For the interview project of the EGL – FCE for the months of March and April, the class went around the college campus to conduct interviews on the Campus Lifestyles @ Shelton. Together with the UI class and the Thai visiting students from Suan Kularb School of Thonburi, Thailand, the Immersion Program of 18th to 26th March 2014, we were seen chatting with both the live-in and live-out students of Shelton as well as the Thai visitors, and at the end we made comparisons of these campus lifestyles with other universities online.

Generally, the live-in students exercise in the morning before taking breakfast. Study takes up a major part of the weekdays. After school, some will go shopping for their groceries or run their own errands while others will play sports like, badminton or basketball. Then the gate closes at 7 p.m. where the high school students will do their homework for two hours under the supervision of a teacher. Weekends, some students will go to the state library or the mall while others stay back to do school activities together like, cooking or play sports. We got to make pizza and sushi, and some other students went canoeing!

For those who live out, they usually go straight to their classes but catch up with their classmates during breaks at the cafeteria or the student lounge. Weekends, they either go shopping or join the school activities with those who live in.

As for the Thai visitors, they usually join the Immersion Program in the morning to learn English. We make many new friends and exchange cultures and ideas through this program. In the afternoon, they go sightseeing and shopping. They will come back late with lots and lots of shopping bags! They always make sure to bring back colourful souvenirs with them.

Then we got to compare our campus lifestyles with three universities online – the Spartans at Michigan State University as well as Harvard. We learn about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle wherever you are.

I came to Singapore last June. And living @ Shelton is such a memorable experience.

The happiest thing is the fact that I have made many friends from China and other countries. We have left home for study in Singapore and so we all have the same emotions. We usually talk about our families, hometowns and interesting events and experiences back home. We also share our dreams and opinions. Other topics cover life skills, food, music and one another’s feelings too. No one will ever feel lonely @ Shelton for lovely roommates. We go sightseeing and shopping together, forging great friendship – such immense treasures!

Besides, there are Immersion Program students from Korea and Thailand. We get to exchange knowledge and cultures of our various countries in Asia Pacific. We also play sports such as badminton after school. It is good to exercise; and not study all the time. There are other interesting activities too.

The staffs @ Shelton are kind, friendly and helpful. If there is anyone with a problem, they will be more than glad to help. If there is a suggestion to make, they will be ever ready to take. They are just like a big family! I hope you will enjoy staying in Singapore, and especially @ Shelton.

I can still remember my rst day coming to Shelton. Everything looked strange to me – the new friends and teachers, and a new environment full of mystery and unpredictability. However, there was one thing that I was denitely certain – I came here to study and ght for my life! Nothing could wipe off my ambition.

Time passes by in the blink of an eye. It has been seven months since my rst day in Singapore. When I look back at those early days that I rst started out at Shelton, a smile automatically comes to my face. It is such an unforgettable experience for me. The school is well-organized with certain set guidelines, principles and values like attendance, punctuality, respect and cleanliness which greatly inuence our performance in life. I follow them faithfully and do my duties diligently as the role of an obedient and royal student with good behaviour. Knowledge is the key to success and so I take pride and pleasure in learning new skills, and to strive to do better each day. Speaking of this, I really appreciate my parents’ love and sacrice for me. I never go against their wishes and high expectations. I believe they are proud of me as I always focus on my goal, and work harder for hard work pays off.

I am grateful to our headmaster Mr. Gerad, and teacher Ms. Sareena who gives me lots of encouragement and support. She is a good teacher with great patience and tries to lead us on the right path. She is very popular among us. I also enjoy certain rights and privileges for good behaviour. I have ample time to also enjoy the company of my friends and camaraderie. We help each other and have fun together. Thanks to them for I do not feel lonely although I stay far away from my family.

Since Shelton is an international school, I get to meet people from many countries. It provides me a wide stage for networking. Just recently, Shelton welcomed many Thai students to our Immersion Program. We appreciate their exotic and traditional performances and we also had the opportunity to showcase our cultures. It offers many opportunities for us to broaden our horizons and open our mind to the world.

