ShareBiotech Events Organiser’sReport This document aims at reporting about events organised by the ShareBiotech project. It is a basis to fill in the project indicators requested by the INTERREG authorities, but beyond this, it will also enable partners to evaluate the impacts of the project. Different categories of
events are to be organised in the ShareBiotech project: Transnational events and local technology meetings mainly, but other types of events may be organised in the course of the project.
Event Title: Marine Biological Resource Centres
Event type: Transnational Event
 Local Technology meeting
Other, please specify
Dates: 10 November 2011
Location Saint Malo, France
Organizers: CRITT Santé Bretagne

GENERAL COMMENTS We met the target which was 50 attendees (actually 49 including speakers), but we would have appreciated to have more people. The location was very good and in line with the topic, as Saint Malo Agglomération is currently structuring a Marine Biotechnology Science Park. It was good to have the logistics from the Palais du Grand Large (Congress centre). MBRC = Marine Biological resource Centre
QUALITY OF PROGRAMME, PRESENTATIONS AND DISCUSSION The programme was made i) to present several Marine Biological Resource Centres in the ShareBiotech regions and Scotland, ii) to tackle some sepcific topics in MBRC mangement, visibility, structuring, notably through presenting 2 European projects (EMBRC and EmbaRC), iii) give networking opportunities. The presentations were good, some were excellent. Attendees also appreciated to have both public sector BRCs and private BRCs presented (see satisfaction questionnaires summary, attached). One speaker finally couldn’t come which was a pity but at the same time it compensated for the delay taken! The round table didn’t work very well because participants of the round table had been asked to give very short presentations, but they spoke much more, so there was no time left for the questions and the real “round table”. It was very good to have European projects represented (one directly about “Marine Biological Resource Centres”, the topic of the day, the other one about Microorganims -not specifically from the sea: even if the second project was not right in the topic, microorganisms collections are facing the same challenges as other Biological resource Centres). The presentations they gave was very interesting. The discussions were good. Attendees was particularly interested in Intellectual Property Rights. The simultaneous translation was necessary for the foreigners to understand the speeches which were mainly in French.
BALANCE OF PARTICIPANTS (GENDER, EXPERIENCE, SECTOR OF ORIGIN) 32 women and 17 men. 5 people from Portugal (including 2 speakers), 1 person from Scotland (speaker), 1 person from Ireland (Speaker). 28 people from “Universities and Research Centres”, 10 people from companies, 1 person from Regional Authority, 1 from local authority, 1 from “Education and Training Centre”, 11 from “Other not for profit organisations (mainly, technology transfer associations, Competitiveness poles...). Even if the sectors of origin are not balanced, there was people from the right organisations to generate actions after the meeting, in particular the regional structuring of BRCs. There was not many people from other ShareBiotech regions, but again the present people were very relevant and some are asking for further collaborations.
OUTLOOK AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS (NOTES ON ACTIONS REQUIRED, LESSONS LEARNED, NEW PROJECTS GENERATED, NETWORKING) Attendees would like to know more about intellectual property rights, MTAs (Material Transfer Agreements). Initiatives could be developped in the future to address these topics. One of the objective was to launch initiatives about BRCs struturing and support in Bretagne. Further to the meeting, another meeting took place on this topic with the relevant regional actors. The presentations, and particularly the European projects, raised a lot of interesting issues (sustainability of BRCs, funding, intellectual property management, quality management, access policy, price structuring, etc...) which could be themes for other meeting/training sessions.
BENEFITS GAINED (SYNTHESIS) Participants were satisfied: 100 % of the attendees having filled out the satisfaction question said that the topics covered answered their expectations (Totally 52%, in part 48%). They also gained valuable information about the available marine organisms collections presented. Even if someone asked if there was a single information entry (e.g. a website), participants could understand that is is very difficult to gather and to organise all the available information, and that a lot of progress was made in the recent years. It was good to see people talking to each others (networking).
PROGRAMMES AND POLICIES INFLUENCED BY THE EVENT
Regional structuring of Biological Resource Centres, in Bretagne.

ORGANISATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE The logistics were very good notably thanks to the “Palais du Grand Large” which is very convenient. It was also necessary to have simultaneous translation. It took a lot of time to organise such a meeting and Human resources may be under-estimated in the ShareBiotech project. That’s reallt time-consuming.
SUMMARY & OVERALL ASSESSMENT Very good meeting.

and environment core facility network in Western France. It is coordinated by Bretagne
Développement Innovation and CRITT Santé Bretagne. The project aims at strengthening
the biotechnology sector within the European Atlantic Area, by facilitating access to
technological core facilities including biological resource centres, for researchers and
companies.
