COMMUNITY NEWS

Greg Thwing, Paul Swanson, Vince Esteves, Wendy Gutierrez, Angie Bessenbacher, volunteer weekly during school and in the after school club, Wyldlife, and are members of the Sunrise Community Church.

Wyldlife is a school club sponsored by teacher, Ms. Jinne Webb.Wyldlife staff member, Wendy Gutierrez and volunteers Paul Swanson, Greg Thwing, Vince Esteves, and Angie Bessenbacher share both curriculum and personal stories with students in Mr. Spence’s character development class by focusing on WISDOM, the center word of the Will Rogers Middle School  P O W E R slogan. Paul Swanson said that “wisdom is the practical application of the knowledge we have to make the best choices about how we live our lives on issues like making a first impression on others, self discipline, positives attitudes, loyalty, gratitude, accepting things you can't change, peer pressure, facing the truth, etc.” Paul teaches on Wednesdays using group discussion questions, reviewing wise quotes from historical figures (past and current), and personal stories. Paul says, “We've even done some fun, crazy, practical ways to appreciate simple things like clean water...by doing a water walk on the track. Before we walk the track with kids carrying heavy 5 gallon buckets, we look at what kids in Uganda, the same age, have to do to acquire water (dirty at that) and transport it, on foot, to their homes every day. Our first try at it, it took 17 different kids, one person at a time, to transport two 5 gallon buckets 1/4 mile (one time around the track).” Paul is also involved in putting together a mentoring program, developing young men student leaders at Will Rogers.
