn behalf of the entire Class, a big shoutout and BRAVO ZULU to J. Eric Smithwho went above and beyond to plan andexecute a fantastic 25th Reunion for us allthis past October. For more than 15 years,Eric has directly supported our class in avariety of volunteer positions – mostrecently as President. Eric, thank you!

It was really fantastic to see so many ofyou make the effort to attend thereunion. Those of us who were there hada terrific time. For those of you whocouldn’t make it, we hope to see you atthe 30th!

Speaking of the 30th, over the nextfive years, our Class will be raising moneyfor a specific designated gift to the NavalAcademy – a Class Project. We get to dothis again from 2021-2026 for our 40th,and then one final time from 2031-2036where we will present a final Class Projectgift at our 50th Reunion.

Thank you to all who took part in thesurvey conducted earlier this year todetermine what we most wanted tosupport as a Class. Based on your inputs,

86

the major component – 60% of our totalgift – will go to one of the Superintendent’smajor Strategic Initiatives: The StockdaleCenter for Ethical Leadership. A minorcomponent – 20% – will go to refurbishand maintain the Mexican War Monument, which you will recall sits toward the centerof the Quadrangle on Stribling Walk. Anappropriate plaque will be affixed themonument, giving us prominent “brick andmortar” recognition. Finally, another 20%will go the Naval Academy Annual Fund –the Superintendent’s #1 Strategic Initiative.

At this point in our lives, many of usare ready to give back. When you arecontacted by the Foundation to make apledge to support our Class Project, Ihope that you will find these initiativesworthy of your generous support. Thank you. ~Scott

Don’t speed in Minnesota! Word has itthere’s a new Trooper on the scene…

■ “It’s been a long year transitioning fromthe military to my new position;Minnesota State Trooper. I was pretty surewhen I came back from my Iraq deploy-ment with the MN 34th Red BullDivision that I’d be ending my militarycareer, and I retired 30 years to the dayfrom when I signed my first enlisted Navycontract. It has been about a year since theprocess of becoming a State Trooperbegan; 14 weeks of what the MN StatePatrol calls Law Enforcement TrainingOpportunity (getting us non-law enforce-ment licensed folks schooled and licensed)and then 12 weeks of Trooper Academyand 4 weeks of additional training afterthat. Nice quiet Fridaynight for 3 of us old NAPSters in localsports bar watching Sox/Cubs, trading fash-ion tips and telling lies.

Everyone else arrived on Sat AM, withenough time to barbeque and watch theBruins epically blow a 3-0 lead againstTampa Bay in the Stanley Cup race (theymade up for it…) Had great Sat night atFenway catching up, till the Sox turned into7 yr old T-ball team and blew a 3-1 lead bygiving up 8 in the 8th. (Love my classmatesbut USNA ’87 not good karma for thehome town teams) We departed Fenway(9-3 Sox loss –Stef estatic, given Chitown asof late) and spent rest of evening enjoyingthe diverse cultural and social experiencesthat Boston has to offer from 11PM to2AM. All in all, a successful reunion: no onewoke up needing a priest, to cancel a creditcard, emergency dental work or with atattoo on their face.

HAPPY! At 6’ 2” I was back down tounder 188 pounds and looking sort offrail. For the amount of PT and such thatyou do there just isn’t a way to take inenough calories. I will say this, thisAcademy was the worst modified stressenvironment that I have ever gonethrough...the 4 other military modifiedstress episodes were really quitedoable...do what they tell you to do andthe wolves focus on the lambs that canfollow instructions...this one, they reallydidn’t tell you what to do and any deci-sion you made was the wrong one. TheAcademy had it’s purpose and it’s allbehind me now!

