Welcome The Crucible is 40 years old - and the celebrations start here!

Othello, Shakespeare’s psychological thriller brings two mighty actors, Clarke Peters and Dominic West, to the Crucible stage. At Christmas, Stephen Sondheim’s groundbreaking Company will explore the highs and lows of married life with joyful wit and an explosive sassiness.

In the Studio, in a co-production with Eclipse Theatre, we present the European première of the brilliantly funny One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show, whilst with Paines Plough, one of the UK’s pre-eminent new writing companies, we will produce three world premières by three British writers.

November sees the birthday celebrations in full swing with our new People’s Theatre performing on the Crucible stage for the fi rst time.

Meanwhile, the Lyceum offers a dynamic blend of music, dance, comedy and drama including Northern Ballet’s Hamlet, Mr Stink, Season’s Greetings and the devastating Journey’s End.

This is a special time for Sheffi eld Theatres and we hope you’ll join in the celebrations throughout the year.

End of the Rainbowby Peter Quilter

Mon 14 – Sat 19 November

with Tracie Bennett as Judy Garland

London. December 1968, and Judy Garland is about to make her comeback... again. Determined to reclaim her crown as the greatest talent of her generation, she battles with a tornado of drugs, alcohol and a gruelling schedule of exhausting concerts.

Olivier Award-winning Tracie Bennett’s remarkable portrayal of this tough, talented, compelling woman has taken the West End by storm.

This extraordinary production is thrilling, hilarious, moving and tragic and is directed by Tony and Olivier Award-winner Terry Johnson. Featuring a six-piece onstage band, End of the Rainbow includes Garland’s most memorable songs The Man That Got Away, Come Rain Or Come Shine, The Trolley Song and, of course, Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

Dr Marigold and Mr Chops

Tue 29 November – Sat 3 December

with Simon Callow

Simon Callow (Waiting for Godot, Shakespeare in Love) is a virtuoso storyteller and returns to the Lyceum Theatre after The Man From Stratford in 2010 with two one-man plays by Charles Dickens.

In an absorbing theatrical event he tells the stories of Dr Marigold, a travelling salesman who adopts a little deaf and dumb girl and Mr Chops, a freak-show turn who wins the lottery and a place in society. Adapted by Patrick Garland, these masterpieces, which were hugely popular when Dickens himself performed them on his famed reading tours, provide a masterly blend of the comic, bizarre and poignant that is classic Dickens.

‘Callow fi lls the auditorium with his energy and enthusiasm ...this is theatre in its purest and most noble form’ ★★★★★ The Sunday Telegraph

‘Simon Callow performs these two Dickens monologues with enormous gusto, relish and skill…unalloyed Dickensian joy’ ★★★★ The Guardian

The Winter’s Taleby William Shakespeare

Tue 31 January – Sat 4 February

Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale tells the story of a man consumed by an inexplicable jealousy that destroys his family, his kingdom and himself. The greatest playwright writing at the height of his powers, this is poetry in motion.
