Hard starting or a gradual loss ofperformance can be caused by carbondeposits lodged in the muffler’s sparkarrester screen. See Figure 35.

In such cases, performance canusually be restored by removing thearrester screen and giving it a thor-ough cleaning with a stiff bristlebrush.

If carbon deposits are severe or ifno performance improvement isnoted, your unit should be returned toyour Shindaiwa dealer for inspection.

Cutter Blade Adjustment

WARNING!

Never operate the unit with adamaged or missing muffler orspark arrester! Operating withmissing or damaged exhaustcomponents is a fire hazard andcould also damage your hearing.

Cutter performance of your unitdepends in great measure on cutterblade clearance. Properly adjustedblades will oscillate freely yet helpprevent binding of cut materialbetween blades. Adjust blades asfollows (Figure 36):1. Loosen all blade locknuts at least

one full turn.2. Tighten each blade shoulder bolt

firmly, and then loosen the shoul-der bolts 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

3. Working from the gearcase end, lock each bolt in place by firmlytightening its locknut whilepreventing the shoulder bolt fromturning.

When shoulder bolt adjustment iscorrect, there should be a gap of0.25–0.50 mm between the cutterblades and the flat washers, and theflat washer beneath each bolt headshould turn freely.

and apply a light coating of oil to allmetal surfaces.

■ Drain all the fuel from the fuel tank.

To remove the remaining fuel fromthe fuel lines and carburetor and withthe fuel drained from the fuel tank.1. Prime the primer bulb until no

more fuel is passing through.2. Start and run the engine until stops

running.3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the

engine will no longer start.

■ Remove the spark plug and pourabout 1/4 ounce of 2-cycle mixingoil into the cylinder through thespark plug hole. Slowly pull therecoil starter 2 or 3 times so oil willevenly coat the interior of theengine. Reinstall the spark plug.

■ Before storing the unit, repair orreplace any worn or damaged parts.

■ Remove the air cleaner elementfrom the carburetor and clean itthoroughly with soap and water. Letdry and reassemble the element.

■ Store the unit in a clean,dust-free area.

CAUTION!Gasoline stored in the carburetorfor extended periods can causehard starting, and could also leadto increased service and mainte-nance costs.

IMPORTANT!

All stored fuels should be stabilizedwith a fuel stabilizer such asSTA-BIL™ , if oil with fuelstabilizer is not used.
