Commodore’s Corner:Greetings South Sound Sailors and Friends! Welcome back from summer! Hopefully you

had a great time outside, in the warmest summer in recent Olympia history, both on and off thewater. Chrisanne and I had a fantastic summer, with lots of sailing, visiting with friends andfamily, and gardening at the Wendell Berry Garden. I raced semi-regularly with Joel Rett onMaranatha, a Ranger 33, and cruised with Tony Cox on Zephyr, a Catalina 250, a number oftimes. I did a little bit of work on my Finn, but didn’t actually manage to get it on the waterbecause I was already sailing about twice a week anyway. Narrows Marina and sailed around beforedocking overnight at Gig Harbor. Thefollowing morning I drove up fromOlympia to meet them at 0830, trying,again, to catch the tide going north.

As we were motoring out of the harborwe joined up with where Robert and hisThunderbird; John hopped aboard withRobert to crew. It was dead calm as thetwo boats motored out of Gig Harbor.About thirty minutesafter turning north inColvis Passage thewind started to comeup from the North, andwe lifted sail. Wewatched as theThunderbird lifted theirsail too, and off weboth went.

We tacked up Colvisto Blake Island, thewind dead on our nose,stiffening slightly toabout six or sevenknots. Tony and I madebetter time in thePassage because westayed in the middlewith shorter tacks;Robert and John tooklonger tacks and sailed into a few holes bythe shore. For about two hours, theCatalina 250 was making better time thanthe Thunderbird, but it wouldn’t happenagain for the rest of the trip.

After getting through Colvis, Tony and Ianchored off Blake Island, where themooring buoys were full. Robert and Johntied to our stern. They climbed aboard, wedrank beer and ate sandwiches and fancycheese and crackers for about an hourbefore we had to cast off again to get toBainbridge by dinner. We continuedsailing north, and as we were passingSeattle, the wind built to about 12 knots,still directly on our nose. Finally we gotclose to Eagle Harbor, dropped sail,motored in, got honked at aggressively bya ferry boat, and had dinner at the lovelyHarbour Public House. After splitting abottle of wine between the four of us onthe back deck of Zephyr, we all turnedabout midnight and slept in until 1000when the warmth of the sun woke us.

The following day we sailed back alongthe west side of Vashon, the wind on ourquarter until we turned est just past MauryIsland. We folded up the sail and motored

back, getting to the dock in Gig Harborabout 1800. Tony, John, and Robert allwent for a burger, while I drove home,looking forward to a great night’s sleep.Robert lives in Gig Harbor, so he washome, but Tony and John would be sailinghome the next day.

It was a fantastic trip, one that I willremember for a lifetime. So now for themessage.

Sometime sailing down the east side ofVashon Island, Tony and I figured out howmany other sail boats we had seen duringour trip. About seven sailboats passed usgoing up Colvis, all but one motoring, andseveral with their mainsails up and luffing.We saw another four to six sailboats infront of Seattle. We saw about as many onthe southbound trip.

So here we were on the best sailingweekend of the year, in the best sailingregion on the West Coast, of the coast ofthe most populous two counties inWashington, and we saw only twentysailboats. It was great to have lots and lotsof room, but really, seeing so few sailboats

kind of bothered me, not just because Iwould have liked to have someone to callon VHF if something went wrong.

It bothered me most because I worry thatif we keep going this way, the entiresailing community may disappear!

Tony and I talked about it, as we oftendo when we are the only boat sailing insome large body of water on Puget Sound.He thought people are lazy and instant

gratification oriented today. Icountered that the thousands ofjoggers we see on the roads aren’t likethat, nor are the people floodinggraduate school, learning to playmusic, etc.

Maybe it just reflects informedchoices people make? But I know lotsof people who would like to sail moreoften and have a boat, or enjoyedsailing a few times and vaguely wishthey sailed more, or think it might befun but have never had an opportunityto try it. So I don’t think that folksdon’t like it, but just that it isn’tpossible on a given morning for themto sail so they drift toward otherthings: video games, jogging, graduateschool, whatever.

Why isn’t it possible forthese potential sailors to getout on the water? Is it tooexpensive? It is hardly freeto acquire a boat, but thereare lots of opportunities forcrewing and boats areactually kind of cheapcompared to some hobbieslike RV-ing.

