CHANGE SERVICE REQUESTED
Triennium Update The Presbytery of the Northern Plains brought a group of 24 youth and 6 adults, this sum-
mer for Triennium July 15-July 21. Those that attended from this congregation were; Thomas
Allmer, Qualishie Hayes, Karla Sherfy and Rachel. The theme for the week was based on the
hymn, “Come Thou Fount.” Wednesday night they had a missions’ fair in the park, where kids
could go visit different missions and participate giving back. Thursday they had a concert in the
music hall from Soul Children of Chicago. Prior to the concert they had dance performances by
Minahasan Tribe of Indonesia and the American Indian Youth Council. Friday night they had the
Festival of Hearts on Memorial Mall complete with food trucks and music, dancing, food, activi-
ties, and fun. This was a great way for our three youth from Jamestown to meet youth from all over
the country, seek more of owning their faith, and bring the message back home.

More Dates to Remember . . .
Good News Ringers practice-planning session September 19
Transform, Engage, Serve
Pastor Bob Boyar
With summer coming to an end, we at the United Presbyterian Church in Jamestown, North
Dakota also embark on a parallel topic not of change of season but a more profound change
which is the unfolding of a new passion and drive, an ardent commitment to Transform, Engage,
and Serve. You are transformed by God to engage with others and the world to share Christ’s love
through service. In this first newsletter of the fall, the changing of the seasons, let us consider the
first piece of this theme. Transform. A synonym is Change.
Autumn for the year 2019 starts on September 23. In Autumn, the daylight gets shorter and
evenings become cooler. The plants drop their leaves and animals prepare for the cold winter
ahead. These are stark reminders that God has provided markers to help us remember changes
that take place in our lives. Things don’t stay the same. With each change in the seasons, we can
look back and marvel at what is new and what is no more. Think about the careers that did not
exist ten years ago. Try to remember when you didn’t have a television that you could pick up and
carry with no help and hang on the wall.
I am reminded of Ecclesiastes 3 which begins “For everything there is a season, and a time for
every matter under heaven; a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to
pluck up what is planted…” We often take for granted the wonder that is the workings of our
world.
In the daily grind of life, we become lost in the thought that we are in control and are indeed
masters of our own fate. There are times when we think that we are in control if one had not read
and pondered on Ecclesiastes 3. There are many other wonderful scriptures where we are
reminded of the wonders of God’s creation and none of what we have in this world came from us.
Everything in it came from God.
In the affairs of the world, one of the most devastating feelings in the Christian life is the feeling
that nothing or no one is going to change. This is the way I am; this is the way my spouse is; this
is the way my kids are; this is the way work is (or no work); this is the way our church is; this is
the way society is—and that's that. It's been this way for so long; it's just not going to change. It
will go on this way forever and probably get worse and that's that.

Deacon dialogue. . .
The Deacons are a group of men and women from our congrega-
tion that have a heart to serve those in our church and community. The
Deacons organize a variety of activities by which they share the love and
joy of Jesus Christ. The service of deacons in the Presbyterian Church
(USA) is to lead the church in its ministries of compassion (distributing aid, caring directly
for the poor, the sick, refugees, and prisoners), and justice (working for equity) in society.
The Deacons sponsor the Backpack Program which provides extra food for school
children on the weekend. Please place your donations under the “Giving Tree” which will
be up until the end of September. Thank you for your continued generous giving.
Don't forget there is a shopping cart in the Reading Room for Community Action.
Please consider a donation of non perishable items for Community Action.
We also are looking for personal hygiene items for Salvation Army (toothbrush,
tooth paste, bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, and etc.) There is a box in the shopping cart for
those donations also.
Look for more information about future Deacon projects in the Sunday bulletin.
Those currently serving as Deacons include:
Delbert Bossingham Tiffany Dauer Bill Hines
Colleen Nelson Pam Van Dyke Cindy Wermager
Diane Witzig Sandy Worm Clyde Young

Home Communion for Shut-Ins
Communion is brought to those unable to attend church. If you would like to receive
Communion, please call the church office at 252-1748. Next Communion will be served
Sunday, September 1.
Food Pantry Donations
There is a shopping cart in the reading room next to the nursery where donations for
the Food Pantry are accepted. Your contributions are very much appreciated. Due to such a
high demand this season the Salvation Army and Community Action are stretched to their
limits. Anything you can do to help would be greatly appreciated!

