Meilin Police Station received a report at 9:40 p.m., saying a woman was found dead in the trench. Police also found a bike in the trench. The 3-meter-wide trench has no fences, and according to residents at the neighborhood, the road was slippery and road lamps had been out of service for more than a year. CUTTING-EDGE LED displays made by a Shenzhen company have been used at three sports venues in Russia to provide a visual experience for worldwide fans for 15 matches of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Among the 12 sports venues, Kazan Arena, Kaliningrad Stadium and Rostov Arena are equipped with a LED display of nearly 2,000 square meters made by Shenzhen Absen Opto- electronic Co. Ltd. Matches held at Kazan Arena include South Korea vs. Germany (June 27), one last-16 game (June 30), and one quarterfinal (July 6). At Kaliningrad Stadium, England will play Belgium on June 28. Iceland will play Croatia today at Rostov Arena at which one last-16 game will take place July 2, sources from the LED maker in Bantian, Longgang District, said. In December 2017, Absen won the opportunity to provide on-screen visuals for the Final Draw of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia with its world-class LED display systems. As early as in 2013, Kazan Arena installed a 340-square- meter LED display by Asben primarily used for official infor- mation releases, live videos and instant replays. The product installed at Kazan Arena is Absen A1688, which is capable of delivering the utmost in image quality, product reli- ability, viewing experience and environmental durability, even in temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius. The innovative displays for Kaliningrad Stadium feature a 27-meter-by-15-meter screen built into the wall of the entrance, and two 15.36-meter-by-10.24- meter displays mounted on the wall inside the venue, serving as a functional and decorative part of the stadium’s video system. The configuration of Rostov Arena resembles that of Kalin- ingrad Stadium with two score- boards inside the arena and another mounted on its exterior surface. The display system is integrated into the video system and capable of playing various types of content, according to a release by the company. A listed high-tech company founded in 2001 in Shenzhen, Absen LED display export has ranked No. 1 in the industry for many consecutive years in China. Its displays have been widely used in world sports games such as the NBA, Euro Cup and soccer league tournaments in many countries. The four-year global football tournament kicked off with an opening match between Russia and Saudi Arabia on June 14 in Moscow. A total of 32 interna- tional teams will meet to battle at 64 matches at 12 stadiums in 11 Russian cities in a month. (Han Ximin) World Cup enlists SZ LED screens NEARLY 200,000 Shenzheners are storing their stem cells and immune cells in biotech enter- prises in the city, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported yes- terday. Shenzhen Beike Biotechnol- ogy Co. Ltd. is one of the biotech enterprises that offer stem cell storage services. The charges vary from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yuan, the report said. The entry-level package is priced at 19,800 yuan (US$3,030), including the stor- age of seven tubes of seed cells that can be used seven times. A man surnamed Wang from Bao’an District decided to store cells Sunday. Ten years ago, he came to Shenzhen from his hometown in Hubei Province and has been working in the construction industry for many years. He said years of hard work have taken a toll on his health, so he wants to deposit healthy cells right now in case of use in the future. A woman surnamed Luo from Futian has also stored her cells this year. “My family is a large family, and many friends and relatives have died of cancer. I choose to store my cells, partly because I’m in awe of life,” she said. Up to now, nearly 100,000 people have stored stem cells and immune cells with the company, including both Shenzheners and people from other cities. In par- ticular, those aged between 40 and 55 account for 40 percent and those above 55 years old account for 20 percent. The occupations of these cus- tomers include entrepreneurs, civil servants, staffers, teachers and freelancers. According to BGI, another leading biotech enterprise in Shenzhen, the company has more than 10,000 cell samples and is receiving an increasing number of commercial samples for stor- age in the past two years. Currently, many medium- and small-sized biotech enterprises on the market are also offering commercial cell storage ser- vices. A rough estimate showed that nearly 200,000 people in Shenzhen have stored stem cells and immune cells. According to industry insid- ers, partaking in cell therapy provides many advantages and will be able to be turned into effective medical treatment with the support of a cell bank preparation center. Cell therapy is still considered a high-end treatment option at present. But with the ongoing growth and popularization of the technology, the cost will reduce greatly, thus making it more affordable to ordinary citizens, said insiders. (Zhang Yu) 200K SZers deposit stem cells for future use AFTER undergoing an 11-hour surgery at Luohu Hospital on May 31, a 66-year-old man has part of his lower jaw repaired with a pectoralis major flap taken from his own body to cure the oral cancer, the Shenzhen Evening News reported. The patient surnamed Wu is a fisherman from Yangjiang City of Guangdong Province. He was diagnosed with gingival carci- noma about a year ago, but he ceased undergoing surgical treat- ment in fear of surgical risks. However, as the tumor gradually grew larger, Wu had difficulty eating and speaking. He went to Luohu Hospital. A Uygur doctor surnamed Wuheta’er with the hospital’s stomatolocial center worked out a surgical solution for Wu entail- ing partially removing his lower jaw and recreating the missing portion by using a pectoralis major flap from the patient’s body to thoroughly eliminate cancer cells. According to Wuheta’er, the difficulty of the surgery was that once removed, part of the patient’s lower jaw would not close completely, leading to increased risk that the patient’s neck would become infected with food and saliva, which could lead to death. Therefore, reconstruct- ing the lower jaw with a pectora- lis major flap was considered the best solution. Meanwhile, the complex sur- gery posed a lot of challenges to the medial team led by Wuheta’er as the surgery involved navigat- ing multiple major vessels and nerves in the patient’s face, neck and mouth. Any slight damage of the vessels and nerves would lead to irreversible consequences to the patient. The surgery lasted for 11 hours and Wu was transferred to an ICU at around 10 p.m. The patient could speak and eat over the weekend, about a month after the surgery, according to the hospital. The doctor reminds all resi- dents that oral cancer is one of the most common malignant tumor diseases. Risk for it is increased by leftover food in the mouth, neglect of oral hygiene, smoking and other dental prob- lems. (Zhang Qian) Surgery remakes oral cancer patient’s jaw PEACHES grown in Nanshan District, known locally as “Nanshan peaches,” have been unsalable recently, with only one-third of a crop cultivated in a peach orchard in Xili sold, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported. The peach orchard, close to a water reservoir in Nanshan, is divided into two parts by a road and over 500 peach trees were planted and evenly distributed on both sides. “Despite that this year is a bumper year for peaches, sales were bad compared with litchis,” said Zeng Guohua, head of orchard. He said the output of peaches doubled, reaching about 4,000 kilograms this year, because timely rainfall provided plentiful water for the peaches. According to a history book titled “Nanshanzhi,” Nanshan litchis, Nanshan peaches and Houhai oysters were hailed as the three treasures of Nanshan. Nanshan peaches were exported to Southeast Asia in 1960s. Since the 1980s, Nanshan litchi’s popularity has increased dramatically and cultivated areas of Nanshan peaches were gradually phased out until they were no longer popular among Shenzhen residents. In 2003, owing to joint efforts made by several parties led by Nanshan District Agriculture and Forestry Bureau, over 500 peach trees were planted. Nanshan peaches have pulps and stones that are easy to divide. The peach orchard in Xili will likely be closed down due to its proximity to the water preservation area.
