Message from the Principal
Our thoughts are with the Minnamurra and Kiama community after the tragic passing of a student over the long weekend. If you or a loved one were affected by this news I encourage you to seek support through the many networks available. These include Lifeline (131114), Headspace, and Kids Helpline (1800551800).
Reports
Twice a year, schools are required to report on student achievement against syllabus standards. Each year, we have parents question grading for students as this has changed since many of us went to school.
The A to E grade scale summarises the standard (or quality) of achievement associated with each grade. The scale describes: • the depth of knowledge and understanding and • the range of skills that students working at that standard typically show.
Grades are given for individual achievement. Students will get the grade that best matches the standard of their achievement. Teachers are not limited to set numbers of each grade within their class or school. Grades are one aspect of school reporting to parents. A ‘C’ grade indicates that the student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content. This is where we expect students to be achieving.
If you have any questions regarding assessment and reporting, please make an appointment with the office to see the classroom teacher.
Communication with teachers
Thank you to all the parents that treat teachers with respect and dignity. We always have your child/children’s best interest at heart. We encourage all parents to make appointments through the office for meetings regarding any concerns you may have. It has been great to see how many parents have respected the new guidelines established with communication processes with see-saw. On behalf of the teachers, thank you!!!!
Safety of students
Please make sure that your child is aware of their personal safety while out in the community. When out and about, you need to always take care and be aware of strangers. With the help of your friends, you can together be stranger danger safe.

Why not create a 'Buddy System'? Just like the two of us, we help each other whenever
we are out. We alert each other to danger, and we make sure we always stay together -
no walking off alone or talking to strangers!
Sport news
Congratulations to Indyana on her selection in the NSW Soccer team that will compete in Canberra later this year. This is a huge effort and we are so proud of her achievement. There are raffle tickets for sale in the office for $5 to help fund the cost of this experience.
Mr Janssens is taking credit for another victory for our school soccer team. The boys beat Shell Harbour (7-0) and will now play the winner of Kiama and Nowra to progress to the next level.
The girls also won their last game 9-0 against Bowral. Their next match will be against the winner of Minnamurra and Jamberoo.
We wish both teams the best of luck.
Playground update
We have moved another step forward with the playground program! We have a concept map we can share with the community. The playground committee have looked and will provide feedback to the designers. If you have any additional feedback, please email to [email protected]
All student members of the playground committee will receive their badges during the Week 10 whole school assembly.

Earn and Learn Earn and Learn is back at all Woolworth stores. For every $10 you spend in a Woolworths store you will get an Earn & Learn sticker. You may place your stickers in the box provided at Woolworths Shell Cove or children may return them to Earn and Learn box located in the school office. This programme runs until 25 June 2019.
The more stickers we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 10,000 educational resources, including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much more!
We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program.
School Spelling Bee
Shell Cove Public School will be entering selected students from Stage 2 and 3 in the Premiers Spelling Bee, 2019. Classes will conduct heats to determine 2 finalists who will then compete in our school final, which will be held on Monday 24th June 2019 in our school hall from 11.30am.
Students will be competing under the same conditions as expected at the regional finals, which will be held from 2nd to 13th September at local venues. The State final will be held on the 8th November at the ABC Centre, Sydney.
It is a good idea for students to be exposed to and practice a range of spelling words from various contexts. Sample word lists are available on the arts unit website using the following web address
https://www.artsunit.nsw.edu.au/premiers-spelling-bee
Word categories include: the arts, food and nutrition, plants and animals, science and technology as well as general lists.
All children will be given the opportunity to compete in their class heat, which will be conducted the week prior to the school final.
