Four arrested after Bangladesh girl'lashed to death'By Anbarasan Ethirajan BBC News, Dhaka

A crowd gathered outside the teenager's house after news of her death emerged

Four people including a Muslim cleric have been arrested in Bangladesh in connection with thedeath of 14-year-old girl who was publicly lashed.

The teenager was accused of having an affair with a married man, police say, and the

punishment was given under Islamic Sharia law.

Hena Begum's family members said a village court consisting of elders and clerics passed the

    sentence.

She was alleged to have had the affair with her cousin and received 80 lashes.

    Punishment received

The family members of the married man also allegedly beat the girl up a day before the village

court passed the sentence in the district of Shariatpur.

Hena Begum died after being taken to hospital

"Her family members said she was admitted to a hospital after the incident and she died six days

later. The village elders also asked the girl's father to pay a fine of about 50,000 Taka (430;$700)," district superintendent of police, AKM Shahidur Rahman, told the BBC.

He said it had not been established yet whether she died because of the punishment she

    received or another reason.

"We are still waiting for the post-mortem report. In the meantime, we are also looking for

another 14 people including a teacher from a local madrassa in connection with this case," Mr

    Rahman said.

Activists say dozens of fatwas - or religious rulings - are issued under Sharia law each year by

    village clergy in Bangladesh.

"What sort of justice is this? My daughter has been beaten to death in the name of justice. If it

had been a proper court then my daughter would not have died," Dorbesh Khan, the father of

    Hena Begum, told the BBC.

He said those responsible for the death should be punished.

A group of people held a rally on Wednesday in the town of Shariatpur in protest against those

who gave the fatwa and demanded action against them.

This is the second reported fatality linked to a Sharia law punishment since the practice wasoutlawed last year by the High Court.

A 40-year-old woman in the district of Rajshahi died in December, days after she was publicly

caned for allegedly having an affair with her stepson.

practise a moderate version of Islam

Quazi Courts to operate in Sri Lanka

Quazi courts will be set up under the construction programme of Courts.

Quazi Courts will be set up to deal with the cases relating to family disputes of Muslims. The construction ofQuazi courts in Samanthurai, Kinniya, Biyagaha and Puttalam areas is already underway. Thirty eight million

rupees has been allocated for this purpose. Fifty eight such courts will be set up throughout the island. So far thehouses of the Quazis were used in place of courts. The Ministry of Justice has pointed out that this can

undermine the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. Minister Athavuda Seneviratna has instructed theauthorities to expedite the construction work.

Ridiculous. In Sri Lanka, there should be one and only law and all Sri Lankans should abide by the law of theland. Do we need Taliban style courts in SL? If someone cannot get along with the Sri Lankan Law and it's court system,

they should find a place where their preffered law (such as Sharia Law) prevails. Min. Athauda Seneviratne, Pls, think

    before you put !!

Avissawella2000 4 months ago LAHORE: Javed Ahmed Ghamidi, prominent Islamic scholar known for pleading Islam as a progressive religion, said on Sunday there was no concept of Qazi courts in Islam and such courts in the Tribal Areas would create a messthere. It is the law that matters, and not the court, he said.

Ghamidi, who is also a member of the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), was talking to Daily Times on a proposal by the

government to promulgate regulation for law enforcement in the Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (PATA) which

includes Swat, Dir and Chitral, through Qazi courts.

He said that it would be another bad experience, as it had been tried previously. Terming it a parallel judicial system, hesaid there was no concept of Qazi courts in Islam. He said there never was a concept of Qazi courts during the Holy

Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him)s era. He said the plan regarding such courts was a bad example of curing a disease with

another disease, and this would give rise to more confusion and sectarianism, dividing the people.

Ghamidi said people must realise who Maulana Fazlullah who has now become a monster for security agencies inSwat in actuality is. He asked why such elements were not dealt with when they started proselytising through radio

broadcasting and increasing their circle of followers.

He spoke of the Lal Masjid incident when clerics carried out horrendous acts in the name of Islam with, reportedly, the

complete knowledge of certain government officials, yet suddenly Operation Silence was begun against them.

Blitzkrieg needed: He said the present situation was so complicated that it needed a Blitzkrieg strategy to control the

mess created by the security agencies themselves.

The solution was to bring the Tribal Areas to the countrys mainstream by improving the infrastructure and providing

education to the deprived people there, he added.
