    quick tips for your classroom

You are joining hundreds of thousands of teachers nationwide as you learn, teach and

celebrate the heritages of Americas First Peoples!

Before a speaker visits your class:

Find the area where your speaker is from on a map.

Introduce key vocabulary words and concepts to your students.

Ask students to imagine what life is like where your speaker is from

Talk about respect as one of the most important values in all Alaska Native cultures.

Discuss how you will show respect for your guest.

On the day of the visit:

Have a student meet the speaker at the main office and escort them to your class.

Schools can be difficult to navigate if you are unfamiliar with their layout.

Have water and any requested materials readily available.

Do not leave the speaker alone in the classroom. They are a guest -- you are

responsible for the behavior and participation of your class.

    After the visit:

Thank the speaker! Have students create cards or drawings to send to them.

Review the experience with students and tie the presentation in with other classwork

    you are doing.

Visit the Anchorage Museum or Alaska Native Heritage Center. You can schedule a

visit through the Community Resources office.

Please complete an evaluation form and return it to the Community Resources office.

Started in 1972, the NYO Games, previously known as the Native Youth Olympics, provide

insight into Alaskas rich cultural heritage while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Events are based

on games and life skills of past generations of Alaska Natives played as a way to test their

hunting and survival skills, and to increase strength, endurance, agility, and the balance of

mind and body. Although the event origins are based on traditional Native activities, the

competition is open to all students from seventh to 12th grade, regardless of ethnicity. The

event has grown to include more than 69 participating schools.
