NATIONAL CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE

September 2012

My new friends in the Catholic Daughters of the Americas,

I am pleased and honored to have been asked by our new National Regent, Anne Nelson, to

serve as National Chaplain. It is my great regret to have not been able to be with you for the national

convention in Omaha; it was due to back surgery.

For twenty-nine years, I have served as a parish priest in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. It was in

my second assignment that I met Anne in her home Parish of St. Philip Neri on the outskirts of

Baltimore. For two years I served in the Tribunal of the Archdiocese, mostly processing annulments of

marriages. (If you have any questions in that regard or I can be of help, just e-mail me.) Currently I am

serving as priest-chaplain at Mercy Medical Center in downtown Baltimore, a hospital sponsored by the

Religious Sisters of Mercy.

In Fr. Ed’s column in the summer issue of SHARE, he wrote about the naming of John the

Baptist, repeating Juliet’s question: “what’s in a name?” I would like to “spring-board” from his column

because many of you, I should say “us”, are going through not a name change, but a change in our titles.

So, I ask the question: “what’s in a title?” With the Catholic Daughters, titles are not given as

honorifics, such as a queen naming someone a lord or a lady. No, within the Catholic Daughters, even

new as I am, I know that titles are given not for honor, but for service, same as within our Catholic

Church. A bishop is appointed to a diocese, such as Archbishop William Lori to Baltimore, not to

“lord” it over us, but to be our shepherd-leader using his crozier to keep us within the flock.

Consider, then, if you are experiencing a title-change, not so much as a honor or a promotion, but

as a call to service, a specific form of service, within The Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Yes, you

were elected to your post, just as Matthias was in Acts of Apostles, chapter two. The apostles gathered

together, presided over by Mary, the Mother of our Risen Lord, under the guidance, wisdom, and

providence of the Holy Spirit.

Think of your election in the same way. The body who elected you to your title, did so under the

power of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of our Blessed Mother Mary.

May I suggest, then, in the coming days and weeks of your new term of office, meditate upon to

what you are elected and called. What is it that you and I should be doing? Are we doing it, using our

God-given talents, to the best of our abilities? Just as importantly, are we doing the best we can in

service to our sisters in The Catholic Daughters of the Americas?

Dear Catholic Daughters,

Peace be with you. The 54th Biennial Convention is a memory and your State Officers are planning the next year’s

events. I would like to extend my congratulations to the Nebraska State Officers, Committee Chairman and all

those smiling Nebraska women who were ever present to help us. It was a job well done. It was a great

convention due to all your hard work. Thanks should also go to Convention Chairman, Shirley Seyfried for her

excellent guidance throughout the pre-convention planning and the convention itself.

Many thanks to our Immediate Past National Regent, Joanne Tomassi. She worked tirelessly; she shared her

knowledge and skills with us all. She was the perfect example of what we should strive to be. Thank you Joanne,

you have shown for showing us the way and led us so effectively.

The crisp fall air renews and invigorates us and helps us again to appreciate what God has provided. Fall offers us

opportunities to recognize the beauty that surrounds us, causing us to consider how we can look anew at our

organization goals and activities. Fall also brings the start of a new school year for our children and

grandchildren; it should mark the start of our CDA year. Think of how exciting it is for kids to start or return to

school—how thrilled they are with their new backpack, new shoes and that wonderful box of new crayons.

Students always return eager to see old friends and enthused to make new ones. How can we foster the same

enthusiasm at the start of our next meeting? While others shop for back to school supplies, we should prepare our

tools of good leadership and offer our example a good leader. We need to set goals and strategies and equip or

members with the enthusiasm to renew their commitment to the CDA. We need to build the excitement among

our members. Let them open the new box of crayons and help color the programs for your court. Just as children

get a new outfit for the first day of school so should we put on a new outfit of CDA good.

As with each convention, we have changes and new ideas come to the forefront. Please review the post

convention information enclosed, the new bylaws passed, and resolutions accepted. Check out our website for

more convention information and pictures.

I would like to thank all the delegates who placed their trust in me by placing the leadership of the CDA into my

hands. I promise to you that I will spend my energy spreading the word and work of the CDA everywhere I go. I

will proudly wear my purple and gold and regale all who ask. ”What are the Catholic Daughters?” I will answer

that we are Catholic women who live the gospel in word and in action and are proud to be Catholic.

