NOISE ANALYSIS

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The noise around the site is mainly located at the corner of Kneeland Street and John Fitzgerald Surface Rd. Which is at the edge of the Chinatown District/Leather Dis-trict.

Since the Massachusetts 3A Boston is below the site a lot of the sound is buffered with the thick concrete walls that surround it.

The noise while relatively quite during working hours while pick up during commuter hours due tot the South Station Connector Road and Lincoln Street being major thorough-fares at that time.

SUN STUDYA summer sun study and winter sun study shows how the sur-rounding buildings act at the site.

During the summer the site will have the most amount of sun during 8:30 AM through 2:30 PM.

In winter has the same time frame of sun. The only significant difference of loss of light would be at 6:30 AM which would be night in winter.

Ovarall, the site would not have significant shade during most of the school hours until 4:30 PM.

VIOLIN MAKER

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The Violin Maker was the first of the four Artisans that I studied. I look at the instruments that is crafted and how they started the process by first subtraction then with carefully placed extrusions. From this idea I began designing the dorms for the school.

Page 13: Shestha_Studio_II_Portfolio

14

PIANO MAKER

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

For the piano maker I looked at the lid, one of the elements that makes its sound. Closed or open it depends on the hinge So by taking the simple motion of rota-tion I used it to design the school’s classrooms.

Page 15: Shestha_Studio_II_Portfolio

16

BOOK BINDER

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

One learns better with an open book than with a closed book. I created the studio/cafe and the supply/bookstore into pages with an atrium in the middle to be its spine.

Much like turning a page I clipped the corner of the building to mim-ic the next chapter in the artists life.

BUILDING CONCEPT

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

Following the book idea and combining it with the idea of the piano and the violin maker I began to form the school. The idea of an atrium as a window into each classroom a moment in the story where you can see the characters in motion.

I carried this idea through to the stairs and the elevator making them glass so you would know what floor you are on based on what you saw going on around you. So that you could be part of the story but yet separate.

The idea of a vision path as I will call it centers around the idea of opening your mind, much like a book, to the ideas around you. This will be my main concept through-out the rest of the project.

CONCEPT MODEL

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The first concept model was a combination of the elements from the violin, piano, book binder and glass blower.

Page 20: Shestha_Studio_II_Portfolio

GLASS BLOWERGlass was the last artisan that I wanted to take inspiration from. The atrium was the first place I looked to take inspiration from. Creating a shard of glass that, like a prism, lights up the front and sticks out into the street like a beacon.

Like radial impacts on broken glass I laid out my plan for how I want-ed the student and administrative parts of the school to focus on one impact point; the atrium but still keep the context of the spine of a book.

FIRST DESIGN ITERATION

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The first elements of iteration one has been very eye opening. I have learned a lot from what I was able to achieve. I will now take the el-ements that worked and condense them into a more uniform overall design concept.

Page 24: Shestha_Studio_II_Portfolio

24

BUILDING CONCEPT

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The first iteration came along as I pictured it. It had the views I wanted but while the front build-ing was interesting and in the shape of the piano lid like I wanted it with the views that could be seen from both the street and inside the atrium it still feels like it is missing something.

Page 25: Shestha_Studio_II_Portfolio

First Floor Program

Second Floor Program

While the basic idea of how I would want my program to fit worked the shape of the building itself lead to some design issues that will have to be addressed in the second iteration.

The next iteration will focus on combining the violin maker and the piano maker together so that both can utilize the sound rooms and the wood shop area.

The glass blowers will need a fur-nace room and I could add stained glass workers into the program.

I would also like to add the jewel-ery makers into the program and I believe the would work perfectly with the book binders.

SECOND DESIGN ITERATION

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The second iteration looked at combining the three separate buildings into one. The issue with this design was that it created a heavier darker interior and pulled away from the original design con-cept of light filled interior.

SECOND DESIGN PROGRAM ITERATION

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The original idea of an open book views into the classrooms are lost as well as shown in the program.

The public spaces have no way to see up and in unless you are in the Entrance Atrium only.

The idea of other classes seeing into other floors is not possible in this floor plan type.

THIRD DESIGN ITERATION

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The third iteration looked at fixing the issues of the public space in iteration two. The idea of light-ening the core of the building of the public space and re-creating the open layers using the violin as inspiration.