The problem, I think, isthat while people are nomore lazy than in the past,they might be less likely to

self-organize into stable groups that dothings together. The media and thousandsof cultural messages guide usunconsciously to buying stuff so we can dosomething by ourselves. think aboutkayaking), or maybe with a spouse, butsailing and maintaining a boat requires, Ithink, several people, maybe about 4 to 6people to make it really work and to makeit fun. Many people don’t belong to such agroup, whether as owners or crew, sowhen a gorgeous weekend rolls aroundthey don’t aren’t ready to get out on thewater like we were.

Secretary’s Report: Dues DueThe SSSS year starts in September. Don’t forget to pay your Membership dues,

still only $45. These dues allow you to access SSSS benefits including reciprocalmoorage at yacht clubs throughout the Sound. If you plan to race PHRF, pay the$35 race fee too, $80 total.

Fill out the Membership form that came with your S-t-S and bring it to theMeeting. Otherwise mail it to us, along with your check, or pay on line.

For the 2014-2015 year we are introducing electronic Handbooks. KeepingMembership costs low in a priority for the SSSS. Electronic Handbooks can help us

keep costs down by reducingour printing volume.

Handbooks will bedistributed via e-mail in PDFformat to Members who havepaid Membership fees for2014-2015. We will use thee-mail addresses we have onrecord so please help us ensurethat we have your current e-mail address by putting it onyour Membership Form.

people, about 3 boats, and the habit ofmeeting once a week to sail or work on theboats or at least have a drink at the pub. Ilucked into the group because I sat next toJoel Rett, the most awesome skipper at SSSS,where there are a lot of awesome skippers forcompetition, almost four years ago, and thebase of that clan is him and the crew he puttogether for racing. My clan has sinceexpanded because Tony Cox needed crew andI sailed with him on a regular basis. ThenTony raced with Joel, met Sandy, and helpedher work on her trimarran, so now she sailsher trimaran with us too, though she wasalready a core member of Joel’s crew.

Such a clan not only gives the skippers crewand labor for the occasional maintenance job,but it gives crew training and mentorship, anddevelops friendships that go far beyond thesimple act of sailing. It might be a stretch, butI believe that while we might join a grouppurely to get more sailing, sailing can in turninspire us to build betterfriendships andcommunities by having afun reason to learn tocooperate better. Suchcooperation leads to moresailing, in a feedback loopof nautical goodness andsociability.

The SSSS enabled mefind this clan, and it helpsclans like us recruit andconnect in very importantways, but it is up to us inour small groups to do thework, if you call drinking beer and racingsailboats on a regular basis work, to keep itgoing.

So I encourage skippers and crew to thinkabout building and joining such groups.Skippers, actively think about what it takes tobuild camaraderie and keep a regular scheduleat least. Crew, help out with boat maintenanceand clean up, bring gear to be self-sufficient,and buy in to the group. A lot of race boatshave such a thing going on anyway. Thebenefits to everyone included are enormous:crew, boats, labor, friendship, a bit ofdiscipline, and maybe even make the world abetter place.

And please let me know if I can help youdevelop your clan or group as Commodore.And if you have any ideas about outreach anddevelopment, I would love to hear them too.

Scorer’s Report:Remember to pay your Race Fee

before racing. And if you make anychanges to your handicap, make sure tohave the Handicapper tell me. I canscore you faster that way.

If you are new to racing with us,remember to tell me after you gethandicapped.

COURSE DISTANCE CHANGEWe used to print the distance between

the buoy marks, rounded to the nearesttenth. We then added the length of thelegs to get the distance of the race. Wecontinued with this way of computingdistance even after we started computing

leg length each race, and moreimportantly, we started sailing that legmultiple times. The rounding error insetting the leg length gets repeated fromtwo to six times figuring the coursedistance.

Until this summer. We now take theleg length in as many decimal places aswe compute and round only aftermultiplying it by twice the number oflaps. But this change is not without itsconfusions. The distance of a lap aroundour fixed marks may appear to changewith the different rounding. And twolaps may be more, or less, than twiceone lap. Do not freak out. That is kind ofthe point of the change.

Star FleetThe summer has been a very good one for the

Star Fleet with mostly good winds and goodturnout of boats for the Monday Night Races.We will finish up the season the first week inSeptember, some match racing, and then behauling out September 14. We need to end ourracing early in September due to the very busyfall big boat racing and cruise schedule. Also Iwill be leaving for the east coast on September21 and won't be home till October 20.

