General Planning GuidelinesBegin with the A B C’s…

A. Select a Shelving Type.Refer to the Recommendations for Storing Common Media (A) sheet for how best to storedifferent materials. This will give a basic understanding of what type shelving is suited to storewhat type of material.

B. Know the media to be stored. Most common media (files, books, 3-ring binders, etc.) have standard clear shelf openings thatcan be used to determine the amount of shelving required for a particular application. The MediaWeights/Shelf Openings (B) charts will give basic weights of different media with standard oncenter openings for different media and standard clear openings. If there is an unusual material to be stored, measure the vertical height of the material todetermine the clear openings required. The clear opening must be used if the material is to beretrieved from the shelving without obstruction from shelf supports or other shelves. Refer to (D)Shelf Openings/ Shelf Spacing for different clear shelf openings for different height uprights.

C. Determine Quantity to be stored. The amount of material to be stored now or in the future will determine the amount of shelvingneeded to meet the requirements. The easiest way to determine how much material needs to be stored is to measure it. Measure asample (in inches) and estimate how much material will need to be stored.Refer to the Filing Inch by Catalog Number (C) sheet to determine the capacity of each shelvingsection.Order the number of single face or double face sections needed to meet the current need. Iffuture expansion is anticipated, order additional sections as needed.

B. Media Weights/ Shelf Openings

The purpose of this information is to help determine the total weight of stored media so shelving can beproperly selected to provide the needed capacity. There are three different styles of shelving to choosefrom to solve your storage requirements. 4-Post, Case Type and Cantilever shelving is available. Refer tothe Shelving Order Form (SC-0010 ECONO/ECONO 2/00) for selection or refer to Recommendations forStoring Common Media (A) for shelving recommendations. The different types of shelving are all wellsuited for storing a variety of materials. Cost, material accessibility and shelving adjustability are some ofthe factors used to determine which shelving is best for each application. For the majority of all typical storage applications, 4-Post shelving with slotted or plain shelves can beutilized.

Background

1. All shelving and uprights listed are based on standard sizes available.2. Weights per item are averages and may vary slightly. (*)3. Weight is based on using usable shelf width. Usable shelf width is inside upright post to inside upright

post. (Does not include space behind post.) Cantilever is inside shelf end bracket to inside shelf endbracket.

4. Standard Shelf on Center Openings are typical but may vary slightly for different brands ormanufactures of material.

5. All media types listed are all suited for storage on 4-Post, Case Type and Cantilever shelving kits.6. 4-Post and Case type shelves are adjustable on 1 ½” centers. Cantilever shelving is adjustable on 1”

centers.7. Shelf openings are based on shelf supports with a ¾” high profile. X-Ray shelving is the exception.

X-Ray shelving is based on a heavy-duty shelf support with a 1 ¼” high profile.

How to Use(See chart on next page)

1. Determine if single face or double face shelving is needed based on shelf openings or load capacityrequired. (**)

2. Select media to be stored by Media Type.3. Under column marked Maximum Weight Per Shelf determine total weight load on shelf.4. If total media weight per shelf section is required for loading purposes, refer to column marked

Maximum Weight Per Shelf Section and determine total weight based on upright height. (***)5. For normal filing applications 4-post or case type shelving spaced on 10 ½” centers will work for 99%

of all applications. This shelving is designed and tested for this exact purpose. All 4-Post and CaseType shelving kits under this program have shelving set up on 10 ½” centers with 9 ¾” clearopenings. The exception is X-Ray shelving kits, which are set up on 16 ½” on center shelf supportswith a clear shelf opening of 15 ¼”.

(*) For an exact weight of stored media, weigh a selected sample.(**) Capacity will be the total shelving space needed to store the material and how much physical floor

space is available for storage. The physical floor space available will determine weather single face ordouble face shelving can be used and how it can be configured in that space. Single face shelving isaccessible from one side of shelf section; double face shelving is accessible from two sides of shelfsection.

(***) Weight capacity of upright must not be exceeded.

C. Shelving Kit Filing Inches by Catalog Number

The purpose of this information is to help determine how many shelving kits will be needed toaccommodate the storage needs for a media or material. All shelving kits in this section are preconfiguredwith a fixed number of shelves for storage. This chart will determine how many shelving kits will beneeded based on the amount of media to be stored and the physical space available for storage.

How to use.By referring to the Recommendations for Storing Common Media (A) sheet, determine if slotted of plainshelves will be needed.By the media being stored, determine if 4-Post, Case Type or Cantilever shelving will work the best.Shelving kits come with a fixed number of shelves but they are adjustable. 4-Post and Case Type shelvesare adjustable on 1 ½” centers. Cantilever shelving is adjustable on 1” centers. All shelf kits are set up for a standard filing application. Shelves are a minimum 10 ½” on center with a 9 ¾” clear opening. The exception is X-Ray shelving kits, which are set up on 16 ½” on center shelfsupports with a clear shelf opening of 15 ¼”.After determining how many shelf-filing inches will be needed to store material and how much space isavailable to install the shelving, refer to the column marked Total linear Filing Inches. This will indicatehow much horizontal shelf space is available for each complete shelf kit. From this, the total number ofshelving kits can be calculated. (Total number of filing inches required divided by the total number of filinginches for one shelving kit.)