Christian Nurture
Don’t be afraid to start something new…transform yourselves!
With autumn soon approaching, the kids are back to school, and our calendars full…there are
a lot of changes! The weather will change, daily routines change, and maybe even our priori-
ties have changed. Lucas, my dog Yogi, and I just moved to a new house across town. We
moved from a two-bedroom apartment to a four-bedroom house. This will be the first time we
have lived as a couple in a house. Talk about change! You discover what things were lurking
behind your couch, what things need to be donated, and what things you kept for keepsakes.
This has always been a surprise to me no matter how many times I have moved (even if it is
just across town.)
Some of these changes are coupled with stress, disorder, doubt, and feeling overwhelmed.
How can I change when its too much to bear? Why do I need to change when its so inconven-
ient and sometimes feels unnecessary? It’s just too hard. The good news is that we aren’t alone
in this transformation. If we turn to God, He will provide us the help we need in the midst of
change. As it says in Isaiah 43:18-19,“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See,
I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up, do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the
wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”
If God can make streams in a wasteland then there isn’t anything he can’t do that will trans-
form us to a new state of mind, a new opportunity, or a new way of thinking. Ask God to help
transform you today to be open to new friendships, new experiences, or just having things
change in general. God, help us change and mold our hearts into a newness only you have in
sight for us. Help us to be people transformed by your love and engaged to serve. Amen.
Rachel Holsten
Banner
The banner that hangs on the west wall at the end of the hallway by the office was
made over 40 years ago for Mike and Jackie Tarpinian’s daughter Jodi’s wedding by Mary
Strandness as a gift to the family. It has been used for at least 3 of our family weddings here
in this church, and has been taken to Wisconsin for a wedding. It has been borrowed by nu-
merous families over the years for weddings but has not been hung in more than 20 years
until now. If a family would like to borrow it for a wedding, just contact Jackie at 269-
1515 and that could be arranged.
In September we will again begin our PW
Circle meetings and Bible study. The first
meeting will be held on September 26 with circles Faith and Hope meeting together for a
12:00 luncheon. Food will be provided.
Pastor Bob has agreed to introduce the study and lead the first lesson. The lesson is
called “Carved in Stone, a Fresh Look at the Ten Commandments.” We all think we know
these famous words but the study will give us valuable new insights through art and the
teachings of the study writers.
This fall we will have some leadership changes. Charlotte Enger will be our modera-
tor and circle leaders will be Susan Bond and Diane Witzig. Capable and faithful Yvonne
Wegner continues as secretary/treasurer.
We like keeping in touch with PW in the Presbytery. Some of our members will at-
tend a planning meeting in Grandin on August 24.
All women of our church family are invited to become part of the PW organization.
Plan to attend the luncheon on September 26.

Put on the new self, created to be like God
in true righteousness and holiness. —Ephesians 4:24
By: Amy Boucher Pye
Stephen grew up in a rough part of East London and fell into crime by the age of ten. He
said, “If everyone’s selling drugs and doing robberies and fraud, then you’re going to get involved.
It’s just a way of life.” But when he was twenty, he had a dream that changed him: “I heard God
saying, Stephen, you’re going to prison for murder.” This vivid dream served as a warning, and he
turned to God and received Jesus as his Savior—and the Holy Spirit transformed his life.
Stephen set up an organization that teaches inner-city kids discipline, morality, and respect
through sports. He credits God with the success he has seen as he prays with and trains the kids.
“Rebuilding misguided dreams,” he says.
In pursuing God and leaving behind our past, we—like Stephen—follow Paul’s charge to
the Ephesians to embrace a new way of life. Although our old self is “corrupted by its deceitful de-
sires,” we can daily seek to “put on the new self” that’s created to be like God (Ephesians 4:22, 24).
All believers embrace this continual process as we ask God through His Holy Spirit to make us more
like Him.
Stephen said, “Faith was a crucial foundation for me changing my life around.” How has
this been true for you?

From the Pastor (continued from page 2)
Bruce Hornsby and the Range released their debut album, The Way It Is in 1986. The title
song mentions a poor old lady being mocked by a man in a silk suit who says for fun as he hurries
by, “Get a job.” The refrain repeats in the song,
That’s just the way it is Some things will never change
That’s just the way it is Ah, but don’t you believe them.
Don’t believe some things will never change. God is in the transforming business. God
wants to even change you. God accepts you just the way you are. Yet, God refuses to let you stay
that way because God wants you and me to become more and more like Jesus.
People will always say that’s just the way it is, some things will never change. The Church’s
job and our task as followers of Christ is to say, that things can in fact change and be different by
God’s grace and for God’s glory and our good. Let us not be overcome by ungodly forces because in
this transformation process God is in power. He has the power over our inequities, so we were
transformed from sinners to one justified through Christ. God has power over our incapacities, as
we might think we are not capable to do God’s work. However, stories of the Bible proved this
wrong and as we engage and serve, let us all remember that whatever blocks our way to God’s
plans… God has power over our impediments. Through God in prayers, and by God’s words, we
can transform, engage, and serve to demonstrate God’s love in our service no matter what the cir-
cumstances will be.