The big non event for the fleet washosting the District 6 Championships.There were two divisions, TheChampionship Division, open to onlythose who are paved members of the StarClass and an Open Division for anyonewho wanted to compete. TheChampionship Division has a number ofvery strict rules concerning time limitsand course length. With the light fluky aironly two raceswere completedfor them. Threewas theminimum tocrown aChampion. Soafter two days oftrying, it wasdeclared a nonevent.

In the opendivision we wereunder noconstraints. Wecompleted 4 races with two woodys placingfirst and second out of nine registered boatssailing.. Our District Secretary, Foss Millerfrom the Seattle Fleet, skippered Sparkle to afirst. Jeff skippered 06, another woody, to asecond place finish. A third woody skippered bya fellow from the Vancouver, BC fleet finishedlast. I crewed on Sparkle on Saturday with Foss.Catherine Hovell crewed with him on Sunday.Even though it wasn't perfect race conditions as

far as the winds go, everyone still had a greattime.

I want to thank Vicky Shelden for being thePRO and all her helpers of which there weremany. I especially want to thank Norm Smit forthe great organizing effort he put into this eventVicky had here hands full getting enough racecommittee people together and setting thecourses under very trying conditions. GaryPedigo supplied and ran the committee boat.Thera, bless her heart, was there to help on one

of the mark boats and takepictures both days. Therahas been part of all the Starevents since the first BlackStar Regatta. We all reallyappreciate her being there,Thank you Thera! ! ! I could

try to name everyone involved but I know Iwould miss a few so I will just say thank youall. Also special thanks to the marina andTugboat Annies who provided the room andserved up a good dinner and does so knowingthat they have to work around a flexibleschedule. Again, Thank you all.! ! !

This year has also seen a good turnout eachrace night averaging 14 boats/race with a highof 19. Our turnouts are the envy of most of theother fleets in the country and makes me feel allthe sweat and tears I have put into this fleet areworth while. I have two woodys and four glassboats for sale if anyone is interested in buyingone for the next season. All of the boats are raceready, some better then others and prices very,depending on condition. I would like to see allthe boats in good hands for the 2015 season.

This was a summer toremember for dinghy racing.Thanks to the help of the highschool sailing team, we set a onenight record turnout of 20 boatsand a series record turnout of 31boats. In July we had a greatRace to Somewhere, the first tofinish race out to Gull Harborfor a potluck/picnic and thetimed handicap race back. 10boats participated, four of whichwere from out of town, two fromnorth of Seattle and two fromthe Portland area. The Laser OneDesign fleet has grown to 9boats in a race and 14 boats in aseries.

The wind gods finally favoredthe Thursday night group withreasonable to great wind almostevery race night. In the past, theusual scenario was great wind onMonday night for the Stars,great wind on Wednesday nightfor the PHRF and nothing leftfor Thursday night dinghyracing. This year it was beingshared around a little more.

When you receive this therewill be at least one more race forthe Dinghy Fleet. It’s our FallRegatta withpicnic/potluck/awards ceremonyon Sunday, September 7 withracing starting at 1500 andpotluck etc. at the Swantowngrassy knoll after; about 1800.

All in all it was a summer toremember and thanks to all thedinghy racers for making it so.

Cruise NewsCOMMODORES’ CRUISEVaughn Bay - September 20-21

Welcome back to another year ofgreat destinations, wonderful food,fabulous friendships and unfurledsails. Our first cruise of the year isthe highly anticipatedCommodores’ Cruise to VaughnBay in Case Inlet. Tides shouldmake this year’s entry and exitfrom the bay very easy. Theweather always favors us for thisCruise. We expect a scrumptiouspotluck and bonfire on the spitbeginning around 1800.

If this is your first trip to VaughnBay, be sure to turn south andparallel the spit after entering thebay. While there are shallow spotsin the bay, particularly along thenorthern shore, the entry is prettyeasy. If in doubt follow someone inor hail us on Channel 68 and we’lllend a hand.

