Try to hear the ‘altered sound’ over the G7 dominant chord.

Once you can play the written examples try to experiment with the

timing of each phrase.

Make sure to look at the fingerboard so you can ‘see’ the arpeggios

you’re using.

Take it easy... and get in the shed! Scott ;)

Shape Shifting (minor 3rd Shift) (L#79)

Your Action Plan

1. Familiarize yourself with the chord tones from a II V Iprogression in the key of C major. Knowing yourarpeggios all over the fingerboard using differentfingerings is one of the most important things you'llever practice. Other than rhythm it's the foundationto everything you'll ever play on the bass. I'mpracticing different things on a day-to-day basis butthe one thing that is constant is my arpeggio/chordtone practice. I work on these for at least 30 minutesper day.

2. Work through the exercises within the tutorial. Again, take it slowly and make sure you can understandwhat you're playing and why it works. For you torecreate solo lines like these on the fly you mustunderstand the inner workings of these conceptsotherwise it would be like baking a cake, but notknowing what ingredients to use.

3. I've shown you three different licks you can use withthis technique. Now I want you to come up with twomore of your own. You can either stick with the keywe've been working with, or if you feel like it you cantry it out over a new key.

4. Try using these shape-shifting ideas whileimprovising over a jazz standard. When choosing astandard to use, look for something that has multipleII V I's within the chord progression, so you get plentyof chances to use these ideas. Here's a list ofstandards you could use.