A violin starts out as a solid block of wood that is split and hollowed out to create a void in the middle.

Ultimately this design failed due to the dorm layouts. Some of the rooms would not be able to get natural light.

FINAL DESIGN ITERATION

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The final iteration combined all of the other iterations into one and fixed all of the issues that I had with them.

I added double than what was required for in the program so that the school had enough room to grow or rent space if needed.

I also added a few more things that the program did not ask for. A place for students to sell finished works, a bookstore, a supply store, a library and computer area for study.

32

Glass Atrium/Skeletal Structure Study

Structural Plate Study

By creating sketch models I set out to answer two questions The first question was about the interior atrium. Would it compromise the structural integrity of the building? By building the model I found out that it was not an issue.

The second study was to see if the exterior structure would bring light into the building as I had imagined it would. I learned that the inner atrium would not com-promise the structural integrity of the building.

RE-DEFINING THE GEOMETRY

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

Upon going back and re-defining my geometry I came out with three basic rules to get me to the final iteration.

The layout from my glass study stayed the same so no changes were needed for that.

The violin has a void in its body that music and sound comes from and is protected by the outer shell or body of the violin. I wanted to re-create that void for my inner atrium.

From the piano lid I used the vari-ous degrees of the lid opening and cut that away to create the body of my building.

Page 34: Shestha_Studio_II_Portfolio

34

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

For the precedent studies I looked at the structural elements, exteri-ors of other buildings and interi-ors.

From these I pulled out inspira-tions on how my building would be put together. I looked at rocker structural connections and round structural columns. I wanted to know what would be needed to in-sure that the atrium would stand.

For exterior inspirations to see if this has been done before I looked at a few of Zaha Hadid’s buildings. The first being her Opera House in Guangzhou and the second build-ing being the Library and Learning Centre in Vienna.

For interior inspirations I looked at the same buildings. I wanted to see if my interior atrium’s would work and if they have been done before.

SECTION PROGRAM

Architectural Studio IIDistance Masters of ArchitectureBoston Architectural College

The program I set out for my building ended up being a success in some aspects. You can see into the entrance atrium from some of the classrooms but you lose that sight when you get to the dorms.

The inner atrium was the biggest success. You can see onto the dif-ferent floors from the ground floor. There are spaces where students can display the items that they have made on all of the lab floors.

It lightens up the space in an un-likely way and it makes the build-ing less heavy feeling.

The outer atrium stands at the cor-ner of Chinatown and the Leather District. It will be seen from the street as a shard of glass piercing out into the street from the other flat facades of the surrounding buildings.

The inner atrium is a perfect spot to wait for the next class, display finished projects, and access the school administration staff and conference rooms.

All generic classrooms will be located on the first floor as well as the cafeteria and IT.

The Cafe has a simple layout with its own front door that connects to the inner atrium of the school.

The cafe and shop will let stu-dents sell the finished items they have made and will also serve as an informal meeting space for the school and the people who live in the neighborhood.

The piano labs were the biggest labs next to the glass blowers lab. It required a large space to work on the instruments with sound rooms.

The bigger atrium space in the back allowed for show space of finished piano’s or collections of old pianos that accessed the ele-vator to the basement parking lot for loading and unloading without using the main atrium staircase.

The second floor also housed the bookstore and supply store needed for the students. It can be accessed from the second floor or from the spiral staircase located in the cafe.

The glass lab proved to be the most difficult to design for due to the hot room needed for the fur-naces. The walls had to be thick to handle the heat as well as the floors.

The room had to be wide enough for all of the stations and the tables for the students as well as a room for storing the finished works.

The fourth floor was the easiest to design accept for finding a way to access the vault for the book bind-ers and jewelry makers.

The vault would store all of the precious stones and metals need-ed by both the jewelry lab and the book binders lab.

The dorms were a challenge due to the angles of the overall building. The floor plan, and the entrance atrium glass facade proved to be a challenge.

I managed to get in a few ADA de-signed dorm rooms into each floor. All of the floor plans are double rooms.

Each dorm room has its own kitch-en and common room and each floor has its own private deck to relax on or use as a terrace garden.

The top floor is the only one with two single room apartments. Floors five and six access both ele-vator and staircase exits while the smaller seventh floor access only the main elevator and staircase.