I did get a chance not to long ago tovisit John Midea (36th Company) downat his home in Dallas and I will be takingmy son Nick with me to the Navy vsSMU football game in another fewweeks. John is doing well and leading thecourse for Enus Paints in Dallas. John,Kathy and the kids are great hosts...because I think they much prefer uscoming to TX instead of them coming toMN to deal with the TUNDRA weatherwe have! I’ll be sure to take pictures andsend them from the SMU tailgater andfootball game. John says that there arequite a few folks in the Dallas area and thetailgater will be memorable!

By the way, I have my room reservedfor next year’s reunion! My wife was veryexcited to head back out to Annapolisafter our 20 year event, you all did a greatjob and I’m sure next year will be just as memorable.

So...if you happen to be traveling theEast Metro of St. Paul, MN and see thoseemergency lights coming up behind you, hope that you see my smiling face...Idon’t have enough road time yet to be ascynical as some of my new compatriots. ~Jim Swanson (36)” ■

Happy New Year ’91!! 2011 was a verygood year on many fronts. Let’s go througha few highlights...Nuke checklist style:Deep Six Bin Laden…check. BeatArmy…check. Class of ’91 20thReunion…check mate!!

I usually like to start out each columnwith a few Bravo Zulus for our classmatesaround the globe. However, on this occa-sion, I’d like to launch a singularly majorBZ. This one goes undoubtedly andunquestionably to Evan Barnet. Over thepast year (plus), Evan worked tirelessly asReunion Committee Chairman tomanage the daunting task of organizing the20th Reunion. As Shipmate scribe, I sat inon many of the evening conference callsand was amazed at the scope of what Evanwas managing. Plus, he devoted a tremen-dous amount of personal time to the task,in the face of very challenging anddemanding work and family commit-ments. The end result: missionaccomplished...in a major way! Thereunion was a without a doubt a stunningsuccess. But don’t take it from me alone:here’s some great feedback from Stu Lockhart (Stalag 13):

■ I didn’t want too much time to passbefore expressing how appreciated yourefforts were in coordinating the superbreunion was last weekend. What a ride! Ineeded most of this week to decompressand get my voice back—I have neverspoken as much in a 48 hour period as lastweek! I am sure you all have been inun-dated this week with follow-up e-mailsfrom classmates far and wide, but I wantedto add my voice to the crowd of thosewho had an absolutely outstanding timelast weekend. My personal thanks to youand our other classmates on the reunioncommittee who made it all happen.Needless to say, I am looking forward tothe 25th reunion already! ~Stu ■

Again, BZ to Evan and the ReunionCommittee...what a great team effort!Another highlight of the weekend was theNetworking Dinner. As part of the 20threunion planning process, the reunioncommittee thought it was a good idea tolook outside of the reunion of the needs ofour classmates after 20 years. Some were

91 returning from deployment and transitioningout, some still on active duty, some recentlyretired, and others looking to make a tran-sition from one job to another. Thispresented a great opportunity to help thosein a tough economy at the senior levelslooking for civilian work.

The committee turned to DaveScheu to plan and coordinate the evening.Ironically he was in the job search himself. With months of planning, the committeewas able to get sponsorship of the event bycompanies looking to hire Academy grad-uates. Thanks to academy focusedcompanies Aflac, Amazon, CSC, Microsoft, and Walmart the cost of the event wascovered. Academy graduates and one guestwere charge a nominal fee to keep it ontheir schedule for the weekend.

With just over 80 people in attendanceincluding a one-star from USAFA ‘79, thepanel speakers were thrilled to have anopportunity to meet high-caliber Academygraduates with proven leadership experience.