I promise you also that I will hold true to our traditions but not turn from new ideas and ways. We have a great

history and even brighter futures IF we all work together to inform, educate, encourage and praise our members

and seek new members. The leadership may hold the reins of the organization but the spirit and the life of the

Order lay in membership’s hands, your hands. None of us should function as isolated groups but must work

together for growth and success to occur.

I chose as my theme “I am the vine, you are the branches.” It is from the John’s Gospel. It speaks to us as

Catholic women working for a common cause. If we stay rooted and true to our faith, we will be strong and

successful. This little story was the catalyst for me choosing this theme:

Story of the Little Grape Stem

Once upon a time there was a little grape stem. This stem was so glad to be alive.

She drank from the water and minerals from the soil and she grew and grew.

But she was young and thought she was strong and could manage quite well … ALL BY HERSELF.

But then, the wind was cruel, the rain was harsh, the snow was not one bit understanding, and the little

grape stem suffered! She drooped, and was weak and suffering.

It would be so easy to stop trying to grow, to stop trying to live, and the grape stem was so lonely! The

winter was long and the stem was weary.

But then the little grape stem heard a voice. It was another grape stem calling out to her…

“Here reach out. Hang onto me.” But the stem hesitated. ‘What would this mean?’ she thought. For you

see, the little stem had always managed quite well…. ALL BY HERSELF.

But then ever so cautiously, she reached out toward the other grape stem. “See, I can help you,” it said.

“Just wind your tendrils about me, and I will help lift your head.” And the little stem trusted and

suddenly she could stand straight again.

The wind came, and the rain and the snow. But when it came, the grape stem was clinging to many other

stems. And although the stems were swayed by the wind and frozen by the snow,

They stood strongly united to each other. And in their strength THEY COULD SMILE AND GROW

and be fruitful.

And then one day the little stem looked down and saw a tiny stem, below her swaying and frightened.

And our little grape stem said, “Here, hang on… I will help you.”

And the other stem reached up to our grape stem and together all the stems grew

Be the grape stem to other CDA members. We are watered from the same source and we are nourished

from the same food. Let us reach out to help others grow.

(cdaroster@aol.com) for any updated listing. This list should be reviewed periodically to be sure that member

additions, transfers and deletions have been received at the National Office. It is a useful tool to have at your

Financial Review. Changes must be made in writing by mail or email.

on the correction your form. Listing only the Court number and Member ID leads to confusion and errors. Please

NATIONAL CDA SUNDAY TO BE OBSERVED

Catholic Daughters of the Americas National CDA Day will be observed on Sunday, October 21, 2012. The

theme for this year is “With God All Things as Possible” (Matthew 19:26) as Catholic Daughters work tirelessly

to obtain justice and compassion for the poor, the homeless, the marginalized, and the disenfranchised of the

world. A sample Proclamation was in the June Quarterly newsletter.

YOUTH

Make A Difference Day 2012 will be on Saturday, October 27. Make A Difference Day is celebrated each year on

the 4th Saturday in October. Created by USA WEEKEND Magazine, it is the nation’s largest day of volunteering,

thanks to the passion of millions of people like you. Together with long-standing partner HandsOn Network, the

generosity of Newman’s Own and hundreds of carrier newspapers, USA WEEKEND rallies millions in a single

day to help change the world. Courts are urged to sponsor an event with a youth organization and/or a JCDA

Court.

information with your membership.

SALE OF ARTICLES

Enclosed is the updated Sale of Articles listing. Please be sure to read the first page with the information

concerning your orders. We have also listed the new items that were previewed at the National Convention (Court

Officer pins, red shirts to wear on Fridays, deacon or priest stoles, purple nylon jackets, purple sweatshirts, prayer

cards, CDA sash) as well as items with price reductions. Share this with your members. Many members contact

us to see if they can purchase items that they saw on the website and were never told about at their meetings.

STORE ON WEB SITE On the Catholic Daughters web site www.catholicdaughters.org we have our Sale of Articles as a store. An officer

from the Court can place orders for less than $50.00 and it is sent to the National Office via email. You can also

go there to look at a picture of any item we have for sale. Any orders that are over $50 can be printed out and then

sent in the mail with a Court check to cover a 50% deposit. No one may order without the permission of the

Court. All invoices are billed to the Court and must be paid with a court check. No personal checks are

accepted. Members who purchase items must pay the Court and the Court sends in a check.

