Five-Year Plan: Initiatives

• The Five-Year plan is based on three initiatives.

• Goals were developed under each initiative with sub-goals being developed under each of the goals.

• Sub-goals are used to determine annual performance objectives for certified staff.

Five-Year Plan: Initiatives

Initiative 1. Student Achievement: Maximize educational

opportunities and achievement for all students.

Initiative 2. Communication and Collaboration: Optimize communication to encourage collaboration, support, and promotion for the school district.

Initiative 3. Efficiency and Infrastructure: Optimize resources to ensure safe and efficient facilities that support the district’s identified educational and extracurricular programs.

Facilitated the implementation of the Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS), including at-risk and high ability learners.

Developed a plan to implement the requirements of Quality Performance Accreditation (QPA) and No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

Developed strategies and interventions for targeted at-risk students and student groups.

Focused staff development on new curricula and specific strategies to enhance teaching skills and achievement.

Initiative 1: Student Achievement

Participated in and supported focus groups and developed a Professional Learning Communities (PLC) action plan for buildings, including support for common assessments.

Positive Behavioral Supports provided structure and support to all students and consistency in school procedures.

Developed an action plan for meeting the requirements of NCLB for each building. Reviewed data and made recommendations for changes to enhance achievement.

Reviewed and supported Signature Programs and Career and Technical Education programs, making revisions and planning for the future.

Initiative 1: Student Achievement

Developed strategies and interventions for targeted at-risk students.

Supported International Baccalaureate (IB) programs at SM East and SM Northwest. A third program at SM North is beginning its first year.

Staff development focused on new curricula and strategies for improved instructional skills, as well as curriculum realignments and textbook adoptions.

Common Core Standards implementation has started. Staff training and realignment of curricula is well underway.

• Courses for high school credit offered in middle schools

• Advanced courses in middle school

• District-wide Intramurals

• Pre-algebra offered in elementary schools

• Constant review and recommendations for course additions or deletions

Celebrations

• 20 National Merit finalists in 2012

• $50 million in scholarship offers for the 2012 graduates

• SM South 2012 Best High Schools list in U.S. News and World Report

• SM East is listed on Newsweek’s 2012 America’s Best High Schools list, an honor earned by only 6% of all public schools in the U.S.

• SM East, SM South, and SM Northwest have all been recognized on The Washington Post list of top high schools in the country in terms of college readiness.

Project Lead the Way students were semifinalists in the Battle of the Brains

competition, winning $2,500 for a museum exhibit proposal they created about the

Science of Flight.

Competition offered by the Art Institute of Atlanta, which came with a

$1,000 prize. He also received a first-place, $15,000 scholarship for a meal

portfolio.

• Numerous state titles including Academic Decathlon, Debate, girls swim and dive, boys and girls tennis, boys track and field, boys cross country

Kansas Assessments: SMSD

• Of the 14,000 students tested this past year, 91% met or exceeded target performance levels in reading and math.

• In the past three years the district has made considerable gains in closing gaps among various student groups.

• The growth rate for economically disadvantaged students and for English Language Learners is more than double the district’s growth as a whole in math and more than triple the district’s growth in reading.

• 38% or 5,253 students scored exemplary in reading

Shawnee Mission has 14 percent of the state’s National Merit Finalists

20 Shawnee Mission students named National Merit Finalists

Involved actively in Chamber of Commerce boards in Northeast Johnson County, Lenexa, Shawnee, Greater KC Hispanic Chamber, and the United Way. Participated in many community events. Neighborhood groups collaborated with advocacy efforts.

Monitored legislation and met with legislators. Participated on the Shawnee Legislative Affairs Committee and met with legislators individually to provide training and information. Sponsored legislative information sessions for public input. Posted information regularly on the website.

Focused successfully on volunteer recruitment. At year-end, there were 250 volunteers (118 of which were new in 09-10, 208 in 11-12). Will continue to recruit YouthFriends and volunteers as well as plan additional business partnership events.