After introductions by Rich Brophy, our Class President, and Evan Barnet, ourReunion Committee Chairman, DaveScheu moderated the panel discussion andQ&A, including an opportunity for class-mates to communicate job leads. Somewere even coming to start their own busi-ness. The panel provided insightful andarticulate thoughts of the job search. Thepanel consisted of alumni:

Tom Collela, USNA ‘78, ExecutiveRecruiter for Walmart

Joe Wallis, USNA ‘86, MilitaryRecruiting Manager, Microsoft

Chris Cantarella, USNA ‘89, ExecutiveRecruiter, Korn-Ferry

Phil Dana, USNA ‘98, MilitaryRecruiting Manager, Amazon

The message from the panel was clear:narrow your focus on what you really wantto do, do your homework—just like wedid for come arounds, and most importantlyreach out to classmates for ideas andencouragement. Amazon for example indi-cated that they had hired over 114Academy grads in the last 14 months. Theleadership skills that Academy grads bringto organizations are in high demand. Thegap the evening was looking to fill wasputting graduates in touch with those inneed of work. The evening carried on withopen networking and direct conversationswith the panelists, each of which reportedmaking several promising connections withour classmates.

Many thanks to those who helped usproduce the event and to everyone who

Last and certainly not least, I wanted tocommend, on behalf of all of us, BrianSpano for organizing the MemorialService. Rich Brophy opened the well-attended service with some very movingand appropriate remarks as the President ofour fine Class. Chad Jungbluth followedwith a reading. Then our classmates, PastorDavid Ochoa, Rev. Jared McCambridge, and Rev. Ramon Baez each provided withwords of faith and wisdom and movingperspectives on how we deal with loss andhow we honor our fallen Comrades.

Thank you Brian, Rich, Chad, David,Jared and Ramon for your leadership. Ican’t think of a more fitting and honorableway to celebrate, sanctify, and keep alive thememories of our 24 brothers who havegone before us.

Finally, a huge thanks to EVERYONE that came together tomake our 20th Reunion a stunningsuccess. For those of you who couldnot make it, 25 will be here beforeyou know it...pencil it in now!OBSTCR!!

I’ve received no correspondence thismonth, so below is some info I gleanedfrom our page:

NPR recently ran a story on JasonMorris and his Battalion in Afghanistan, the link is http://www.npr.org/2011/10/30/141723895/afghan-success-comes-at-high-price-for-commander I’veincluded one of their pictures and belowis a portion of the article:

■ “It was just over a year ago that Morristook nearly 1,000 Marines to a place inHelmand called Sangin. It was a haven forTaliban fighters and drug traffickers, a placewhere the British lost more than 100troops in four years. But the British failedto push out and pursue the enemy, and theTaliban continued to control much of thearea. It was Morris’ job to take it back. Atthe time, Lt. Gen. Rich Mills was thesenior Marine commander in Helmand. He says what Morris’ unit went throughwas as brutal as anything in the history ofthe Marines. ‘It stands alone in theAfghanistan situation as probably being oneof the tougher missions ever handed to aninfantry battalion,’ Mills says. ‘It’s very rare. Icertainly would compare it to some of theamphibious assaults during World War II,places like Guadalcanal,’ he adds.” ■

Please check out the rest of the article.

92 The Milwaukie Wisconsin JournalSentinel ran a story on Fred Schenk, thelink is http://www.jsonline.com/news/ozwash/cedarburg-native-testing-mili-tarys-latest-fighter-jet-132897828.html.I’ve included one of their pictures, andbelow is a portion of the article:

■ “The Marine test pilot and Cedarburgnative [LtCol Schenk] performed the firstat-sea vertical landing of the F-35B JointStrike Fighter this month, hovering nextto the USS Wasp in the Atlantic Oceanbefore setting down neatly on the deck. When the F-35 eventually replaces thejets now soaring over war zones, it will betest pilots like Schenk who played anintegral role in development of the jointstrike fighter. ‘It’s a one in a lifetimeopportunity to be involved in an aircraftthat started on a piece of paper and is nowflying and doing really well,’ said Schenk,41, a 1988 Cedarburg High School grad-uate.” “Schenk has spent many hours inthe F-35B cockpit and had test flown iton land, but the next step required takingoff and landing on a ship as well as testinghow the aircraft interacts with a ship’slanding systems, deck and hangar. The firstlanding on Oct. 3 was done during niceweather and sea conditions - not muchcrosswinds and a steady deck with lessthan 1 degree pitch and 5 degrees of roll.Over the next few weeks Schenk flew inincreasingly less favorable conditions fromthe USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship, because ultimately pilots will be taking offand landing in all kinds of weather and seas.” ■

Please check out the rest of the article!