Dear Sisters in Christ,

I am writing to you today from Edward White Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, where I am recovering from

knee replacement surgery. I scheduled the surgery for the day after I returned home from the 54th Biennial

National Convention in Omaha, Nebraska. My family joked that having surgery was the only thing that would

force me to rest and relax after the whirlwind of activity that was our National Convention…and they may be

right!

This year’s convention was busy and productive, with several new resolutions and amendments to the Bylaws

presented to the delegates. Those that passed are presented here in this quarterly newsletter for your review. You

will notice that many of the new Bylaws pertain to the governing of the Campus Courts. One of the primary goals

of my term of office was to develop a handbook for the Campus Courts, and these amendments will help with that

considerably. I am very grateful to our new National Regent, Anne Nelson, as well as Olga Samaniego and Emily

Guilherme for all their hard work on the Campus Courts Handbook, which will be released later this year.

My entire National Board deserves praise for all of their efforts during the past two years. I was very fortunate to

get to serve alongside so many talented, capable women who were committed to their calling to the Catholic

Daughters. I would like to thank Letty Calvetti for her successful membership campaign, Helene Shepard for her

devotion to our National Projects and leadership efforts, Arline Rich for her work on JCDA and our youth

programs, and all of the National Directors who worked on a range of topics from Standing Rules to Education.

A special thanks is due to Shirley Seyfried, who chaired the convention committee and was responsible for the

planning and preparations. This is a monumental task, and Shirley did a great job ensuring that the convention

went off without a hitch. In addition to all the business that got done, there was also time for helpful workshops,

charitable projects, beautiful prayer services, and celebratory fellowship at the convention. During the course of

the convention there were five occasions of the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The monetary offerings

collected were designated for specific charities. As a result the following contributions have been made:

Thursday's Memorial Liturgy collection was for Boys Town Omaha, and we gave a total of $1900.00.

Friday's Liturgy for God and Country collection was for The Archdiocese for the Military, USA, and we

collected $1800.00.

Saturday's Mass of Installation was at St. Cecelia Cathedral and the collection was given to the parish in

thanksgiving of their hospitality and assistance during our visit.

Saturday's Late Night Mass of Thanksgiving raised $900.00 for the North American College.

At Sunday's Mass of Thanksgiving the collection of $500.00 was taken up for the Basilica of the National

Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C.

In addition to the donations given to our National Projects at the convention, there were several more gifts to

charity on your behalf. In honor of all members and guests who were in attendance at the Appreciation Banquet

of the 54th Biennial National Convention, a check in the amount of $6,480.00 was sent to the Laboure Society,

representing your dinner "favor" as well as your generous spirit. This amount would have been spent to purchase

a gift for each of you, but in the spirit of charity, attending Catholic Daughters agreed to donate the cost of the

party favors instead.

The Walk/Run for Life was also a successful demonstration of the generosity of Catholic Daughters and our

supporters, raising $9,805.00 for our National Projects. Additionally, we were honored to host Sr. Rosemary

Connelly of Misericordia, our Catholic Woman of the Year, who was presented with a check for $5,000 and an

engraved award “for bringing the light of Christ to others.”

Your generosity, and that of our State and National Boards, has left me so much to be thankful for. Several

conventions ago we added the "basket raffle" to our offerings. The first year it contained mostly baskets donated

by members of the National Board. Two years ago the hosting state jumped on board and provided many more

baskets. This year, I reached out to our State Regents and asked for help. Your generosity was overwhelming.

We had a total of 40 baskets as well as a door prize valued at +$100.00. Thank you to everyone who so

generously contributed a prize. You not only provided the financial means for purchasing it but you made sure it

arrived in Omaha and was delivered to the right location. The net proceeds of this event were $4703.00 and will

be used toward the expenses of renting the convention center. I am also grateful to Craig from All American

Travel who again donated a $500.00 gift certificate for our "All American" raffle. The net proceeds of this raffle

was $987.00 and will also be used towards the CenturyLink Center bill. Last but certainly not least is a BIG

thank you to all who attended and participated. Each day we sold "Lucky Bucks" tickets. Each afternoon we held

the drawing. Half of the sales went to CDA National and the other half was divided between three lucky winners.

Total sales came to $8,561.00! Twelve lucky winners shared $4280.50 and the balance went toward the bills.