Layout Considerations• Kits can be used in combination of single face and double face to meet the storage requirements and

the physical storage space available.• For best appearance keep all shelving kits the same height if possible.• Locate single face shelving kits against walls.• Locate double face shelving kits towards the center of the space to allow access to both sides of

shelving.• Join single face starter and adder-shelving kits together to form rows or ranges.• Join double face starter and adder-shelving kits together to form rows or ranges.• Join shelving kits of the same depth together.• When reviewing the installation space, make note of any floor or ceiling obstructions. Floor drains,

electrical outlets, fire sprinklers, lighting, etc.• When locating shelving kits against walls, make note of any wall switches, electrical outlets, phone

outlets, computer outlets, etc.• Minimum aisle width recommended is 30”. A 36” aisle is preferred for the easiest access and retrieval

of stored materials.• All single face sections are strongly recommended to be anchored to an adjacent wall.

D. Shelf Openings/ Shelf Spacing for Different MediaThe purpose of this information is to help in determining the proper stationary shelving to be used for themedia to be stored. This chart will only address the vertical height requirements of stored media on stationary shelving. For horizontal or filing inch requirements of stored media, consult the Filing Inch by Catalog Number (C) comparison sheet.

Shelving CriteriaThe following criteria will apply to Spacesaver 4-Post and Case Type shelving:

1. All shelves are adjustable on 1 ½” centers only.2. All shelves will be standard ¾” high.3. Shelf openings will apply to slotted or plain, 22 gauge standard file shelves.4. Shelf openings will apply to single face, double face or back to back shelving arrangements.5. Front bases will be standard 2” (2 ½” actual) with the top of the bottom shelf 2 ¾” from the bottom of

the upright.6. Shelf supports will be standard ¾” in height.7. Uprights will be standard heights available.8. Uprights will be closed, open, or case type, configured in angles or tees.9. Usable upright height will be any space usable above the bottom shelf.10. Shelf support on center spacing is the distance from the top of the bottom shelf to the top of the top

shelf.11. “Clear openings between shelf supports” is the distance from the top of the bottom shelf to the bottom

of the top shelf support.

The following criteria will apply to Spacesaver Cantilever type shelving:

1. All shelves are adjustable on 1” centers.2. All shelves are standard ¾” high.3. Shelf openings will apply to slotted or plain shelves.4. All shelves are 18 gauge shelves.5. Shelf openings will apply to single face or double face shelving arrangements.6. Front bases will be standard 3” (3” actual) with the top of the bottom shelf 3” from the bottom of the

upright or above the finished floor.7. Uprights will be standard heights available.8. Usable upright height will be any space usable above the bottom shelf.9. Shelf on center spacing is the distance from the top of the bottom shelf to the top of the top shelf.10. “Clear openings between shelves” is the distance from the top of the bottom shelf to the bottom of the

top shelf.11. For these shelf examples it is assumed that the media stored will not extend above the top of the

shelving frame.

How to Use

1. Measure overall height of media to be stored.2. Refer to 4-Post/Case Type shelving column marked Clear Opening Between Shelf Supports or

Cantilever shelving column marked Clear Opening Between Shelves and determine which shelvingwill have the best vertical fit.

3. Determine overall height of shelving and if it will fit in the designated space that shelving will beinstalled.

4. Measure horizontal width of media to be stored or determine overall number of filing inches required.5. To determine total horizontal or filing inch capacity of shelving, consult Filing Inch by Catalog Number

(C) sheet for the capacity of different shelving types.

E. TerminologyThe terminology here is the common language used in the industry to describe common parts of 4-Post,Case Type and Cantilever shelving assemblies or shelf sections.

Ø 4-Post shelving. A type of steel shelving that uses a vertical post or upright in each corner of a shelf tosupport the weight applied to the shelf. Uprights are available in open and closed types.Case type shelving is considered a 4-post type shelving.

Ø Actual dimensions. The actual physical measurements of a given shelf, upright, or any other shelvingcomponent piece.

Ø Actual Shelf Depth. The actual physical measurement of a shelf depth. 4-Post shelving can be singleface or double face through shelves. Double face can also be a back to back single faceinstallation. Cantilever shelving is measured as individual shelves but can be mounted tothe cantilever frame as single face or double face.

Ø Adder section. Usually added (attached) to a starter sections and will make up the balance of shelvingfor that row or range. Usually not self-supporting and relies on components from thestarter section to provide support.

