Bringing pride to the country, Shell Retail Philippines bagged three out of five most coveted awards in the 9th Smiling Stars event held in Paris, France and a prestigious regional award brought home by one of our site staff. Behind the success of our colleagues is a story of perseverance and dedication that is worth sharing, to inspire all of us and drive up our commitment and passion for excellence by being the best that we can be in our respective roles as part of the Shell community and pursue the Shell Retail vision of becoming the best fuels retailer in the world. Let us also take this opportunity to thank and congratulate our General Manager, Oying Yam, for his inspired leadership and relentless support in empowering each member of our team to achieve goals and make milestones.

Shell’s high regard for safety makes our

MY DEAREST RETAILERSAND COLLEAGUES,

operations a benchmark for excellence. Day in and day out, we are conscious on how we carry out our activities to ensure that everything is in accordance with Shell’s safety principles. As safety is integral to our operations, we are sharing with you our Safety Day celebration story to remind us of the reason why we all should observe safety and who we are doing it for.

In my 18 years of working with Shell, I have been a witness to the many successes that Shell Philippines has achieved. I consider myself lucky for being part of the Shell family, celebrating more than a century of robust business, seeing the company hurdle the challenges to make each year of doing business a milestone year, and for being part of a team which see opportunities despite a stormy business climate and whose drive for excellence cannot be withered by obstacles.

The stories in this second issue of PROFILES show who we are as a team --- a team of winners whose determination is beyond compare and whose aspiration is to make Shell accomplish more remarkable milestones towards the next century.

THE SHELL FUELSAVE STORY:CONQUERING MORE MILES ON THE ROAD

iming to conquer more miles with less fuel? Paired with good

driving behaviours, your best option to keep your car running smoothly and efficiently is here, Shell FuelSave – regular priced fuels designed to last longer.

Available in 23 countries, Shell FuelSave Gasoline and Diesel contain active efficiency ingredients and are designed to improve energy efficiency from the very first tank.

With over 100 years experience in creating some of the world’s most advanced fuels, Shell designed Shell FuelSave fuels to help motorists get to where they need and give them savings on their fuel cost.

FACT OR FICTIONA study released by Edelman Berland in December 2014 uncovers the extraordinary lengths Filipinos are willing to go to in order to save fuel and cut their driving costs. The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction

report, which analyses the driving behaviours of 1,000 Filipino drivers aged 18 to 40, reveals that while 92% see being fuel efficient as important, but 75% admit they don’t know how.

What’s even more interesting is that more than half or 53% of the drivers surveyed say they feel anxious

trying to decide how best to save fuel, leading many to believe in a collection of absurd fuel saving myths.

The research shows 80% of drivers believe warming up their engine before setting off will make them

more fuel efficient, while 57% think filling up at night does the same trick. Shockingly, nearly half or 45% even believe ‘burping’ their cars to release air pockets in the tank will help them save fuel. Unfortunately for the majority of the country’s driving population, none of these fuel efficiency myth help in reducing fuel costs.

Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation Vice President for Retail Anthony Lawrence Yam commented, “The Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report shows just how important saving fuel has become to motorists, along with the incredible ways they try to be more fuel efficient. Some of the

Page 6: Shell profiles issue 2 2015

beliefs revealed through the study were actually wasting fuel rather than helping to conserve it.”

To help drivers differentiate fact from fiction, Shell aims to turn myth followers into fuel efficiency pros by encouraging drivers to use Shell FuelSave fuels that are scientifically designed to last longer and by demonstrating more effective ways to drive smartly.

The report also reveals that the confusion on the road is in stark contrast to what goes on inside Filipino homes, where Filipinos conserve energy by limiting their electrical use but not their fuel consumption.

Indeed, while 88% of people say they frequently turn off the lights to save energy when leaving the house, only 4 in 10 or 42% frequently remove excess weight from their boot or backseat to make their vehicles lighter and effectively helping drivers to save on fuel.