OYSTERFEST CRUISEShelton YC, October 4-5

Go with the flow, and the tide),anold salt once said. And that is whatwe’ll do for the Oysterfest Cruiseto the Shelton Yacht Club onOctober 4 and 5. The tide atArcadia Point will be .7 at 0843rising to 14' at 1529. We’ll gatherjust north of Hope Island at 1100on Saturday and head upHammersley Inlet. The trip is lessthan an hour but has some shallowspots so using good charts orfollowing someone who does is amust.

A pot luck at 1800 will follow anafternoon of slurping oysters,tasting wine and beer and enjoyingsome great music at the annualShelton festival. A shuttle bus willpick us up and deliver us back tothe yacht club.

Sunday’s tides at Shelton shouldallow us an easy exit by 1300. Icertainly hope you will join us forsome adventure, fun and a veryscenic trip up Hammersley Inlet.

RC Report:Starting the Year

The 2014/15 year of sailing is upon us. It’sbeen a great summer of sunshine, amazingsunsets and good breeze for the most part. Ihope that you have been able to takeadvantage of the great weather out on thewater. For the PHRF racers, the First andSecond Wednesday night Series had greatbreeze. The Secretary’s Series was a bit moreunpredictable as if often is, with an Easterly, amissing Tykle Cove mark, and dying breeze.Each series saw close to 30 boats participatingwith about a third completing all the races in a

series. The Summer Championship is based onthe best six finishes of 12 possible races.Opposition, Fjord, and Miss Conduct all swepttheir respective classes with perfect scores ofsix first place finishes. S Class came down tothe last race of the summer with McSwooshprevailing over Flying Circus.

The missing mark was recovered off thebeach by Joel Rett and Steve Worcester abouta mile north of Priest Point Park thanks to acall from a friendly homeowner that noticed iton her beach. It’s somewhat of a mystery as towhy the marks go missing. This time theTykle mark decided to go gunkholing overLakefair weekend!? We’ve decided to relocatethe mark about 250 yards north of theOlympia Shoal dolphin in hopes of keeping itout of the shipping channel and out of the oh-so-brutal wind hole that it has resided in forthe last few years. If nothing else it will giveus all a new challenge. Larry Kutz graciouslyvolunteers his time to set and maintain the

marks so when you get a chance kindly thankhim for his help.

2014/15 promises another full schedule with32 PHRF races hosted by our club. Please beprepared to sign up for Race Committee dutyat the first meeting in September or by e-mailing me at [email protected]. The raceprogram relies on volunteers to manage andrun races as both committee boats and markboats. This keeps our costs extremely low andgives everyone a chance to better understandthe process of running races. All racers areasked to volunteer for one race per season. Ifyou’ve never volunteered for Race Committeeduty or would just like some help, please letme know. I will try to find someone with

experience to go out with you.Please extend a special thanks

to all the volunteers that helpedwith the Burger Night BBQsthis summer including, but notlimited to, George and BettyHansen, Barbra Emmons, andMicki McNaughton. This eventcontinues to be a success thanksto volunteer support. There willbe an opportunity to sign up tohelp with next summer’s BurgerNights at the SeptemberMeeting.

Outside Budd Inlet, it was aspecial year for West Coastoffshore races with the PacificCup, Vic Maui and SingleHanded Trans Pac all takingplace during the same month.

I’m not aware of any SSSS racers thatparticipated, but of handful of our competitorsfrom the PNW were in the mix including:Giant Slayer, Terremodo, Kahuna, BladeRunner, Hamachi, New Haven ,and Jam toname a few. I really enjoyed watching the liverace trackers and cheering on the local boys asthey pushed their boats and their bodies to thelimit in races to Hawaii that were plagued byspells of light air and remnants of a tropicalstorm. Both Giant Slayer and Kahuna weredismasted in squalls within miles of the finishyet both managed to finish under jury rig.Nice going guys!!

LifeSling Clinic:First, Stop the Boat

One of the important techniques taught inthe annual LifeSling Clinic is the Quickstop.This allows the skipper to deploy theLifeSling without continuing to sail awayfrom the overboard crew. Once the victimhas the LifeSling in hand, the Quickstop iscrucial to avoid dragging the victim whichcan lead to drowning.

This year’s clinic, held June14, presented some typicalSouth Sound challenges for theskippers trying out theQuickstop for the first time.There was little, to no wind forthe first few rescues whichmade it very difficult to stopand maneuver the boat. Then,some strong wind filled inwhich made it clear why theQuickstop method is needed.

