Cover Art and Design Philosophy
Process stems from the intersection of nature and humans, from the nuances in the meetings of needs. If one listens intently, they can hear what is inherent and essential in a site. The needed design is then illuminated and only as many steps away as the process requires. I approach landscape architecture through this understanding. I am not the designer of the site, but merely the listener. The listener of the process calling to be followed.

Water Rite explores the essential characteristics of water and how its inherent purities allow humans and the environment alike to perform ablutions of dissolution. Located in a 300’ circular field, forty-eight welded steel rods hold hand-sized cloth, mirrors, and bells, and encircle an 8’x8’ mirror sitting flush with the ground. Participants chose objects to cleanse in the golden bowl at the center of the landscape.

The Duck Fountain transforms a eutrophic concrete pool into an ecologically healthy stream. The design process involved collecting sound data, transforming the dissonant sounds into naturally pure sounds, finding materials and forms that produce these sounds, and forming a landscape that moves people melodically through the space.

Nature antedates all of arts and sciences, and without knowledge of nature, the history and development of man is incomprehensible. -John Nolen