A CHALLENGE FOR FUEL EFFICIENCYA prelude to 2015 Shell Eco-marathon Asia was the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Driving Challenge held last February 11 where television personality Bianca Gonzalez was crowned as Shell FuelSave Celebrity Driver of the Year for the second year. She drove a 130 kilometre route together with brilliant young minds to discover which driving practices are proven to help save fuel.

Gonzalez faced the challenge from select media representatives who attempted to outwit their opponents

on a road trip from Manila to Subic learning the difference between fuel efficiency facts and myths as they go through pit stops with challenges along the route.

Inspired by the success of the celebrity driving challenge, a challenge among Shell staff was held where one representative per business unit was chosen to act as ‘ambassador” for fuel efficiency and was in charge of recruiting team members.

Three teams with four members from Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. (SPEX), Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation (PSPC) and Shell Business Operations (SBO) went head to head in a 218-km drive from Makati to Batangas and back, which tested their wits and driving practices. The whole-day activity was officially kicked off with a briefing of the teams, followed by their initial top-up and challenge in the first pit stop. The three team challengers immediately set out for their long, challenge-filled drive, keeping in mind lessons on fuel efficiency. Approaching the halfway point, they joined a small forum wherein Shell Fuels Scientist Mae Ascan, shared the significance of shifting to fuel saving practices, and disproved the common beliefs shared among drivers.

The 218-km drive concluded with the announcement of winners. Team White SPEX came in third with a total of 23 points. Clinching second place was Team Green PSPC by garnering 55 points. Lastly, Team

Red SBO was declared champion by besting the competing teams with a total of 73 points.

MAKING A CHOICEMaking the right choice is always difficult when faced with countless decisions each day, but Shell makes it easier for motorists to make fuel efficient decisions with Shell FuelSave.

Driving on the road becomes easier for the motorists as they can easily pick out Shell FuelSave from among many choices as it offers value for money because it is designed to last longer, coupled with proper driving habits that help motorists accomplish more each day.

“We at Shell want to educate drivers on how they can make their fuel last longer,” said Yam. “We have shared countless tips on how to be more fuel efficient, but Filipinos always think of ingenious ways on their own.”

“The Driving Challenge allows our participants to experience Shell FuelSave, and the Shell FuelSave Fact or Fiction Report shows Filipino motorists what they should and should not do when it comes to being more fuel efficient,” Yam added.

All motorists can be more fuel efficient by driving smarter and use a fuel whose quality and efficiency they cannot doubt such as Shell FuelSave – a regular priced fuel designed to last longer.

With Shell FuelSave, motorists make the right choice to make their experience on the road better each day.

MAKING SAFETY AN EVERYDAY HABIT

PROFILES I PAGE 7

afety Day is a big day not only for Shell Retail but for the entire

Shell Company that it called for a celebration!

All over in the global Shell operations, Safety Day on its ninth year of celebration was held on May 6, 2015. Anchored on the vision of Goal Zero which is No Harm and No Leaks, this year’s theme was “Achieving Goal Zero… Because We Care”.

Safety Day is held annually where Shell employees and contractors gather to show support and strengthen the company’s safety culture. It is important for Shell to make its frontline people demonstrate strong awareness on safety, thus, several activities were lined up for members of the Shell Retail Philippines to equip them with knowledge on safety and encourage them to make each day safe for themselves and their families.

Promoting safety started a week early for the Shell Retail team. They were encouraged to make their own pledge for safety and discuss their personal pledges with other team members. The activity underscored the value of practicing safety at all times as well as making each one feel positive about observing safety.

Shell Retail Philippines team has shown that it is always ready to tackle any emergencies

and whose safety awareness makes them good ambassadors for promoting safety

as a daily habit.