Ø Adjustable shelf. Any shelf that is movable and is installed between the bottom shelf and the canopy top.4-Post shelving adjustable on 1 ½” centers. Cantilever shelving adjustable on 1” centers.

Ø Anchors. Used to attach shelving sections to an existing structural floor. Usually supplied for eachinstallation by the installation crew and must be appropriate for the type of material to beanchored into.

Ø Angle uprights. A 4-post or case type upright that has one 90 degree bend on each side for attachmentof shelves. Mainly used on the end section of each shelving row. Available in 4-post openor closed types or case type closed only. (2) are provided for each starter section and (1)is provided for each adder section.

Ø Back holders. Used on metal backs to stiffen the back panel and prevent bowing. Used at the top of theback panel.

Ø Back stops. Used on single face shelving, at the back of each opening, to hold up file dividers on slottedshelves. Can also be used on plain shelves to prevent material from pushing off backsideof shelf.

Ø Back to back shelving. Two single face sections of shelving that are positioned to form a double facesection. These sections are independent of each other so shelves can be adjusted todifferent levels if needed.

Ø Backs. Also called metal back panels. Metal back panels close off the back of a single face shelvingsection of 4-Post and Case Type shelving full height and full width. Panels fit to the insideof the upright posts and are held in place by the shelf supports. Also called back panelswhich may metal or wood laminate.

Ø Base shelf. The lowest shelf on a shelf section that can be installed. Cantilever base shelves will have abuilt in 3” kick plate for use primarily for static applications. On 4-Post shelving the frontbase or front kick is separate and held in place by the shelf supports.

Ø Bin dividers. Used with bin shelves to form compartments. Bin dividers are placed vertically onhorizontally placed bin shelves and can be placed every 2” if needed.

Ø Bin fronts. Used with bin shelves and bin dividers to form compartments. Bin fronts are mounted at thefront of the shelf inside the upright.

Ø Bin shelf. A steel shelf that is punched with a series of holes to allow the attachment of bin dividers every2” if needed. Only available in 18 gauge heavy duty type shelving.

Ø Canopy top. Also called top shelf. Plain shelf used in this position. The upper most shelf on a shelvingsection and placed so no additional shelves can be assembled above it. Used mainly tokeep dust off material stored on the top open shelf. Not usually used for open storage butcould be utilized with the proper shelf reinforcements in place.

Ø Cantilever Shelving. A type of steel shelving that uses a completely welded rectangular frame to allowcantilever adjustable and base shelving to “hang” off the post with no support on the frontedge. Used extensively by libraries. Frame is located in the center of a double faceshelving section and at the back of a single face shelving section.

Ø Case Type 4-Post Shelving. Commonly called “Case Type” shelving. A type of steel 4-post shelvingthat has the same support characteristics as 4-post shelving but uses an enclosed spacer tocompletely fill the area behind the post full height and width of the upright. Available inclosed type uprights only. Case Type shelves are 2” shorter than regular 4-Post type shelvesbut will be of comparable width.

Ø Center stops (4-Post). Plain center stops. Used to divide a double face shelf horizontally down thecenter. This type center stop does not have slots built in to support a file divider. Mainlyused for bulk storage. Available in 2” and 4” high.

Page 32

Ø Clear shelf opening. The measurement from the top of a lower shelf to the bottom of the lowest part orcomponent of the next vertical shelf above.

Ø Closed uprights. Vertical supports for 4-post shelving that are completely closed full height and full widthof upright, with a steel filler panel. Uprights will have built in keyhole slots for attachment ofshelf supports.

Ø Double face. (DF)Shelving that can be accessed from both sides of the shelving section. Usually placedin a room so access can be from both sides.

Ø End panel. Also called face panel. Used to cover the end of a shelving range or row. Non-structural, themain function is to add a finished look to the end of a row or range.

Ø Face panel. Same as end panel.Ø File divider. Used to divide slotted shelves into individual sections. Mainly used to support files on slotted

shelves. Can be used every 2” on 4-Post slotted shelving and every 1” on cantileverslotted shelving.

Ø File shelves. A 22 gauge steel shelf used for most light load and filing requirements. Also called aStandard shelf. Available in plain or slotted for use with file dividers.

Ø Filing inches. The amount of horizontal space on a shelf that is usable after support post and endbrackets are deducted from the overall shelf width.

Ø Flat cardholder. A 3” X 5” cardholder designed to attach to an end panel for identification of the shelf rowcontents. Applied with double stick tape provided with cardholder. 3” X 5” cards notincluded.

Ø Front base. Used at the front of 4-post shelving and case type shelving, this piece closes off the gapbetween the bottom shelf support and the floor. This is a non-structural piece and isusually provided for cosmetic reasons. Front base is held in place by the lowest shelfsupport at the front of the shelving section.