The subject of National Dues was addressed by motion of the delegation. After much discussion the following

motion was made, seconded and carried:

“That in respect of information shared at this convention and the fact that it has been twelve years

since we have increased our dues, and as the delegation are the ‘messengers’ back to our local

courts, I move that we both increase national dues to $15 per year and make a concerted effort to

ask every Catholic woman we meet to join our organization.”

In addition a second motion was made, seconded and carried:

“I move the postponement of the dues increase until the March 2013 billing cycle.”

Therefore, the billing cycle based on membership as of September 30, 2012 will be billed at the current dues rate

of $10.00 per year, $5.00 per billing cycle. As of the March 31, 2012 billing the new dues rate will apply, $15.00

per year, $7.50 per billing cycle. We are grateful to the delegation for their understanding of the need for this

change and are hopeful that our continued focus on membership increase will help us grow in numbers so as to

not need another increase in the near future.

At the convention, we also had the opportunity to remember those Catholic Daughters who are no longer with us,

and to give thanks to those who are present, giving so much of themselves to our organization. At this moment, I

am especially appreciative of all those who helped me on my journey to serve as your National Regent. In

addition to the National Board that I had the privilege of calling my own, I am so grateful to Peggy O’Brien and

Mary Impellizeri, for your tireless work and endless resourcefulness. Thank you, Past National Regents, for your

guidance and support. Thank you, Nebraska State Board, for your warm welcome in Omaha. Thank you,

National Chaplain Rev. Ed Lamp, for your prayers and spiritual encouragement. Thank you to my family,

especially my mother Rose Tomassi - who introduced me to the Catholic Daughters and showed me the love,

unity, and charity for which they are known - and my niece and personal secretary, Catherine Wilkins. Finally,

thank you, members of CDA, for the trust, prayers, and devoted labors that you ceaselessly put forth. I, in turn,

am praying for you and for the continued strength and success of our organization. I have faith that the Catholic

Daughters will continue to grow and thrive for, “with God, all things are possible.”

D. If a member of the Nominating Committee intends to become a candidate for office, she must resign from the Nominating Committee by FEBRUARY 1ST t prior to the National Convention, by submitting her written resignation to the National Regent.

A member who intends to run for office shall submit a statement of qualifications, a current photograph, and a statement of endorsement by the Local Court of the candidate WHICH MUST BE VOTED ON AT A LOCAL COURT MEETING AND SIGNED BY A MAJORITY OF THE LOCAL COURT OFFICERS and consent to serve signed by the candidate. Five (5) copies of each shall be received by the Nominating Committee Chairman no later than February 1st of the convention year.

ARTICLE XI STATE NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS

Sec. 2 COMPOSITION OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE

D. If a member of the Nominating Committee intends to become a candidate for office, she must resign from the Nominating Committee, by FEBRUARY 1ST of the year of the State Convention, by submitting her written resignation to the State Regent.

ARTICLE XI STATE NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS

Sec. 4 REPORT OF THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE AND NOMINATIONS FROM THE FLOOR

E. In the event that a nomination is not forthcoming from the floor for a vacant (open) office, the

newly elected State Board shall fill that position AFTER OFFICIALLY TAKING OFFICE THIRTY (30) DAYS AFTER ELECTION.

The remaining amendments were passed to add a new Article to the bylaws: ARTICLE XIV CAMPUS COURT

Sec. 1 compositions

The composition of a Campus Court is at least fifteen (15) members at institution and

maintains a membership of no less than eight (8) for more than three (3) consecutive

years who have been received into a Catholic Daughters of the Americas court on a

college or University campus.

Sec. 2 OFFICERS A. The Officers of a Campus Court shall be a Regent, Vice Regent, Recording Secretary, Financial Secretary, and Treasurer if permitted to function by campus rules. B. Nominations for court officers are made from the floor at the first business meeting of the fall semester. C. Elections are conducted by voice vote or ballot at the first meeting of the fall semester. D. Officers are installed and take office immediately upon election.

Sec. 3 ELIGIBILITY

A. Members in good standing, whose dues are no more than three months in arrears, shall be eligible for elected office. B. Members shall hold only one (1) office at a time.

Sec. 4 TERM OF OFFICE

A. The term of office shall be for one year. Officers shall serve only two (2) consecutive

terms or two (2) years in any one office.

