SHEFFIELD MAIN STREET REVITALISATION PROJECTCONCEPT DESIGN 2021

ABOUT SHEFFIELD + RESPONSE TO THE BRIEF

NATIVE FLORAPlant life, particularly flowering plants promotes serenityand spiritual wellbeing. For many people, being in natureand interacting with the natural world, brings a sense ofpeace, tranquility, and feelings of connectedness - withself, others and a higher power.

Sheffield - located at the foothills of Mount Roland isablaze with colourful wildflowers in spring. Thebreathtaking diversity of these wildflowers is astounding -mosaics of kaleidoscopic colour paired with naturalarchitecture. Ranging from flowering plants, terrestrialorchids and low-lying shrubs to ferns, mosses and fungi –Sheffield has them all. It is this wild beauty that iscaptured in the works that comprise this proposal.

This concept proposal aims to present engaging, interactive, site-specific and integrated artworks thatexpress the relevance and importance of the naturalworld Sheffield, Kentish and the surrounding areas.

The conceptual framework will theme on flowering plantsthat connect with the local environment as well as thosegrowing in adjacent proximity of the mountains.

The approach is to create triffid-like blooms that have astrange hyper-real appearance and mechanical quality tothem. Curvilinear and brightly coloured floweringsculptural forms burst with a kaleidoscope of colour (seeindicative designs). Colour and form are an extremelyimportant visual aspect of the design providing aestheticvalue to the sculptures but also creating a very desirableoutdoor magnet to attract people to the Main Streetprecinct.

Whilst the design for the artworks are based on realflowers, the designs are not intended to be exact replicasof the original flowers.

APPROACH TO THE SITE‘GATEWAY’ TO MAIN STREET

The brief stated the desire for the signage to “create acultural corridor linking the eastern end of Main Street tothe central business district” as well as “the welcomesignage causing someone to slow or stop and pass sometime in the town”.

When reviewing the artwork opportunities along thestreetscape, it was felt that the biggest impact would beto create a ‘gateway’ to Main Street.

The artwork on the eastern end of Main Street (corner ofClaude Road and Main Street) would have theopportunity to be seen in association to the WelcomeSign - creating greater impact on this corner, increasingthe chances of tourists wanting to ‘turn left’.

APPROACHPART 01 - WELCOME TO SHEFFIELD SIGNAGE

Signage is an artform that has been around for centuries, and like any creative field with a long history, it has its own fads and fashions that come and go withtime. Font, colour, design are vital elements that help refresh entrance ways into townships and cities across the globe so emphasis will be placed on theseelements when designing the Welcome to Sheffield sign.

As the overall concept that we’ve developed for the revitalisation project is about the natural environment, the welcome sign for Sheffield will also be designedin this vein, echoing the contemporary approach used in the historic interpretive signage as well as elements from the public art sculpture.

Building on the notion of “Tasmania’s Outdoor Art Gallery’’, the welcome sign will be an installation of elements clustered in the landscape, brightly colouredto reflect the Town’s numerous murals. Each letter will be created as a geometric rectangular box with the letter raised on low metal pins that are attached tothe front face of the box. On the following sides (front, left-hand side and right-hand side) there will be a floral form that is diecut into the metal (referred todiecut in the drawings). This will subtly link the welcome sign back to the other design elements and sculptural forms of the street revitalisation project.

The main view point, the approach from Cradle Mountain on Claude Road has been considered the main view point, with the Railton approach being the minorview point.

PART 03 - ARTISTIC ELEMENTS

ORIGINAL APPROACHPART 03 - ART INSTALLATIONS

Flos Legere will create a truly distinctive character for the Sheffield Main Street Revitalisation Project, which is best expressed as large metal triffid-like bloomsthat have a strange hyper-real appearance and mechanical quality to them. Individual and clustered flowers twist and turn as they reach for the sunlight.

This public sculpture is central in softening the built form of this environment as well as adding pedestrian and vehicular visual interest in the city with anoutdoor lifestyle and a highly marketable tourist image.

This developed concept which sits at various positions along the streetscape incorporates curvilinear and brightly coloured flowering sculptural forms that arebursting with a kaleidoscope of colour (see indicative design). Colour and form are an extremely important visual aspect of the design providing aesthetic valueto the sculptures but also creating a very desirable outdoor magnet to attract pedestrian traffic along the scenic walkway (both community and visitors) onclear days. The sculptures will act as landmark destination points for the community as well as activate the path, creating a truly distinctive character within thestreetscape.

This developed concept will be fabricated from a flat and tubular high grade metal alloy (5083 aluminium) that is made for the marine environment. Thesculptures will be vibrantly coloured using two pack automotive paint - a polyurethane combination that provides a finish that is exceptional in its resistance tomoisture and staining. Two pack paint delivers a durable, hardened surface that is available in a wide range of textures and practically unlimited colour optionswhilst offering greater protection against damage (durability and longevity in the external environment).

Please note the colours of the sculptured flowering forms are indicative and have not yet been finalised.

Day and Night ExperienceSite powered LED colour-changing lighting could be incorporated into the inner petal area of the sculptural flowering forms.

The inclusion of lighting will create another dimension to the works, subtly illuminating the inner bloom in coloured light at dusk and throughout the night, activating the ambience of the site and the sculptural works, creating an additional viewing experience for the artworks.

At this stage there has been no allowance made within the budget associated with lighting, however this can be refined in the next stage of the project shouldlighting be desired.

PART 04 - SEATING

PART 04 _ SEATINGSEATING WITHIN LANDSCAPE MASTERPLAN

The landscape masterplan and associated working drawings had already nominated seatinglocations along the revitalisation project.

Seating Type 01: Custom seating will be designed to be part of the Part 03 _ Artistic Elements. “Artistic Seating” will be delivered at the same time as the artwork components.

Seating Type 02: Standard ‘Sheffield’ seating to match existing branded high back benches.

SEATING TYPE 01 _ CUSTOM SEATING (3 SETS REQUIRED)

SEAT DESIGN:Seating will be created to sit alongside the 3d Artistic elements from part 03. Instead ofbench seating, ‘bloom stumps’ will be created to be part of the streetscape artwork.

Overall “bloom stump” quantities and strategy may change dependent on scope of part 03.Should artwork brief / scope of works change in relation to 3d artistic elements, quantityand scope of seating may change accordingly.

Image shown adjacent is of larger bloom cluster and increased seating.
