In this class, several marvels that originated in Ancient China will be explored. You will learn the steps in the silk-making process as you unravel a silkworm cocoon and examine magnetism through the creation of a compass. Many other surprises await! Confucius says…. You must join us! Block by Block (4-5) Do you love engineering and building? Explore the relationships between scale, measurement, and mapmaking (A.K.A. Cartography). You will research major cities in the United States, choose one downtown city block and map it out using mathematical concepts, cartographer’s tools, and Legos®. Calling All Muggles (4-5 & 6-9) Explore the Harry Potter series and create your own fan fiction, fan illustrations, or World of Harry Potter Scrapbook. Delve into spells, potions, charms, herbology, and discover their Latin derivatives. Visit Leavesden Studios through the magic of photography, and learn about creating special effects in the Harry Potter films. For this N.E.W.T. level class, only fans need apply. Do you enjoy some of the gross aspects of science? If so, then this class is for you. In Gross Science we will be creating substances, watching demonstrations and being grossed out by slime. Learn the secrets of the weaponry that made them feared throughout history. Each day we will construct (simulated) weapons and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these fearsome foes. Learning Factory Maker Space (6-9) Do you like to tinker? Do you like to figure out what makes things tick? Then join me in the Maker Space, where you will engage in various activities in robotics, circuitry, engineering, and computer science. While creating we will focus on building your capacities to use creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. Mind Your Own Business: Economics for Fun (4-5) Exploring economics is more than just dollars and cents. You can build a business from the ground up by exploring widgets, designing a store front, drafting plans, building a 3D model and even drinking lemonade. Playing with Words (4-5) Explore the English language by playing with words. The class will include onomatopoeia, alliteration, palindromes, riddles and jokes, and more. Rocketry (6-9) People have been building and launching rockets for centuries. They’re used for entertainment and warfare. They’re also handy for sending payloads to space or sampling atmospheric conditions. Learn about thrust, acceleration and vectors (and a lot about gravity), and then STAND BACK...3...2...1! The Presidency (4-5) The Presidential campaign is in the news! In this class, students will learn about qualifications and responsibilities of the president, how the system of checks and balances works, and how the President works with Congress and the Cabinet to get things done. Your Favorite Novel and More! (4-5 & 6-9) What happens when you finish reading the last page of a great novel? Do you wish that there was more? Well, there can be more and you can make it happen! Build a life-size model of your character! Throw a dinner party for all of the characters in the novel and prepare a themed dish! What if you could cast real actors for the movie version of your novel! Your favorite novel doesn’t have to end until you say so! Yucky Science! (6-9) Millions of microbes call your body home. You need some to live, yet others can colonize your GI tract with pretty nasty side effects. In this course, you will swab and grow bacteria cultures, test for antibiotic resistance and learn disgusting things about your body.

choose NOT to allow your child to be photographed or recorded you should complete the Opt-Out form and submit it with your child’s application for participation. This information will be kept on file during the institute.

REGISTRATION & FEESEnrollment is limited to the first 150

students. To reserve your space for the S.T.E.P.S. Gifted Summer Learning Institute, submit a $50.00 registration fee with your child’s application. The registration fee is non-refundable and is due Friday, May 27th.

The S.T.E.P.S. tuition fee is $200 and must be paid in full by Friday, June 24th. If full payment is not made by this date, students will NOT be guaranteed participation in the program and their space will be offered to students on the waiting list.

PaymentsMoney orders or checks should be

made payable to WS/FCS. In the note line please write S.T.E.P.S. You may make incremental payments to pay the tuition fee for S.T.E.P.S. as long as full tuition is paid by June 24th.

If you submit your registration fee and your child is not one of the first 150 students registered for S.T.E.P.S., your child’s name will be placed on the wait list. Should a space become available after June 24th you will be contacted to determine if you are still interested in having your child participate in the program.

You will be required to pay the tuition fee at that time. Students who are waitlisted due to space availability and do not receive the opportunity to attend the camp, will receive a refund for the registration and any other paid fees.

PURPOSEThe S.T.E.P.S. Gifted Summer

Learning Institute is designed to create enriching opportunities for academically gifted students. S.T.E.P.S. allows talented students to explore personal interests and engage in learning experiences that foster challenge, innovation, and creativity. Students will work under the supervision and guidance of Winston-Salem Forsyth County School teachers with experience in the field of Gifted Education. Students will be nurtured in an environment that encourages academic risk-taking and a celebration of each student’s unique gifts and talents.

GOALS OF S.T.E.P.S• Students explore interests, skills, and aptitudes.• Students engage in intellectual challenges. • Students develop social skills and motivation to learn and work with peers.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITYThe program is available to rising 4th through 9th graders in WS/FCS who have been identified as academically gifted OR who score at the 85th percentile or higher on end-of-grade (EOG) tests.

TEACHER RECOMMENDATION

Since S.T.E.P.S. is an enrichment opportunity, we expect that all students will be highly motivated to participate. To gain more information about your child’s strengths and areas for growth we request a teacher recommendation. This information will assist us in planning and developing learning experiences to meet your child’s needs. All students must have a teacher recommendation to participate in the S.T.E.P.S. Summer Institute. Students are responsible for asking their teacher to complete and submit the recommendation form.

ENRICHMENT COURSE SELECTIONS:

Students will be enrolled in three courses. Classes involve active participation with a variety of daily projects and group activities. Please see descriptions on back panel.

If a course has less than four students, administration reserves the right to cancel it. Every effort will be made to enroll students in their top choices. Enrollment will be assigned based on receipt of student registration and tuition fees.

TRANSPORTATIONParents provide transportation to

and from Sherwood Forest Elementary School. Students are to arrive no later than 8:30AM and should be picked up promptly at 4:00PM.

LUNCH/BREAKSEach student should bring his or her

lunch as well as snacks. Snacks and lunch will be provided for students who are eligible for free/reduced lunch.

T-SHIRT DESIGN COMPETITION

As a part of the tuition, each participant will receive a 2016 S.T.E.P.S. T-Shirt. We invite students to participate in the T-shirt design process. Competing in the design challenge is optional but encouraged! The Summer Institute Staff will select the winning design and this student’s design will be featured on the 2016 S.T.E.P.S. T-shirt. FAMILY INVOLVEMENTWe encourage family involvement

and will host an open house on Sunday, July 17th at Sherwood Forest Elementary from 2:00-4:00.This will be an optional opportunity for families to meet the institute staff, learn more about the workshops, and ask questions. Students will also receive their S.T.E.P.S. T-shirts and lanyards.

On Thursday, July 21st, there will

be a closing exhibition and celebration from 2:00-4:00. During this time students will receive recognition for participation in S.T.E.P.S. and exhibit their work.

PHOTOGRAPHING OF STUDENTS

WS/FCS and programs may use photographs, as well as audio, digital, or video recordings of students to publicize school activities in a variety of outlets. You are asked to review the Photo opt-out form and determine if you will NOT allow your student to participate in photographs, audio, digital, or video recordings during S.T.E.P.S. If you

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE

S.T.E.P.S. will provide before and after program care. The before care program will be offered from 7:00-8:30am. The after program care will be offered from 4:00-6:00pm. There will be a $5 late fee per 5 minutes for students who remain at the program after 6pm. The cost for the before and/or after care program is as follows:

REDUCED FEE AND SCHOLARSHIP

Students eligible for free/reduced-price lunch will have the registration fee waived. They will also receive a reduced S.T.E.P.S. tuition rate of $75. In order to verify student eligibility, please complete the reduced/free application form. There is also an opportunity to receive a full scholarship to the program. Details are included in the Reduced Fee/Scholarship packet.