Sec. 5 FORFEITURE OF OFFICE

A. Any Campus Court Officer absenting herself from three (3) meetings, unless excused

by the Campus Court Advisor, shall forfeit her office.

B. In the event of disqualification, absence, refusal, inability or neglect of any Campus

Court Officer to discharge the duties of her office, after consultation with the Campus

Court Advisor, and a hearing by the Campus Court Officers, the Campus Court

Officers may, by a majority vote, remove her from office. Sec. 6 VACANCIES

A. Vacancies in any elective office, with the exception of Regent, shall be filled by an election held at the next regular meeting following the vacancy, after written notice has been given to all members.

B. Vacancies in the elective office of Regent shall be filled by the Vice Regent. Sec. 7 DUTIES OF CAMPUS OFFICERS

A. The Regent shall: 1. Be the chief administrator of THE ORDER in the Court and responsible to the State

Regent. 2. Enforce the bylaws of THE ORDER. 3. Preside at all meetings. 4. Appoint all committees and be an ex-officio member of all committees except the

Nominating Committee. 5. Represent the Court at meetings of the State Court. Expenses may be paid by the

Campus Court.

6. Be responsible for the development and updating of Standing Rules for the Court. 7. Countersign all Campus Court checks drawn and signed by the Treasurer. 8. Appoint a Financial Review Committee of three (3) members to review the books of

the Financial Secretary, Recording Secretary and Treasurer for the semi-annual period as of March 31 and September 30. A majority of the Committee shall be present for the Financial Review.

9. When necessary, terminate membership. 10. Perform other such duties as listed in the Procedures Manual.

B. The Vice Regent shall: 1. In the absence or inability of the Regent, assume her duties. 2. Assist the Regent when requested. 3. Perform other such duties as assigned by the Regent and/or as listed in the

Procedures Manual.

C. The Recording Secretary shall: 1. Keep accurate minutes of all proceedings of the court. 2. Perform other such duties as assigned by the Regent and/or as listed in the

Procedures Manual.

D. The Financial Secretary shall: 1. Keep account of the membership of the Campus Court. 2. Receive and transmit all monies of the court to the Treasurer. 3. Report any changes in membership when they occur to the National Office and to

the State Secretary. All changes in membership must be in the hands of the National Office no later than April 15 for dues billed in May based on membership as of March 31 and no later than October 15 for dues billed in November based on membership as of September 30.

4. Notify the National Office and the State Regent of the names, addresses, and identification numbers of the Campus Court officers immediately following the election.

5. Perform other such duties as assigned by the Regent and/or as listed in the Procedures Manual.

E. The Treasurer shall: 1. Receive from the Financial Secretary monies collected at each meeting and give a

receipt for same. 2. Record and deposit all monies received from the Financial Secretary. 3. Maintain balances not in excess of insured amount in one depository. The

deposit slip may be accepted as a voucher for Financial Review purposes. 4. Pay monies assessed or owed to the National Office. 5. Pay to the State Secretary monies due to the State Court 6. Pay bills approved by the Court. 7. Present a financial report at each meeting, a copy to be filed with the Regent and

Recording Secretary. 8. A semi-annual report of finances shall be completed by the Financial Review

Committee as of March 31 and September 30 and submitted to the National Office, the State Regent, and the State Secretary. The report shall be on forms furnished by the National Office and submitted no later than April 30 and October 31.

9. Perform other such duties as assigned by the Regent and/or as listed in the Procedures Manual.

Sec. 8 MEETINGS

A. One (1) regular business meeting shall be held each month in Campus Courts according to their college calendar.

B. Each Campus Court shall set time and place of monthly meetings and may change same by vote of membership at a regular business meeting.

C. A special meeting may be called providing fifteen (15) days notice in writing has been sent to every member and advisor, together with an agenda containing only items to be taken up at the special meeting.

Sec. 9 QUORUM

A quorum for transaction of business shall be eight (8) members, providing a majority of Officers are present. If the membership of the court is less than 15 members, a quorum shall consist of the majority of the members of that court providing a majority of the officers are present.”

Sec. 10 STANDING RULES

Any Court may enact Standing Rules which shall not conflict with the bylaws of THE ORDER.

