• A member of one of the two great religious divisions of Islam that regards Ali, the son-in law of Muhammad, as the legitimate successor of Muhammad and disregards the three Caliphs who succeeded him.

• Festival of Ashurah- Mourning the death of Imam Hussein (grandson of mohammed)
– Died while rebelling against Sunni Muslims

• Marriage is the foundation of society and family life.– It is critical that each spouse is of the same faith
• Shiites believe that after death their soul either goes to “Garden of Bliss” (paradise) or burns in hell for eternity.– This is determined by the trials and tests that they endured their entire
life.• Cremation is forbidden• In the “Garden of Bliss” all their desires will not only be met but
exceeded.

– Pray 5 times a day
• Almsgiving
– Give 1/40 of their income to needy
• Ramadan
– Fast for 1 month from sun up to sun down
• Pilgramage
– Go to Mecca 1 time during their life
• Jihad