There is one invaluable experience that I cannot forget. It was when I took part in the President Walk as a volunteer together with some friends and our teacher guide. We went to the Garden by the Bay to take care of the visitors. The sun bullied us like a bad guy and almost melted us! After the training, we had to wait for the event to start. I was not until 7 p.m. that our work began. I was asked to serve food to the VIPs, which I did for the rst time in my life. Everything was so exciting and I felt really honoured to contribute my help. The event went on smoothly and I even took a photo with the CEOs from France – what a meaningful experience!

The school teaches us many things. It provides me invaluable memories that will carry me through a lifetime. I believe I can recount such lovely occasions again.

What a Canoe Experience!

The rst canoe experience is awesome! I was so excited to see the fantastic view of nature. It was on Saturday, 1st of March. I arrived at MacRitchie Reservoir at 2 p.m. and the weather was just excellent.

I just couldn’t imagine myself paddling a canoe. Then I saw a lot of canoes and professional paddlers. We had to carry our own boats to the reservoir - a canoe for two.

It’s hard to get into the vessel as a rst timer because we had no sense of balance yet. Someone needs to hold the canoe for us so that we can board it. But once we got into it, it’s as easy as ABC.

My partner Tommy and I had to paddle at the same time to balance the canoe – the great importance of teamwork. Our expedition lasted for an hour but for us it was somewhat like only a minute because we enjoyed it SO much. What great fun and experience!

In our school we have various extra curricular activities such as, the Badminton Club, the Campus Choir and so on. Among all of them, my favorite activity is the Culinary Club where I experienced for the rst time, how to make a pizza by myself on March 7th which turned out to be a really unforgettable, good and memorable day for me.

Before the students came downstairs to the cooking room, Ms. Yen, who is our teacher, had already prepared all the ingredients necessary for the pizza baking class. There was a remark from Ms. Yen that left an impression on me, that is: ‘Please be happy when you cook, so that the food will be more delicious.’ Cool…

Ms. Yen was so patient in instructing us step by step the whole process and procedure, and we followed all the requirements and instructions. Actually it was not more difcult than I had thought, and it was a really happy time for us.

Everyone was so excited and speechless when the pizzas were done. For me, upon seeing my pizza, the description of my emotion was beyond what words could describe. The funniest part during the pizza making session was when all the girls found themselves lacking enough strength to knead the dough - some of us had to stand up and even jump up and down just to press the bread.

Now there is one thing which makes me super happy, that is, having lots of my friends wanting to get a taste of my pizza until in the end, I just had a taste of a very tiny piece of my masterpiece.

I am truly looking forward to the next cooking course.

My name is Phuong. I am a student of Shelton College International. I have joined so many activities of the school but I found the pizza class to be one of my favourite activities.

The class had about sixteen students. Our teacher, Mrs. Yen Lim, taught us how to make a pizza and we followed her instructions step by step. Everyone tried to do their best to produce a good, tasteful and presentable pizza. So we added some extra ingredients to create our own unique pizzas. After baking was done, we took photos together with much joy, and showed off our pizza to our friends.

Our bread smelled as good and delicious as that of Pizza Hut. That was a really wonderful weekend.

The class was so interesting and I have learned a lot. Ms. Yen not only taught us how to make pizzas but she also taught us how to be a good wife or husband in the future. I am so happy to have joined this class. Thank you, Teacher Yen and Shelton College International. I am looking forward to our next extra curricular classes.

A Learning Journeyto Gardenia Factory

by Rick Guo Xuan Rui, FCE

Under the guided tour of the teachers yesterday, we visited a bread factory. We set off from school by bus and it took about 30 minutes to reach the factory. When we arrived at the bread factory, I learnt that it is very famous in Singapore – even in Southeast Asia, because it has a good history for many years. This bread factory’s name is Gardenia. We were rst ushered into the product exhibition hall. A lady staff introduced all the bread products to us. She also explained the production process of bread making.

Of course, if we just listen to such talk, we will not be able to understand the whole thing. So another staff took us to actually visit the production workshop. Upon entry into the production workshop, a gust of hot air came head-on with a mixed aroma of bread. We saw a huge production work space. We walked upstairs, and there were so many workers at work. Many of us have never seen such machines in our life. They are three stories high! The staff patiently gave us the detailed functions of the various machines. She told us that the hot air that comes out of furnace is needed for the fermentation of the dough. We also saw some workers in the baking section. And some other staff responsible for packaging. Although the whole process is pretty complicated, all the sections are in good order.

