James Mckee has just qualified as a Master Professional Level 3 Tennis Coach with the Australian Tennis Profes- sional Coaches association. (ACTPA) It is the ultimate qualificationthe high performance coach which enables James to coach advanced techniques in physical training/ speed /recovery, squad training sessions, mental training and sports psychology, goal setting, sports nutrition, strategies and tactics at elite level. James has been an assistant tennis coach with Sheriff’s Tennis Academy since 2009 whilst studying Geography and Town Planning at UNE. He is a hugely valuable mem- ber of Justin's coaching team and is 100 % behind the players he coaches. Well done James ! The NIAS/ North West Development Squad training day at the Gunnedah Tennis Club was a smash. There was a great turnout of players and the weather for once was brilliant. A range of players participated : NIAS and North West Squad members as well as JDS tour- nament players, in total over 33 players attended the training. Five highly experienced coaches offered their skills and knowledge Head NIAS coaches Justin Sherriff and Dale Martin , Leon Naude, James McKee and Craig Louis. The training started with Fitness, then they broke off into groups and moved onto a variety of drills with each different coach and finally matches were played in the afternoon. Not only does the training help the Juniors improve, it was also a lot of fun. The players are extremely fortunate to have such a range of Coaches to pass on what they know and train them and we thank them for a great day of coaching. Grafton Tennis Smashed by Heavy Rain

Junior Development Series Comes to a Close for 2011

Page 3 Issue 2

Werris Creek- a Top Serve of Tennis

The 2011 North West Junior Development series has just com-pleted its final tournament at Narrabri on Sunday June 26th . This year has seen a close battle in the 12s and 14s boys, and the final tournament will mean players have now secured positions in the Champion of Champion event in Inverell on August 20-21 2011. Players are ranked on their top 5 scores from the North West JDs series, with the top 8 of each age group invited to participate in the Champion of Champions event. Many of our Armidale Juniors will be invited to compete at this event and we wish them all the best of luck. The North East region bring their top 8 across to compete for positions in the combined team to play at the Medibank State Final to be held 22nd –24th October.

JDS players from Armidale Will Waterson, Kayla Wicks, Faith Dennehy, Conor Dennehy, Angus Apps and

Sahra Dennehy.

The 2011 North Coast Open Tennis Championships was held at Grafton on the long weekend . The Grafton Tournament organisers had brought forward matches on Friday and Saturday in a bid to beat the rain, but prolonged downpours throughout Sunday and Monday meant there was little chance of play or completion of the tournament. The rain briefly stopped on Monday morning before another shower forced the players off the courts and with grey clouds hanging over the venue, it was decided to call off play despite the valiant efforts of some players trying to finish their matches. It was particularly frustrating for the NIAS and North West tennis squads who had travelled for the tournament and were performing very well on the week-end with a lot of the players already making it to the Finals or headed that way. NIAS coaches Justin Sherriff and Dale Martin were extremely im-pressed with the young players determination and grit given the weather and it was a shame the players did not have the opportunity to take out their respective tournament events. The Bus trip organised to take the NIAS and North West Squad was as usual a lot of fun staying at Justin Sherriff’s Parents ―Old Kent Rd Apartments’ which surprisingly is set up like a Monopoly board. Everyone bought a meal to share in the evening and on the Sunday the group all went out for a great dinner and night at a local kid –friendly pub /restaurant where Gunnedah Jun-ior Zac McCann entertained everyone with his eating capabilities– scary on and off the court ! Overall it was a great weekend of Tennis and everyone had a great time in spite of the rain.

Brock Sherriff in great form at the North Coast Open Tennis

Championships.

The Werris Creek Bronze Little Masters Tournament was a great success. Over 60 players competed in beautiful sunny conditions and competition was keen but Junior tennis is about more than just results and the tournament was played in a good sports-like manner. Players came from near and far for the tournament, Brisbane, Sydney, Bathurst and many from the North West region but our Armidale Juniors were very strong in their events. The 16 Girls Doubles was won by local Juniors Adelaide Sherriff and Kayla Wicks and in the mixed doubles Adelaide teamed up with Tamworth player Ciaran Lavers to win again. Kayla also won in the Under 14 Mixed doubles with partner Alex Mitton from Bathurst. Josh Stevenson and Will Waterson made it to the Semi-finals of the Under 14 Boys doubles as did Conor Dennehy in the Under 12 Boys singles. Angus Apps and Partner Kyra Carlyon made it to the Finals of the Under 12 Mixed Doubles but unfortunately went down 6-4 . Finally, young Armidale Junior Joe Gordon won the Under 10 Boys singles by defeating Gunnedah player Liam Novley 7-5. Well done to all who participated– don't forget the more Tourna-ments you play the more you will improve!

Josh Stevenson and Dane Townsend both played well at Werris Creek

Actually, I tossed it nicely – landed nicely, like airplane. No warning, beautiful. That’s the art of throwing racquets.‖