Classmates, I am reluctant to begin thiscolumn with bad news, but it’s importantto give this the attention it deserves. Hereis an email from Herb Lacy whoinformed us about the loss of one of ourclassmates over the Thanksgiving holiday.

■ Damola Joseph “DJ” Itobi (7thcompany) lost his life in a fatal accidentthat occurred Wednesday, November 23,2011 near the Virginia-West Virginia line.He was on his way to a Thanksgivingoffice party. While he was traveling onHarper’s Ferry Road just south of Route340 around 11:15 a.m., a tree fell onto hiscar. He succumbed to his injuries atINOVA Fairfax Hospital on Thursday,November 24, 2011.

DJ was from Lagos, Nigeria, and cameto us as an exchange student from theNigerian Defense Academy. He met hiswife Sarah Nemetz (New Hampshire)over the computer youngster year whileusing an archaic social network“ISBA/BBS” on NADN. After gradua-tion, he decided not to return to Nigeriaand elected to stay in the DC area andwork for Corporate America. He workedfor Technica Corp of Dulles, VA, andserved as a contractor in the Greater DCMetropolitan area (most recently at FortMeade, MD). He and Sarah were marriedthe day after graduation and had three

97

96children ages 9, 7, and 3 months. We allhave fond memories of DJ and amongmany things we will miss his loud laughand great heart. ■

Thanks to Herb Lacy and Tony Then forpromptly bringing this tragic news to ourattention. You all may have seen similarnews sent via class email and on the ’97facebook page. We extend our deepestcondolences to DJ’s family and friendsduring this very difficult time.

LCDR Chris Jason provided a recentupdate from his current duty station:

■ My wife Cheryl and I are currently inWashington, DC, for a Pentagon tour. InDecember 2010, Cheryl gave birth to oursecond son Holden. Our oldest sonDesmond was born before I could getback from Afghanistan, so I’m glad I wasable to be there for the second. Our kidsare 14 months apart so things are prettychaotic. I’m currently assigned to JointStaff J-5, and since moving to DC, I’vebeen happy to run into many classmates. After a career in Washington and Japan, it’snice to be in such a central location andclose to USNA too. For Cheryl and me,this is a great assignment because herfamily is nearby: her sister’s husband is anArmy LTC on Army Staff, and herbrother is another Army LTC at FortMeade, MD. Our next tour will bring usback to NAS Whidbey Island, WA, butthat is not for a while so there are tenmonths of Power Point still ahead. ■

He was waiting for his wife, who had runthe MCM also. He hadn’t seen her yet, soI can’t report on how she did, but Mikelooked proud of her and unfortunately Idon’t remember much else about it,because I was pretty out of it.

I’m heading into work tomorrow formy USMC Reserve job at the Pentagon, and just found out that I’ll be workingalongside a new active duty counterpart. It was CDR Joe Torian ’96 before, butSteve Minihane just took his place. SoI’m going to bring this to work in themorning and hopefully add a Steveupdate. Or maybe just annoy the hell outof him until I get one. (Update: Stevedoesn’t want to give me any news for thisissue, so I am just going to annoy the hellout of him)

And because I haven’t called her outin two months or so, Jenn Marino, sign-up for the 2012 MCM for militarymembers starts in a few short months.

Two short(ish) updates: Rebecca (Chany) Baas and David

Baas just had baby #4 on November 19.Peter Henry Baas arrived verrrry early onthe 19th, weighing in at 9 pounds, 2ounces. Peter joins big sister Caroline (6)and brothers James (4) and Luke (2).Becca is a total pro at this, but I don’tthink she’ll be sending a ton of updatesfor a bit…so I’ll get her permission to addsome pictures, and will hopefully includethem in the next submission.