After the visit, we went to the locker room. A staff prepared freshly baked soft and delicious rolls for us. After that, we said thank you to the staff and then left the bread factory.

From this visit, I learned a lot of things. First I saw that, although there are machines to help the process, every piece of bread is done by hard work. So, I am reminded that I must not waste food. Second I saw that the bread making process is a very, very complex one. So every piece of bread is produced out of the efforts of everyone. So I actually learnt the importance of team work - to cooperate from one line to another. And not only cooperation but that each line always creates something better!

That was an interesting day.

I went to a bread factory with my classmates last week. Gardenia is a wonderful and interesting factory. Besides, it is a place of learning for me.

Our college teachers led us into a room where the Gardenia staff gave a presentation on bread production. The staff introduced many kinds of bread like, full-milk bread, white bread, chocolate bread and so on.

Next, we went to the actual factory itself. That was my very rst time I stepped into a factory. The minute we entered the huge hall, we could feel the heat inside. Suddenly it was just so hot. Yet the workers still work very hard inside. Although the factory is very modern but there is no air-conditioning. It is because they need very high temperature to bake the bread before the cooling process. Although the machines are automatic, the factory still needs workers to check every piece or loaf of bread. They need to transport the bread at 4:00 a.m. to guarantee the freshness of the bread every day.

Gardenia is the oldest bread factory in Singapore. It supplies bread to most parts of the island state.

I can imagine how difcult and tiring to make just a loaf of bread, although it is just something small. Singapore is a small island state, and so everything made in this country is important and precious. We should save and cherish every piece. Do not waste food.

Resources in the world are dwindling. For the sake of our children, we should begin to protect these resources, starting from food, and especially from the little piece of bread in our hands.

A LearningJourney to Tiger Brewery

We had an interesting visit to the world famous Tiger Brewery recently. There were more than 50 students and teachers who visited the factory. Actually it was my rst time going to such a place, and I was deeply impressed by what I experienced there.

First, we went to the visitor centre where a team of professional staff received us and put us on a guided tour through each step of the process of beer production. They gave us a brief introduction about Tiger’s illustrious history and heritage. From there we proceeded to the Brew House. They showed us the basic ingredients used for the making of beer and the ve essential processes of beer production. A perfect beer must go through a long and complex cycle.

Later, we went to the packaging gallery where a video presentation was shown. It started with packing beer into bottles or cans. There was a guy actually giving a beer-tapping demonstration and he even opened the opportunity for anyone interested enough to try and tap the beer. I quickly grasped the chance and I was literally on top of the world when I went tapping the nice cold beer all by myself.

The highlight of the tour is at the Tiger Tavern where rich decorations adorned in wood and leather exude a classic charm. I felt totally relaxed and extremely comfortable. There were many glasses of free beer and coke handed to the contingent…

BUT as the proverb goes: Give strong drink to him that is ready to perish. So, it is good to warn the students to NOT start with that rst drop before it grips a stronghold on him and the poor young life lost in no time.

I'm a teacher in charge of the students from Suankularb Witayalai in Thonburi, Thailand. We travel to Singapore on a study tour for 9 days. During our stay @ Shelton College International hostel, we experience the most wonderful time together. This college is quite small when compared to other schools in Thailand. But the hearts of the teachers here are very big. They are very kind, friendly and professional in teaching English.

English learning activities here come in a variety and are very meaningful for my students because they get the opportunities to communicate with international students. They like playing the games and speaking activities. Even though our students are very shy and not good in English, they still try to talk with their news friends. The teachers at Shelton not only teach them English but also thinking and life skills for example, how to think, how to solve problems and how to work with one another. It is such an invaluable experience for them. My students also hope to come back to visit SCI again!

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Western Visayas part of the Philippines in October of last year. A lot of people were killed.

When I read about this sad news in the newspaper, my heart just sank heavily. That very sudden disaster that struck the Philippines brought many painful losses. Disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis not only destroy the living environment but also cause lives to be lost, including the lives of our loved-ones. In moments like these, how could our hearts stay unaffected? But we live a thousand miles away and so we could not do much either. Yet, we still want to do something to help out, no matter how little.