Ø Gusset. A reinforcement piece added to a structural member to provide additional support. Used oncantilever shelving for mobile or seismic applications.

Ø Heavy duty shelves. An 18 gauge steel shelf used for heavier loads than a file shelf (22 gauge) isdesigned to handle. Typical use: X-Ray applications.

Ø Label holder (magnetic). Attaches to front of shelf to hold a label for contents identification.Ø Levelers. Built in or attached to the main vertical support structures of a shelf section, these will

compensate for uneven floors and allow the shelf section to be installed level and plumb.Ø Mobile shelving. Shelving that is placed on a base or carriage that has wheels attached to provide easy

movement of the shelving in a controlled path.Ø Nominal dimensions. Usually used for library type shelving applications (Cantilever shelving), this is the

actual shelf depth plus half of the space taken up by the supporting frame which is usually1”. Deduct 1” from the nominal shelf dimension to find the actual shelf depth. Also callednominal shelf depth.

Ø On center shelf openings. The measurement from the top of one horizontally placed shelf to the top ofthe next horizontally placed shelf above or below.

Ø Open uprights. Vertical supports for 4-post shelving that are not completely closed full height or full widthwith a steel filler panel. Open uprights generally have 3 narrow steel strips evenly spacedalong the height of the upright to keep the vertical posts parallel.

Ø Overall height. The measurement of all components that add up to the vertical dimension.Ø Plain shelf. A steel shelf that does not have slots punched in it for attachment of file dividers. This type 4-

post shelf may be punched with three holes down the center for attachment of a centerstop.

Ø Range. Usually refers to sections of shelving in a library that are attached together in a row and arecompletely free standing. Also called shelf range or shelving range.

Ø Reference shelf. A shelving accessory that attaches under a shelf and pulls out and retracts as needed. Also called a posting shelf.

Ø Shelf height. Facing the shelf opening, shelf height is the floor to ceiling direction.Ø Shelf range. A length of shelving consisting of one or more shelving sections that are connected together

in one continuous length.Ø Shelf reinforcement. Installed under the 4-Post or Case Type plain or slotted shelf and on top of the shelf

support to add greater load carrying capacity and prevent shelf deflection.Ø Shelf section. One complete group of shelf parts assembled to form a usable array of shelves that is

independent of other shelves but may be connected to other shelves to form a shelfrange.

Ø Shelf supports. Used to support plain or slotted shelves by attaching horizontally to open or closeduprights and the shelf is placed on top of the shelf supports. Requirements are two pershelf.

Ø Shelf width. Facing the shelf opening, the shelf width is the left to right direction.Ø Shelving Components. An individual part that makes up a shelving section.

Page 33

Ø Shelving depth. Facing the shelf opening, shelving depth is the direction from the front of the shelf to theback of the shelf.

Ø Shelving growth. A dimension given to components, when they are manufactured, that usually is greaterthan the intended finished dimension. This usually occurs due to inconsistencies in themanufacturing process. This dimension will vary from product line to product line.

Ø Shelving kits. Shelving components that are preconfigured into one catalog number with all thenecessary components to be assembled into a complete shelving section.

Ø Shelving Section. A complete freestanding unit which can support itself and has all the necessarycomponents to be functional.

Ø Single face. (SF)Shelving that is usually accessible from only one side.Ø Slotted center stops. Used to divide a double face slotted shelf horizontally down the center and support

a file divider.Ø Slotted shelf. A steel shelf that is punched to allow for the attachment of steel file dividers. This type shelf

may also be punched with three holes down the center of the shelf to allow for theattachment of a center stop for Double Face applications. For single face applications aslotted backstop is used at the back of the opening. The slotted center stop and back stopsupports the file divider on the shelf at the back.

Ø Starter section. Usually the first section of shelving in a row or range that is free standing by itself. Maybea single face section or a double face section.

Ø Static shelving. Shelving that is fixed to the floor or set on the floor in one spot.Ø Tee upright. A 4-post or case type upright that has two 90 degree bends on each side for attachment of

shelves. Mainly used between angle uprights to support intermediate sections. Availablein 4-post open and closed types and in case type closed only.

Ø Upright. Usually refers to the structural vertical support column or member of 4-Post and Case Typeshelving, which functions to support all the shelves. With Cantilever shelving, the centersupport frame could be considered an upright.

Ø Welded frame. (This is only applicable to cantilever type shelving.) The main support frame for theshelving section in which all shelving components are attached. Usually consisting of anupper tube and a lower channel welded to the two vertical support pieces.

Ø Wide Span Shelving. A type of steel shelving that uses a heavy duty, 4-post type support system tosupport very heavy loads with horizontal support beams that span long distances. Usuallyonly available in 4 foot and 8 foot wide sections. Available in open type uprights only.Used extensively for bulk storage.