And the second update, from Anne(Cossitt) Leanos:

■ “This is Anne (Cossitt) Leanos ’98. I could not bear the thought of a photofrom my plebe year being in the publicdomain; so here are some recent ones ofmy family: Alex Leanos (USNA ’99)who many of the math majoring 98ersknow since he is sort of a math whiz...he’shumble and would never describe himselfthat way, but I can; and our 12 y/o sonChristopher; who over the past 2summers has enjoyed swimming, baseballand wrestling camps at USNA.

Alex and I are both SELRES andBGO’s, he’s an EDO and a mechanicalengineer at Caterpillar, Inc; on aMountain Biking team sponsored byGoose Island 312 & on AT right nowspending his weekend doing a 160 milebike ride to Raise $ for EOD WoundedWarriors. We live near Peoria, IL, I am aPAO & will be heading up Navy WeekChicago this summer, one of about 20different 1812 commemorations the Navyis celebrating all over the country.

I am a Sales Director with Mary KaySkin Care and Cosmetics leading a team

of 100+ consultants, and drive a PinkCadillac SRX. Good luck to you Dave ifyou run the USMC marathon, I ran theNike women’s marathon in San Francisco, and I now consider that box fully &completely checked:) Best, Anne” ■

The two attached pictures are from Anne:with her husband and son Christopher, and with her pink Cadillac. Anne, thanksfor the update, and congratulations on thesuccess and your family…

And that’s all I have. I think this issuecomes out in January, so I hope everyonehad a great holiday season, and hopefullyNavy beat Army. I think we’ll miss mostof the game unfortunately, since my oldestis going to be an angel (a non-speakingone) in the Nativity Play that day. I’msigning off now, because it’s MondayNight Football and my Saints are playingthe Giants. I hope to see plenty ofManning face over the next four hours.(Update: I did. Great game, Saints won49-24. It was divine.)

Breaking out the wretched plebe yearpictures next time around, unless I havesome good stuff. And I won’t stop at onlyplebe year ones, although I won’t post anyfrom the Ring Dance booze cruise. I maywant to run for public office someday.

Take care, Jeannette

our class contact list. To better facilitatethis effort, it would be ideal to designateone individual from each company toserve as a correspondence representative. Not only would this help us to reach alarger percentage of our class, but wouldlikely bring more news in return to sharewith everyone. I have begun working thisangle with 10th company. If any of youhave interest in being the point of contactfor your company, please let me know.

Thanks for tuning in everyone, and allthe best to you in 2012!

So this evening, while trying to herd thethree cats that are my beloved childrenaround the house, through homework, dinner, cleaning up, and so on, I looked atthe calendar and realized that I had failedto put together a meaningful, funny, andabove all loooooong Shipmate update. And while I promised during the lastupdate that a guest writer would honor uswith his (or her?) thoughts for this issue, and I’m sure many of you are waitingwith bated breath for his/her appearance, said guest writer is mysteriously “busy,” soI am sitting here typing furiously whilestaring out the window at the large, inflat-able snowman and Santa that I just put up.

But I digress. Not a whole lot of updates this time

around (LOREN REINKE, this meansyou! This is me annoying you as promised. And you too, LAURA TUCK MAAS-DAM…). So I get to ramble a bit. Luckyyou all. Rambling first, update second.

First of all, I ran the Marine CorpsMarathon last month. On a nice, balmy30-degree Sunday morning. I willproudly add that I ran it in 3:59:14, whichis waaaaaaaay off of my PR but I honestlyknow I could not have gotten to thatfinish line any faster. Of course, for thoseof you who know my husband ChrisHaynie, he ran the MCM in 3:11. Andhe was disappointed, he really bonkedpretty badly…3:11 being such a shabbytime and all.

