Warming up before a work-out are Sue Ward and Pete Waugh, while instructor Shaun Brettell takes a pulse reading. Shaping up to a fitter way of life It sets the heart punnping fast. It gets lazy lungs doing overtinne. It makes you use muscles you didn't know you possessed. It sounds like hard work. Yet a growing number of Mitcheldean men and women are choosing to stay on after a full day's work to do just that, at the Lira Leisure fitness centre. They are finding it an effective, and enjoyable, way of taking the weight off mind — and body. People everywhere, it seems, are re- alising that when you are physically fit you can cope far better with what life throws at you; companies are appreciat- ing that a physically fit worker is a better, more alert worker. Other Rank Xerox locations have their 'in house' gymnasiums and health & fitness programmes; and when Lira Leisure opened their fitness centre con- veniently next door in the MEWS, it provided a two-fold opportunity. Firstly, to make the club facilities available to employees at very attractive rates by means of a block booking; and, secondly, to support a local enterprise. "I think it is an excellent facility. I'm a firm believer in people maintaining a good level of fitness, particularly when their job is a sedentan/ one," says David Stokes, manager, materials, programmes and technical services. . A regular attender himself, he told us: "It gets me in good shape for the summer climbing." We asked other Mitcheldean members about their reasons for joining, and what they liked about the facility, Pete Waugh (maintenance), who used to attend a fitness centre in Chepstow, is keen to reduce his weight. He goes in the evenings and, when on night shift, in the afternoon. (Continued over/eaf)

LEADERSHIP THRO While everyone on site must be familiar by now witf have yet to receive their introduction to Leadership Huckett, manager, business and product quality asi its impact on Mitcheldean and how each membei

"Considering our track record in 1983 I had expected us to be in the finals," said Gavin Greene (OA), looking very pleased wi th his gift tankard. "The award is txjund to enhance our image and help wi th company publicity. Now w e shall have to fight that much harder to improve on our performance." A n inspector w h o has always worked on small copiers during his eight years at Mitcheldean, Gavin is now involved wi th our latest model. Checking that other people produce high quality work is his job; but, as he points out, inspectors themselves have to make sure that the information whk;h they pass on is accurate too

Pearl Phelps, secretary to works engineering manager Mike Cooper, and now in her 14th year w i th us, chose a credit card calculator. "I deal w i th lots of f igures." she told us, "and I use a desk-top calculator to make sure I get my sums right when working on the business quality review. I like to check my receipts w h e n I'm shopping too and work out VAT percentages. Now I've a neat little calculator (with a pocket for credit cards) which I can slip into my wallet, I can do my checking where it should be done - at the check-out." It's always more troublesome to put things right than to get them right first time. Pearl believes.

'There's only one way to do it - safely," said Dick Morgan of transport dept. when we asked him about driving 'with quality'. And that includes ensuring his vehicle is in safe working condition. Dick has had a quarter of a century's experience in driving; he received his advanced HGV driving certificate 16 years ago, and was six t imes a finalist in the 'Lorry Driver of the Year' competition. Checking the papenwrk and the corresponding load are correa is another quality factor, and our picture shows him using his choice of gift - a Papermate pen - to mark his worksheet.

Dave Sterry chose sherry glasses as his quality gift. " I 'm not a sherry drinker myself, but we like to have some for visitors," he said, "and they'll make a talking point." Dave has been in production stores all his 1 1 y e a r s with us and he reckons w e have improved a lot in the last few years. Parts handled in the stores range from castings to tiny washers and Dave is well aware of the need to put items in the right location, pick them out accurately and ensure they are packed in adequate toting. Taking care in handling goods so as not to damage them, or vehicles so they are not a hazard to people, are also important quality factors in his area.

"Everybody put a tremendous effort into it and it"s great to find ourselves in the top league," said Bernie Sherwood. His choice of gift was a Ronson lighter. "I like the idea of a souvenir; money would just have been frittered away and it wouldn"t have given us something to rememtser the event by." Bernie started wi th the company 16 years ago and currently packs CBA machines in refurbishing operations. As he knows, packing is every bit as important as any other operation in building machines, and quality work is essential if they are to reach the customer in the same defect-free condition in which they leave the plant.

"I think it was a great achievement," sakJ Daphne Jones, "and a nice gesture to give each person a gift." She chose a print of Tintern Abbey. I've always been interested in old buildings,'" she told us. Her husband Keith (works engineering) had one of Ross-on-Wye, and "'the two prints have a place of honour in our hall," she said. Daphne has been eight years wi th us, during wh ich t ime she has always worked on cableforms and harness assemblies. "It's important to make sure the pins are properly pushed into the connectors, the tagging is good and there are no broken wires so as to get a defect-free result," she explained.

We apologise (in Russian) for our error in an article on page 4 of the last issue about George Batten, our computer curate. Keith Laken (personnel),, who speaks the language, tells us that the name of the Benedictine monastery referred to was incorrectly given as 'Nashdon'. It should have been 'Nash dom' (our house).