And so, the teachers and students of Shelton College International tried to show our love to the victims by contributing some cash donations. We do not have much money as we are only students but with whatever small amount, we hope that we will be able to show our concern for the children who have lost everything.

No country can stand alone by itself and therefore we should help one another. After all, love knows no bounds. It is during such difcult times that we should unite together as one in order to overcome these difculties. We should be helpful. As long as people around the world continue to share a little love, we will all have innite strength.

These are all the reasons why we want to help the Filipinos. We also prayed for them because we wanted them to cheer up through the help and encouragement of fellow human beings from all over the world. We continue to pray and hope that soon they will be able to rebuild their beautiful homes.

New temporary classrooms for the calamity victims in Napo, Bohol, Philippinesby: Joan V Llanos, DODT, CODA ‘The good that you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.’ - Mother Teresa

It’s been over a hundred days since the killer quake hit the island of Bohol, the beautiful home of the world’s smallest primate – tarsier, and the landmark that once bore the amazing chocolate hills.

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the province one unsuspecting morning when Boholanos went about their daily lives like it was any other ordinary day. Killing 222 people and rendering 14,500 homes, markets, churches, schools, and ofces totally damaged, it was said to be the deadliest earthquake that hit the Philippines in 23 years*.

As if nature’s wrath was not enough that day, some three weeks after the quake, Super Typhoon Haiyan struck the region. Barely missing Bohol, it sent some 40,000 Boholanos, who, at that time, were still taking shelter in make shift homes and evacuation centres*.

Struggling to pick up their lives from the rubbles of the devastation, Boholanos have been very grateful recipients to the outpouring of kind assistance coming from all over the globe, including Singapore. With the initiative of concerned Boholano friends now based here in Singapore, the Help Bohol project was launched in order to gather provision, in kind or in cash, for the benet of the victims of the duo calamities.

With the generosity of Singaporean friends, including the management, colleagues and some students from Shelton College International, the Help Bohol project was able to successfully build four (4) temporary classrooms in Napo, one of the hardest hit areas in Bohol. Napo’s primary school was badly damaged by the quake, rendering the school totally off-limits due to the huge sink holes. Pupils were relegated to having their lessons under the shade of trees and tents which, during rainy days, often left them standing on their seats to avoid the rising puddle of water or sweating and panting for breath when the sun is relentlessly shining. The benevolence of everyone who extended selessly their hands, both in charity and in prayer, meant so much to those pupils, teachers, and parents alike, who welcomed the help with so much gratefulness and warmth.

As Help Bohol was not a dole-out project, the organizers linked up with the teachers and parents of Napo Elementary School through their Parents-Teachers Association. With eagerness, the fathers volunteered to build the temporary classrooms with their own bare hands as a sign of support and gratitude, for the welfare of their own kids.

As of this writing, they are now in the completion stage of the project. Formal hand-over of the nished classrooms will be on 30 March 2014.

‘Thank you’ may not be enough to express these Boholanos’ tremendous joy for this gift of genuine help and concern from across the globe. But denitely, the Invisible Hand that orchestrated all these things to be made possible, will reward those who allowed themselves to be a channel of His loving grace.

Thank you very much, Shelton management, faculty, staff, and students! Your generosity has gone a long way, indeed!

Resident FeaturesEssay of the Month: How to Realize our Dreams

For the students, we all should have our own dreams. Once we have dreams, we should work hard, and try our best to reach our goals. In fact, this is the real reason why we have to study hard.

Actually, there are lots of ways to study better. The starting point is to be attentive in class as it is the most effective way of learning and understanding. Students should also be consistent in doing their homework and work steadily throughout the year; and not wait for examinations period.

Yet, another step is to form study groups with other students. This will provide an opportunity for students to learn from one another. Students should also pay attention to subjects which they are weak in. We should concentrate on our text books and read them carefully. Additionally, we should not only redo sample questions, but also some extra homework.

Last but not least, many students make the mistake of putting off revision until the last minute. Revision should be done regularly, so that assignments do not pile up until it is too much to handle at the time of examinations. Consistent revision helps to build condence. Condent students tend to do well in examinations.

Let us study hard and try our best to reach our goals. Nothing is impossible!