After stumbling across the finish line, Iwas trying (unsuccessfully) to make it tothe link-up area, where Chris had mysweatshirt, when I saw Mike McPhail.

Hey there, ’99! Happy 2012!! Only TWOmore years until our 15-year reunion!

We’ve already started the planningphase; if you’d like to help with thereunion, please send an email to BarreAdams-Simmons at [email protected]. It’ll be here before you knowit! Please help out if you can. Hope every-one had a happy and restful holiday season.No submissions for the ’99 column, so Ihad to go and scavenge for informationmyself. HUGE congratulations to ChrisTyson, who married the lovely Jill Tyson,née Wade, over the Thanksgiving holiday inTuscany, Italy. I had the great fortune tomake the trip over to Italy to share in theexperience. Months of planning, a beautifulMedieval castle, perfect fall Tuscan weatherall came together for a lovely, movingwedding. Wish them many years of loveand happiness. While in Italy, I managed tomeet up with one or two folks. DeaconAndy Young took some time out of hishectic seminary studies to share a dinner inRome with me and Josh Greenberg, U-M’98. Andy is in his fifth year of studies tobecome a priest and will be ordained in hishome parish of Sioux Falls, SD, this comingJune.Caroline Rodi ’98 braved the Italiantrain system to meet us in Florence.Caroline is in the midst of a two-year grad-uate program at the University of Milan.Studying what, though, I couldn’t evenbegin to tell you; possibly mastering the artof drinking espresso and speaking withhand gestures. Hope you’re having afavolosa avventura, Rodi! Caroline andAndy mentioned that they have run intoTodd Sanders and his lovely wife, MauraDuggan Sanders ’00 in Naples, Italy.Todd, Maura and their two little munchkinsare living la bella vita in Naples, courtesy ofthe Marine Corps. Sounds like a fantasticboondoggle! That’s it for the boat schoolshippie run-ins while abroad; the world issmall, but not THAT small. I was, unfortu-nately, part of the major debacle that wasthe Hot Chocolate 15k at the NationalHarbor this past December. Waiting infreezing temps for the race to start an hourand a half late; dodging major traffic;

99 running with 20,000 of my closest friends;and ingesting a small portion of the tons ofchocolate fondue that had been sitting outall morning was made all the more worth-while because I was sharing the experience(i.e. pain) with my lovely 15k survivors –Shana Gritsavage ’97, Doc Jo, KirstenWalden, Josh Greenberg, and KatieTraster ’08. Congratulations, Shana, onfinally showing up in Shipmate for the firsttime since graduation!!!! Oh, and on finish-ing the 15k as well. Patrick and CourtneyO’Mahoney also survived the 15k, but Ihave no photographic evidence as theywere much faster than me and my camera. That’s it for this issue. Hope you can helpout with the 15-year reunion!!

Shippies,As a sign of a troubled economy the

alumni association some time ago scaledback the issues of Shipmate. This went overlike a “blankety blank in a blank” (pick yourfavorite analogy where something does notgo well) with a majority of alumni, and theShipmate Ship has since been steered backto its proper course. We are now rolling outcolor pictures in the class columns. You neednot be Warren Buffet to figure out that thisis a good sign for the economy as well as thehuman race.

I was short on submissions this monthso deal with my trivia. I am going to postsome clues here and then the answer willbe at the bottom. I shall call this game“Name that Classmate.”

Take a stab at who the classmate is…1. That used to, as Midshipman, (and

still might) set his alarm to wake up in themiddle of the night to watch reruns ofMagnum P.I.

2. That once refused to leave thekitchen of a restaurant until a dishwasherwould relinquish as part of a trade hisMiami Vice T-shirt.