Initiative 2: Communication and

Collaboration

Collaboration with local schools to support YouthFriends, Watch Dogs, Recycling and Composting Programs.

FaceBook site with more than 2600 fans. The district created a Twitter presence and has 480 followers. The superintendent also has a blog.

Broadcast Meetings and Events featuring professional development, live broadcast of Board of Education meetings, BizFest, R&D Forum, American Heroes, Basketball live broadcasts.

Collaborative partnership with local PTA, PTSA, SMAC, and SM-NEA.

Initiative 2: Communication and

Collaboration

Developed video projects in collaboration with community organizations and district programs such as biomedical/premedical presentation, video for IB and legal studies, and media/PowerPoint presentation for Teacher of the Year celebration.

In collaboration with SMEF, Broadmoor Bistro promoted the KC Originals visiting chefs and expanded other public relations avenues, such as Facebook and Twitter.

Every teacher district-wide has a Web BackPack containing important information for students and parents. Homework, class notes and other items can be found on these customized teacher pages.

Initiative 2: Communication and

Collaboration

• SMSD is nationally ranked among the top 4 percent of school districts nationwide according to Expansion Management magazine

• Six 2012 NSPRA Awards for the Communications Department

• SMSD high school journalists earned numerous awards from both the Kansas and National Scholastic Press Association

• SMSD high school journalism programs earned nominations for the coveted Pacemaker award, the highest award in scholastic journalism

• Human Resources department recognized for the employee newsletter by American Association of School Personnel Administrators

Celebrations

Developed and implemented a plan promoting an environmentally friendly school environment.

Developed several methods to utilize technology to streamline facility use, records storage, student transfer requests, employment applications, workers’ compensation, information to parents, students and staff, and BoardDocs.

Evaluated existing facilities and future needs. Capital Committee provided input with rationale and potential costs.

Assessed infrastructure requirements and provided cost estimate information for elementary and secondary schools and kitchen improvements.

• 53 elementary schools in 1970; 33 elementary schools in 2012

• 10 junior high schools; 5 middle schools in 2012

• 5 high schools in 1969 and 2012, Horizons

District Facility Efficiency • Average elementary school size in 2012-2013 = just

under 450

• Average elementary school size if no elementary schools were closed = just under 280

• Average middle school size in 2012-2013 = just under 800

• Average middle school size if no middle schools were closed = just under 400

• 28 schools have been closed since 1984

• If no closings had occurred, over time the district would be expending an estimated $13 million each year to operate the 28 buildings

Completed Phase Two construction activity and re-occupancy of new additions and renovated areas. Completed site restoration to areas affected by bond construction activities.

Conducted reviews of existing design standards to identify new standards addressing green product and material considerations. Assessed draft of revised standards for initial and operational cost impact. Produced final standards document for implementation in future capital improvement projects.

Initiative 3: Efficiency and

Infrastructure

Middle School facility additions and upgrades are underway. Hocker Grove, Trailridge and Indian Hills have completed phase one of their process. Indian Woods and Westridge plans are complete and construction has commenced.

Reduced expenditures totaling nearly $10 million; included reduction of teachers, administrators, and support staff.

Savings: Paper Reduction

• Paper usage reduced by 1,233,560 copies

• Represents about $6,200 in savings

• Achieved by using technology and reducing printed copies

• Using a central copy location instead of individual printers located in classrooms also results in an overall paper savings

• Schools received more than $22,000 for paper recycling program

• Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association and the Association of School Business Officials

• Brookwood Nationally Recognized as Green School of the Year

Celebrations • Recycle Bowl students at Bluejacket-Flint place 2nd in a

national recycling competition

• Brookwood, McAuliffe, Pawnee, Santa Fe Trail, Shawanoe, Tomahawk and Westwood View receive the 2012 EnergyStar building award

• Composting and recycling efforts district-wide helped divert 431 tons of waste from landfills