Luo Jia Yi KayDiploma in Travel Tourism & HospitalityClass of 2013Completed my internship in Feb 2014

Internships@ Raffles Hotel, Singapore

Hi everyone. I am Luo Jia Yi, Kay for short. I am presently 23 yrs old and I am a cheerful and easy going girl. I love to watch movies. I come from China and I have been studying in Singapore for the past couple of years.

Upon completion of my senior high school in China, I decided to go overseas to further my studies as I believe it will be a great help to my English. Under the recommendation of my Dad, I decided to enrol at Shelton College International, starting with a Diploma course.

Shelton is a great school and I enjoyed studying there as I gained lots of knowledge. After completing my Diploma course, I embarked on my Advanced Diploma course, and upon completion of that course, I decided to go for an internship as I had heard great stories from my friends.

After completing the 5th module, I approached the internship department and registered myself. With their help, I was soon selected by Rafes Hotel, one of the top hotels in Singapore. I was over the moon!

During the time spent at Rafes, I was kept busy but it was fun. I got to learn a lot and my fellow colleagues were very accommodating too! The fun time together and the learning journey that we went through, are hard to describe but the learning journey will be what I will treasure and look back with fond memories!

In the six months while I was working at Rafes, I was still in constant contact with my school as I needed to submit monthly reports too. Frequent phone calls and text messages were other ways to keep in contact with my school. It is heartening to know that we were not being forgotten by Shelton, a place where I called home for the past few years in Singapore.

Soon, six months passed by quickly as I completed my internship. Now, it is time for me to bid farewell. I am thankful to Shelton for giving me this golden opportunity, and to Rafes for giving me the chance to be part of them.

After my internship, I will be going to work at Edith-United International as a customer service executive, and a S-pass holder. It is with the knowledge which I have acquired at Shelton and Rafes that allows me to continue my plan to work in Singapore.

Ni Luh Putu Risa AndariDiploma in Travel Tourism & HospitalityClass of February 2014

Internships@ Raffles Hotel, Singapore

My name is Ni Luh Putu Risa Andari and I come from Bali, Indonesia. I studied Food and Beverages Management at STP Nusa Dua Bali and Human Resources Management and Travel and Tourism at Shelton College International in Singapore. I worked at Rafes Hotel Singapore in the Culinary (Cold Kitchen) department.

Because I have never worked before, I was really nervous and confused at my internship. But the environment and the people at my work place were really kind to me. I am so lucky to have met such people who really care about me. They taught me a lot and helped me if I did something wrong or if I did not know any thing. Not only would the supervisor teach me, but other staff in the kitchen and other kitchen would help me too. I learned a lot there.

One important thing that I learned from this internship is that work is all about team work and relationships. Even if someone can cook very well but his / her relationship with other staff is not good, it will not go well because we cannot serve any food with that only one person. In the kitchen I had to work in many sections. So, if section A was very busy but section B was not really busy, then we would help section A. We must help one another. At my work place, the environment was very conducive and the people were really kind to me, and so I felt motivated and happy to work.

The teachers at Shelton taught us very well because if we did not know anything, they would further explain until we understood the lesson. And they gave us a lot of examples to allow us to learn and these made us more active and think about what is happening in this country.

They all gave the mock questions about interviews so we could practice before interviews and they checked our grooming too.

During internships they will ask me to do monthly reports to make sure all is ne. For me, I think they do that because they want to understand how the students feel at work, whether they are okay with that internship, whether they are happy doing that internship and to ensure students learn something from the internship. Also, they do that to build relationships between students, his/her supervisor, and people in workplace. The staffs @ Shelton really take care of us. They will ask what is happening when we are working, if someone is not alright with their workplace they try to change the workplace, if we are homesick they try to make us happy, sometimes they take us somewhere nice to hang out.

My plan after nishing my internship is to continue my studies in my country because I’m still studying. So I can share my experience here with my friends and tell what I’ve learned in my workplace.

My advice to others is: do not stop learning and do not be lazy. If you are lazy, you will waste your time and you will miss so many things. You will regret it. If you work hard now you might be sad and tired; but after that you will be happy and have no regrets because remember, what you want is in front of you and is achievable if you work hard.