Our volunteer victims are safein bright orange survival suits,but there is still a risk if the boatdoesn’t stop soon enough. Toavoid being dragged, whichcauses water the go over theirhead, our victims let go of theLifeSling if the boat isn’tstopped quickly. A few skippershad the opportunity to enjoy aneducational moment when theyrealized after they dropped sailsthat their victim was no longer attached tothe LifeSling. All of them were able tocorrect the problem and all victims safelyreturned to the boat.

Participants in this year’s clinic were:Barbara Emmons, Peter Crossman, Terry andJanice Dierdorff, Denise Buell, Teri Wolf,Sarasue Essenpreis, Diane Moyer-Fife, TerryVanMeter, Ron Talmadge, Shaughn Jarvis,Marvin Young, Fran Williams, SherryRegister, and Kerry Brink.

Thanks once again to our dedicatedinstructors Rod Tharp, John DeMeyer, JudiKruller, and Gary Ray. And special thanks tothe volunteer victims who just kept fallingoff the boat as many times as needed to giveeach student a chance to do a real rescue:Brandon Raftery, Steve Wyant, MariaChiechi. and Dee Saller.

Soldier Sailing:An Incredible Day

For two years we have struggled toget the soldiers from JBLM to reallydiscover our Soldier Sailing event butthis year, with the help of LTC AaronMarler and his incredible MasterSergeants we were found. Friday nightour numbers for soldiers and familymembers stood at 35 military and 55family for a total of 90 guests. VickySheldon made up a great sheet withinteresting facts about Budd Inlet andplaces to show the visitors. We hadbright blue metal water bottles printedwith our logo to hand out. We had 13dozen cupcakes waiting for frosting plusall the other fixings for a fine picnic andthere were games set aside for the kidsto play and boats waiting to launch. Wefigured there would be some no shows

and our numbers would be just what we planned to host. We Were Ready!Thursday morning Rick Beraholz met me at Cash and Carry and we started buying

groceries for our big event. We trucked all over town in Rick’s big truck, loadingboxes of food, plates, silverware, and condiments. Then we showed up at OYC tostuff them into their refrigerator and freezer. We were happy campers when we gotthat job finished.

On Friday night our kitchen crew met at OYC and doctored store bought potatosalad, mixed up KFC's famous coleslaw, thank you Internet, washed lettuce andtomatoes, sliced onions, and peeled and prepared about eight dozen deviled eggs. Wewere a busy bunch, Scott Schoch came over from Cosmopolias, Roni Stockton drovedown from Tacoma to join the locals, Myra Downing, Susie Zuelke, and myself toput everything together. We finished in about two hours and tucked all the food in thegiant refrigerator at OYC.

Early Saturday morning Roger and I tucked the last of the cupcakes, into the carand headed off with both vehicles packed to the brim with tableware, life vests,coolers, decoration and all the rest of the supplies. How could I ever do this eventwithout his steadfast help? We arrived at Swantown at 1000 to be greeted by ErikNystuen with his truck load of supplies. And our first soldier of the day accompaniedby his Mom.

Glen and Jayne Patrick were waiting for their family to go sailing so they alsopitched in and helped unload. Everyone began decorating the area. Joel Rett, our dockmaster, was already down at the dock with Erik Dahl bringing in the boats. Roni camedown again and was joined by Kathleen Boggs and Susan who were helping greet the

Barbara Stuart RegattaWe had great sailing conditions for the 2014 Barbara Stuart Memorial Regatta. We

started with 10-11 knots steady, gusts to 13-15. It gradually died off to 5-6 knots, guststo 6-8, for the last race. We were able to get in 5 races, with only one shortened. Therewere four boats initially, but Sparkle broke down, backstay cleat, and missed the first 3races. Then Puffin broke an intermediate shroud on the first race and had to retire. Thatleft Annie and Sandy on Beer Thirty ducking it out with Susan and Barbara on Jazz.After three races, Catherine returned to sweep the last two races. So, despite the PRO'sstrong bias for Susan on Jazz, the Barbara Stuart Memorial Regatta perpetual trophywill have Annie'’s and Sandy'’s name engraved on it once more. Congratulations!

soldiers and their families and work on themorning kitchen duties. Next George andBetty Hansen arrived ready to hand outname tags, collect photo permission slips,and check the early arriving solders in forthe day. Debe Andersen came by to help,we were ahead of the game at this point.

