With an illustrious history spanning nearly two centuries, Cammell Laird has built more than 1390 ships, both naval and commercial. Many vessels built at the yard are famous for their innovative technology, including the first ever steel ship and the world’s first all-welded ship. Others, from the American Civil War screw sloop ‘Alabama’ to the aircraft carrier ‘Ark Royal’, were both pioneering and gained celebrity for their subsequent careers at sea.

Maintaining its legacy of innovation, Cammell Laird continues to build high quality ships at the cutting edge of technology to meet the demands of ever changing requirements.

Focussing on bespoke designs for specific applications, Cammell Laird is able to produce specialised vessels as diverse as RoRo Ferries, Research vessels and LPG Carriers, as well as manufacturing complex units such as submarine and aircraft carrier modules.

A specialist technical team of naval architects, marine engineers, electrical engineers and marine design draughtsmen provides the expertise to deliver turnkey shipbuilding and conversion projects from concept to completion. A skilled and motivated production workforce more than 700 strong is supported by experienced project management and administration personnel.

SPECIALISED SHIPBUILDERS

The shipyard offers comprehensive engineering facilities including a modular construction hall, one of the largest and best of its kind in Europe. In recent years the hall has seen a number of major fabrication projects including building the flight decks for the ‘Queen Elizabeth’ class aircraft carrier and the side by side construction of the sister ships ‘Sound of Soay’ and ‘Sound of Seil’.

The NERC New Polar Research Vessel ‘Sir David Attenborough’ will benefit from being built under cover in the construction hall that allows large steelwork units such as complete hulls or project specific modules to be constructed without environmental interference.

Structures and vessels can be loaded out from the hall to heavy load out quays situated on a non-tidal wet basin. There is direct river access via a slipway launch and vehicular access for large module transportation to the dry docks.

The construction hall is supported by over 10,000m² of fully equipped fabrication, pipe, machine and fitting shops and a blast and coating facility.

Cammell Laird sits at the centre of a marine technology hub on Merseyside, a world class maritime cluster encompassing all the trades, skills and training required for high quality shipbuilding, conversion and repair.