Sec. 11 SPIRITUAL ADVISOR The Campus Court Chaplain, deacon, religious or other clergy shall:

A. Serve at the request of the Regent. B. Conduct religious exercises of the court. C. Be a spiritual advisor and bring before the membership specific concerns

recommended for sponsorship by the court. D. Be consulted as to the appropriateness of speakers and subjects at court

meetings. Sec. 12 CAMPUS COURT ADVISOR

Duties of Advisor

A. Become familiar with the Bylaws and the Tools of the Trade of THE ORDER.

B. Attend all court meetings.

C. Advise and support the officers.

D. Ensure the officers are fulfilling the requirements of their offices.

E. Ensure that all reports and monies are sent to the National and State.

F. Act as a liaison between the campus and the court.

G. Encourage court members to be active and vital participants in CDA programs.

H. Ensure that the yearly Campus Court Report is sent to the Campus Court Chairman by

May 1st.

I. Ensure that the Membership Roster and Officers’ List is sent to the National Office and the

Campus Court Chairman after fall elections.

J. Ensure that the Financial Review is held and the form is sent to the National Office, the

State Regent, and the Campus Court Chairman.

K. The advisor will keep the director of campus ministry informed of proceedings and

procedure NOTE: Updated bylaws will be prepared for purchase by October 1, 2012. In addition, there will be

“kits” for updating your current edition available at that time. It will contain only those pages that must

be replaced as a result of current amendments.

RESOLUTIONS FOR THE CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS Adopted at the 54th Biennial National Convention

1. WHEREAS, the USO (United Service Organizations) lifts the spirits of America’s troops and

their families millions of times each year at hundreds of locations worldwide, and

WHEREAS, the USO provides a touch of home through centers at airports and military bases,

top quality entertainment, and innovative programs and services, and

WHEREAS, the USO provides critical support to those who need it most, including forward-

deployed troops and their families, wounded warriors and their families, and the

families of the fallen, and

WHEREAS, the USO is a private, non-profit organization, not a government agency, and the

USO relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, on Make a Difference Day, send

Christmas cards to troops or collect items for Holiday Box drives to send to

troops.

WHEREAS, His Excellency, Bishop Glen John Provost, Bishop of the Diocese of Lake Charles, Louisiana, took the occasion of his “ad limina” visit to Rome to request the favor from the Holy Father through the Congregation of Divine Worship for permission to make a formal invitation to the Pope’s ambassador to the United States to officiate at the Centennial Year of the historic Cathedral church’s dedication in 2013; and

WHEREAS, the Papal Nuncio, His Excellency, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganó has accepted the invitation to perform a special and privileged rite, “The Crowning of an Image of Our Lady in the Name and Authority of the Holy Father” at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, August 22, 2013, the Feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary; and

WHEREAS, Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Viganó will use a crown that has been created by Roman artisans, who are purveyors to the Vatican, in a ceremony that is more commonly done in Europe and rarely in the United States; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Catholic Daughters of the Americas afford this historic opportunity to properly celebrate the centennial of the Cathedral church’s dedication, renew their devotion to the Blessed Mother and her Divine Son, Jesus Christ, and foster a deeper union with the Holy Father and the See of St. Peter. 3. WHEREAS, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas promote the dignity of all human life from conception to natural death; and

WHEREAS, the practice of human-trafficking and slave labor is rampant throughout the world, even in the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, the products sold in the United States often are made in factories abroad where women, children and some men are forced to work long hours for little or no pay; and

WHEREAS, the power of the consumer will make a strong impact on these practices, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the Catholic Daughters of the Americas adopt a campaign to promote the purchase of Fair Trade items; and be it further

RESOLVED, that members who are able download the APP Free2Work, which can scan an item and tell if it was made by slave labor; and be it further

RESOLVED, that the members contact their elected officials to enact laws that prohibit the use of women and children as “objects of the economy rather than subjects of the economy”. Submitted by: Massachusetts State Court

4. WHEREAS, Father Stanley Francis Rother, native Oklahoma priest and missionary, is being

considered for sainthood, and

WHEREAS, Father Rother was martyred on July 28, 1981, in Santiago Atitlan, Guatemala, for

his extraordinary and courageous defense in his faith, and

WHEREAS, he displayed the virtues of unity and charity while teaching, working with, and

ministering to the natives, and

WHEREAS, the lengthy process which could lead to his beatification and canonization

is presently underway, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Catholic Daughters pray that he will be proclaimed by the universal

Church as martyr and saint.