3. That had a bust of Ronald Reaganon his desk in Bancroft.

4. That had a radio show on WNAVhe cohosted with another classmate thatplayed only eighties music.

5. Now works for NASA.That’s all you get. Now if you are

reading these clues and somealarming/awkward/bizarre/not plausiblehabits of a classmate are jumping into your

skull and making you giggle, then youneed to email me those. The formatshould look something like the above.

In other news, being back at the Naval Academy is awesome. If I wouldhave had to come up with one word ondescribing a room full of Plebes this pastsummer, it would have been “smelly.”Now that they have figured out whichway is up and yet are still the most curiouscreatures in captivity I would use the word “motivational.”

Our class was well represented at 6thCompany’s Giving Tree Ceremony andone of the highlights of said ceremony wasErik Herrmann’s mustache. Earlier in thefall the 3rd Annual Ripley Race wasreunion of many and I spent most of the5k race learning stroller running tips fromAustin Yoder and his lovely wife.

Enjoy the Giving Tree Ceremonyphoto and the Hero Walk photo from afew years back.

■ I’m writing with a quick update on afew 2003 classmates. My family hasincreased to 4, and I’m completely outnumbered by girls now with my 6 monthold daughter Michaela, a 3.5 year oldGabriella and of course my wife Christine.I came off of a 4-month active duty assign-ment in Norfolk, VA at Marine ForcesCommand on September 28th and imme-diately headed out on a 10-day vacationwith the entire Fay crew. After an October1st wedding in Dallas, TX, we took theAmtrak down to Austin, Texas and linkedup with Garrett Cox (‘03), his wife Jamie, and their 3-year-old daughter Katelyn.Jamie is due any day now and Garrett will

After ourvisit with the Cox family we flew out toSan Diego, after driving up to Disneyland,we stopped in at Crossfit Ethos (LagunaHills), which is owned and operated byJimi Lechford (‘03). Unfortunately theLechford family was not around, but theirgym is incredible and anyone in OrangeCounty, CA interested in Crossfit shouldgo see Jimi. The culminating event of ourvacation was the wedding of Brian “BJ”Reitter, and Gianni DeMichele, both 2003graduates. BJ and Gianni got married atthe Prado in San Diego and there were ahost of USNA classmates in attendance(Lauren Pizzi, Anne Huber (Gates), KristinHart, Dan Bailey, Jim Vandevoort, MattPreston, Mike Marks). On a weekendwhen the Phillies got knocked out of theplayoffs, the Eagles bit the dust, Brian Stann(‘03) lost a tough fight, and Navy got beatup on the Grid-Iron...this reunion at sucha beautiful wedding ensured that ourfamily vacation ended on a high note. Wearrived back in Philly on Sunday, October9th, and I’m set to begin my civilian careerhere in the City of Brotherly Love. Anyshipmates who find themselves in Philly, look me up...but don’t expect me to takeyou to any sporting events! ■

Although thecolumn has been quiet most of that time,we realize your stories (and photos) areout there – from weddings to port calls, deployments to schools, Afghanistan tothe Med, our classmates have cometogether all around the world. Below is anote from Gray Tompson, written whileaboard the USS George W. Bush. Also,Classmate James Mahan submitted aphoto of he and his new bride, Michelle(Aleszycyk) Mahan, taken at their post-‘Ido’ party on July 9, 2011 in Balboa Park,San Diego, CA. ■ Aught Seven, From Marseille, France onboard USS

GEORGE H W BUSH, a privileged fewof your classmates wish you a belated“Happy Holidays.” We’ll soon pull backinto Norfolk following our good ship’smaiden deployment. For those who readabout it back on the beach, this cruisemay have won renown for its “dire”plumbing problem—seriously it madeNY Times. However what I will remem-ber is the four different Sixth Fleetportcalls, my friends flying their firstcombat missions in country, a $10,000Bahrain Wetting Down (thanks againAsh), a swimcall in the Indian Ocean, theBILLS dominating AFN’s coverage of theNFL season, and the CO making it rainduring “Big Bucks Bingo” on SITE TV.