About noon, a half hourbefore everyone wassupposed to board and leave,we began to suspect this wasnot going to be the usualSoldier Sailing event. Alreadyclose to 90 people wereregistered and there were stillloads of people waiting inline. Joel and I looked at eachother with rolling eyeballsthinking where are we goingto put everyone. Were wegoing to have enough brightblue bottles? What aboutfood, an army marches on itsstomach, goes that old saying.

Some SSSS skipperswandered by and asked howthings were going, Joelquickly enlisted their help.Rod called Erik Egge and hebrought his boat over. Joel even had hisboat ready, just in case. He carried thefinal four arrivals who had gotten lost. Wehad 19 vessels loaded with 136 guests, 43of them soldiers. Turns out one of thecontacts at JBLM hadn't sent in hisnumbers. I found out today that they eventurned other service members away.Anyway Joel deserves major kudos, in ourfamily we call it an Atta Boy, for matchingeveryone up so that no boat wasoverloaded and everyone got on board aboat. A special thank you for the skipperswho volunteered your time and your boats.

I already heard the soldiers had so muchfun they are on coming next year, so beprepared. Joel has all the boat and skippersnames and he will write a separate article

listing everyone with our personal thankyou.

Meanwhile, back at the picnic sight NanLeatherwood joined the kitchen crew whileErik and I made a quick run back to Cashand Carry to augment our supplies. Wefinally had enough food to feed everyone.

Erik Dahl hid the rubber duckies for thekids to find, the kitchen crew drove off topick up the food and load it into ourtemporary refrigerator, small swimmingpools filled with ice and protected bysheets to keep the cold in and the bugs out.Mel Schaefer and Erik Nystuen mannedthe grills to cook the hamburgers and hotdogs. At the end of the day, all the deviledeggs got eaten. The frozen hamburgers, thepotato chips, and cheese were sold toRichard Bigley for Tuesday’s awardsdinner. The extrapotato salad andcoleslaw and one trayof cupcakes made itsway to the Salvation

Army kitchen to be enjoyed by some veryhungry folks.

Again Steve Worcester, as skipper, andThera Black, as photographer, headed outin Bill Rosins' runabout to keep tabs onwhat was happening on the water. Thisyear they also dressed up as pirates to visit

the sailing ships daring toenter their Budd Bay Waters.Jack De Meyer managed tosecure a pirate flag and pole tofly it from. He even produceda pirate ax to banish in the air.There was plenty of booty togo around so all the kidsmanaged a little sugar high.Thera took hundreds ofpictures and they will soon beposted online.

The final clean-up did nottake long, everyone chipped incarrying boxes to the trucks,taking down decorations foruse next year, hauling garbageto the dumpster, and makingsure that the beautiful Swantown picnic area was restoredto order. It was a great event ifyou can judge by the smiles on

everyone’s face.Swan town and OYC both have given

Soldiers Sailing with SSSS space andsupport which would be very expensive ifwe had to fork over the dollars to rent theirfacilities and we thank them. In fact if youmoor at Swan town please let them knowhow much you appreciate their support. Ifyou know an OYC member please tellthem too.

Solider Sailingcontinued

We have two major problems we will ponderduring the upcoming year.

1. As I sit here typing up this story I realizehow very lucky we have been for the last 3years. No rain has fallen on any of our events,our luck may not hold out. While we are heartysailors who sail in wind, sleet and snow ourguests might not enjoy that as much as we do,so we need to think about what to do if the raindoes come pouring down. Our planning groupincludes Dave Newton, Alex Bowman, ErikDahl and me, please feel free to let anyone ofthem know about your suggestions.

2. We need to consider ways to get a stablesource of funding. Jim Bogs is looking intofinding long term funding from Boeing. Our$500 gift last year was just a one time eventand we used it to pay for this year, so at thistime we are starting from scratch for funding.We raised $185 dollars, thank you everyonewho donated, at the May Meeting this year. Doyou have ideas or can you can help us to securedollars for next years event?

These events have been lots of work but sogratifying to put together. When the kids are soexcited to be on a boat and the soldiers walkaway smiling from ear to ear that makes mesmile but maybe the words of one of the wife'ssays it best: “Today was the big hug I needed.”
