A Note From Our Chief Executive The health and well-being of our population is a measure of our success as a society. As a local authority we influence physical and mental wellbeing through social inclusion events, recreation activities, library services, housing supply, community infrastructure and financial supports. Kildare Local Authority is very conscious of its role in this regard and continues to promote the well being of our citizens as a priority objective of service delivery.

Here in Kildare Local Authority we believe that the Shelf Help programme presents a great opportunity for Kildare Library Service and its partner agencies to raise awareness of the many mental health and addiction issues affecting our citizens and the support services and facilities available.

The Shelf Help collection is available to borrow from any of our libraries. In addition the free and accessible events are delivered by our experienced professional partners from the Health Service Executive, South West Regional Drug & Alcohol Task Force and Mental Health Ireland. I am sure our citizens will benefit from these resources and help to make 2016 a year of positive health and well-being.

Peter CareyChief Executive, Kildare County Council

The theme for Kildare County Library Shelf Help Programme for 2016 is Five Ways to Well-being, well-being defined as feeling good and functioning well, covering mental and physical health. Our series of talks, workshops and events will cover the 5 themes as follows:

Connect...With the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. At home, work, school or in your local community. Think of these as the cornerstones of your life and invest time in developing them. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day.

Be Active...Go for a walk or run. Step outside. Cycle. Play a game, Garden. Dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness.

Take Notice...Be curious. Catch sight of the beautiful. Remark on the unusual. Notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

Keep Learning...Try something new. Rediscover an old interest. Sign up for that course. Take a different responsibility at work. Fix a bike. Learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun.

Give...Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger. Thank someone. Smile. Volunteer your time. Join a community group. Look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.

“Teachín de Dhóchas”

Supporting Family members living with alcohol & other drug problems

Situated in the village of Kill, Teachín de Dhóchas (Cottage of Hope) is a family support, information and resource centre for family members, who have a loved one with alcohol or other drug problems.

The goal of Teachín de Dhóchas is to provide a confidential, safe, friendly, non-judgemental service for those affected by a loved one’s alcohol or other drug problem.

No individual or family should have to live with the stress and isolation that alcohol or other drug use can bring.

At Teachín de Dhóchas family members are given support and encouragement from other family members/facilitators and members have reported the experience with feelings of acceptance, encouragement and understanding.

What we Offer:5-Step MethodThe 5-Step method is a brief psychosocial intervention to support family members in their own right who have a close relative with an alcohol or drug problem. The 5-Step Method has shown a reduction in the strain experienced by family members concerned and affected by a relative in their family who has developed a serious alcohol or drug problem. These gains have sometimes had a knock-on effect on other family members including both children in the family and the drug or alcohol using relative.

CounsellingCounselling service is also provided by appointment or referral.Holistics (ITEC, IED Certified)Types of holistics available:Swedish, holistic, hand, Indian and foot massage, reflexology, meditation and breathing exercises.

Be Active...Fitline: An Introduction with Richard Farrell

Fitline is a free telephone service supporting and encouraging older people to become active and involved in their communities. Fitline has team of mentors based in Maynooth Library who are in contact with participants in County Kildare and surrounding areas on a regular basis.

Fitline is part of the Go for Life programme and is an Age and Opportunity initiative funded by Sport Ireland. The Go for Life Programme combines awareness raising activities with practical skills delivery.

Among the targets under the recently launched Healthy Ireland Get Ireland Active - National Physical Activity Plan for Ireland is a 1% increase per annum in the number of older adults undertaking at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week and a decrease of 0.5 % per annum in the proportion of older adults who do not take any weekly physical activity.

Fitline co-ordinator, Richard Farrell, will host an introductory talk on the programme, outlining how it works and how you can engage with and benefit from this locally based support network as you undertake or develop your fitness routine.

Mindful Walking: A Talk with Hugh O’Donovan

Mindful Walking is about slowing down to bring a deliberate, non-judgemental, curious focus of attention to the present moment in movement. Bringing together the concept of mindfulness along with the three paths of change for a better life – talking, meditation and movement – Mindful Walking shows us how we can better manage the internal and external distractions that clog our path to mental happiness, while also improving our physical well-being. Mindful Walking brings physical and emotional fitness together.

With simple exercises on how to incorporate mindful walking into our everyday lives: from walking up the stairs to walking in the park or climbing a mountain, Mindful Walking is for everyone – seasoned walkers, city amblers or people learning to walk again after illness. There are only two rules to Mindful Walking. SHOW UP and SLOW DOWN.

Hugh O’Donovan is a Registered Psychologist (Work / Organisational), Performance Coach and former Army Officer. As well as being Principal of Hugh O’Donovan and Associates, (www.hoda.ie) Hugh has a passionate interest in and commitment to applying the best practice, evidence based insights of psychology (positive), coaching psychology and contemplative neuroscience, in order to enhance the life experience, work performance and well-being of individuals, groups and organisations.

Tai Chi Gatheringwith Ross Cousens

A session with Ross Cousens introducing the principles of Tai Chi, a movement based mind/body system teaching centeredness, stillness within, relaxation, flow and sensitivity. With a little bit of fun.

Ross is one of a number of qualified Master Ding Academy instructors teaching Tai Chi Chuan and Chi Kung in Ireland. He has been training under Master Ding since 1997 and has been assisting Master Ding with classes, seminars and retreats across Europe since 2001.

Ross’ teaching aims to integrate the life affirming principles found within the ancient Chinese practices of Tai Chi and Chi Kung, with the hectic lifestyles that we all lead today.

This fusion of the ancient and modern worlds is attained through the mindful practice of Tai Chi and Chi Kung on a daily basis. This inner discipline results in the much sought after Strong Body and Still Mind, as often described by Tai Chi texts.

Take Notice...Introduction to Mindfulnesswith Dr. Julie Connolly

It seems these days that it is almost impossible to listen to a chat show or read a newspaper or magazine without coming across something about “Mindfulness”. But what is it?

This talk will introduce Mindfulness. It is a basic introduction aimed at those who may be curious about it, but have not completed any formal training in it. However, as there will also be opportunities to practice some short Mindfulness exercises, it may also be of interest to those who have come across it and want to avail of the opportunity to try out some of the exercises.

Dr. Julie Connolly is a Clinical and Counselling Psychologist working with the HSE Primary Care Psychology Service in Kildare. Julie has completed training in Mindfulness and has a strong interest in Mindfulness based approaches. She incorporates it into her therapeutic work with adults and young people as well as practicing mindfulness as part of her personal self-care.

Stress Control Classes

These days we are all experts on stress and it is a common topic for discussion. But what do we do about it?

That is where Stress Control comes in! Stress Control Classes run over six sessions, once per week. It is not a therapy group; it’s a class where we can learn ways to cope with stress. In effect those who attend learn to be their own therapist. People attending are not required to ask questions or share personal information. Those who attended previous classes are always welcome back to top up of focus on new issues.

What is covered in each session?Session 1: What is Stress?Session 2: Controlling your body: relaxation, exercise Session 3: Controlling your thoughts: learn to think your way out of stress Session 4: Controlling your actions: boost self-confidence Session 5: Controlling panic; Controlling sleepSession 6: Controlling your Well-Being; Controlling your future

Attendance at all 6 sessions is desirable.

Who is providing the classes? The class will be delivered by Clinical Psychologists working with the HSE who will assume the role of “teacher” with the aim being to teach skills that are known to work in dealing with stress.
