The Obligation of Banishing the People of Innovation From the Masā jid
By Al- ʿAll ā mah, al-Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-FawzānTranslated by Abū al-Ḥasan Mālik Ᾱdam al-Akhḍar
Al-ʿAllā mah Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān ( ( said:

“The Masā jid of Allāh shall be maintained only by those whobelieve in Allāh and the Last Day; perform al-Ṣal ā t and give
Zakā t .” [al-Tawbah 9:18]
So these are the people of the masā jid , and these are the people who areresponsible for them and placed in authority over them, not the disbelieversand the people of innovation; rather, [the masā jid ] are under the authority of the people of Imā n, the people of Taw ḥī d , the people of ʿAqī dah (sound creed).
Similarly, the masā jid must be safeguarded from that which does not befitthem; from the greatest [of these affairs], innovations, newly invented mattersand Shirk with Allāh (); so it is obligatory to banish the people of innovation, the people of superstitions and polytheists from the masā jid . It isnot permissible to allow them to establish themselves or their innovations, superstitions or Shirk in the masā jid .

“
It is not for the polytheists to maintain the houses of Allāh.” [al-Tawbah 9:17]
Rather, it is obligatory to prevent them from them. The masā jid must remainopen for the remembrance of Allāh () Alone and His worship alone.

This is how the masā jid are maintained, with Taw ḥī d and Ṭ aʿah (obedience);worship and remembrance of Allāh (). Similarly, the masā jid aresafeguarded from that which does not befit them from filth and impurities;and protected from ignoramuses and children who do wrong in them;protected from spitting saliva and phlegm in them. This is from what Allāh
() has prohibited.1