With personal safety pledge as prelude to Safety Day, Retail team members had realised a meaningful engagement which strengthen their competence on Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) as well as instilled the value of safety among participants. A defensive driving seminar was conducted in Shell Pandacan to instill safe driving habits and improve awareness of the risks and hazards in different

driving conditions. To promote household safety, resource persons were invited to conduct sessions where various security risks inside and outside of homes were discussed and proper handling of emergency situations were taught. These two programmes were attended by Retail staff, their drivers and household helps, indeed a good example of bringing safety into your very home.

Equipped with sound knowledge on safety, Retail staff went out to selected Retail service stations to encourage motorists to make safety a part of their daily living. While gassing up, Shell staff engage Shell customers to make a safety pledge,

and make it an opportunity to educate and influence customers to always observe safety at all times.

One engaging activity conducted at Shell service stations was the My Safety for My Family Program. Attended by site staff with their respective families, the activity did not only address personal safety, it also highlighted care for the family with valuable information on safety

coming from resource persons from the Philippine National Police, Red Cross, and the Fire Department. The activity aimed to promote Shell’s strong safety culture to family members of on-site staff. Topics discussed during the activity were household security, robbery prevention, fire prevention and emergency response for fire, and basic first aid.

All throughout the month of May, drills were conducted at retail sites to assess readiness for worst case scenarios, determine if current emergency response is still relevant, and find out if there is adequate equipment for containment. Haulers were also tested to assess their

preparedness and gauged the level of commitment of external parties (fire fighters, PNP, Paramedics) in responding to a site emergency.

With these activities conducted to reinforce the value of safety, the Shell Retail Philippines team has shown that it is always ready to tackle any emergencies and whose safety awareness makes them good ambassadors for promoting safety as a daily habit.

THE PANDACAN IN OUR MIND:WHAT IT STOOD FOR IN OUR LIVES

teps are now underway for the closure of Pandacan Installation

including the Luboil Blending and Filling Plants. This is in compliance with the Supreme Court order and the ensuing resolution for the relocation of the facilities.

At this stage, it is commendable that Shell’s business continuity plan (BCP) has been kicked in and now fully operational with laudable cooperation from all stakeholders. Despite the impending closure, the retail outlets and B2B customers of Shell do not feel at all any hiccups in supply which remains stable and sustainable. Pandacan is historic and iconic within the annals of Shell history. More than 100 years ago, on January 19, 1914 to be exact, Shell Pandacan Installation came into being and became the hub of the company’s operations in Metro Manila and the neighboring provinces.

The Pandacan Installation has become the symbol of Shell’s commitment to operational competence, Health,

APSDI

Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE), industrial peace or management-labor cooperation and corporate social responsibility which are admired and recognized by prestigious award giving organizations here and abroad. It managed to insulate itself from the vagaries of both national and local politics despite its location of being close to the seat of power. In the midst of political changes, Shell deftly managed to be as professional and transparent as one can be in conformance with its core values. These facts are truly unremitting. To many of us, including myself, Pandacan’s closure is both personal and emotional. It has shaped a great part of our careers while in Shell. We have learned to defend our positions, our principles - fought if necessary, but we also learned to be humble and grounded.

The myriad operational aspects and responsibilities related to managing a huge installation like Pandacan made us compleat and certainly confident.

BY TERRY VALLADORES

S The facility has withstood challenges and contributed significantly to the growth of Shell business in the country. And for all its accomplishments, the Pandacan facility is closing down and is nonetheless sad.

More than seeing its physicality diminished, our hearts would bleed for those who will be directly affected by its closure - those whose employment are affected and will consequently deal with some financial dislocations.

Like so many things happening in our lives, these are temporary storms for those impacted by the closure will face with courage and hurdle triumphantly towards a brighter and promising tomorrow. As one said: “Happiness is not the absence of problems, it is the strength and ability with which we deal with them.” We will all be saddened with the closure of Pandacan because it has become a good part of our existence, but it will definitely remain as pantheon in our memories.
