The Social ProblemIssue name: Career orientation is a subject that is not discussed very seriously in high schools, no support on self reflection or finding one’s passions, the influence of teachers, parents, friends when choosing a career path

The end of High School represent the moment when young adults choose their future careers. In order to be able to make the right decision for them, they have to have some guidance in making one of the most important choices of their live.Despite of that, the educational system does not provide any information regarding the current market, job opportunities and theareas of the future. The curricula does not cover any self reflection subjects. One can only explore their passions, when they know what their passions are. One can only live by their passions when they know what those values are. In order to achieve one’s goals, they need to focus on their strengths over weaknesses. This is possible only if one knows them. The influence of teachers, parents, friends when choosing a career path.Every student should be able to make the decision of their career independently and based on their passion, skills and very good study of the market.

1. Market Needs

There has been never a subject in the Romanian educational cycle that provides the students a space to learn about what opportunities there are on the job market nor to predict future ones.

High School focuses on theoretical support and less on practical experiences. There is the need of a bridge between the idea of a job and the actual job. One can only know if the job fits them only after they have tried it.

The reality about Universities, future jobs, everyday expenses should be aligned with the expectations.

The young adults have a need of widening their education and perspectives, to see since a young age different people and cultures. The need of them being “World Citizens” since a young age is to adapt to the rapidly changing world.

2. Current Trends

Many Romanian students want to apply at Universities abroad and in order to accepted they need to have in their portfolio as many extra curricular activities as possible.

Young people are losing communication skills and social abilities due to the technological era. They would prefer spending time at home playing video-games/browsing the web than outside and socialize

Schools put the emphasis on theoretical knowledge in a lot of different subjects (from English to mathematics and physics) without taking into consideration the children’s passions, strengths and personal values.

Education is not a focus for the government, thus a small amount of money is invested in this sector every year, making it difficult to change the educational system.

3. Root Causes

Overly theoretical and off-dated educational system and lack of career orientation

Not fit for the 21st century, the model is inherited from the industrial era.

Low salaries for the teachers don’t enable them to give professional advice regarding the next steps in life.

Education of the children is left for the school mostly, which lacks the deep development of values and principles that usually happen at home.

The project is designed to inform the High School students about Universities and what they offer, jobs of the future and to help them plan their career based on their passions and personal values. The current Educational System does not include a career orientation plan and Shape is the project that can fill that blanks. It is the second phase of the non-formal educational cycle developed by AIESEC and its target are students from 9th to 12th grade, which means ages from 15 to 18 years old.

We realized that nowadays children are stuck in the theoretical educational system that Romania provides and are not necessarily aware of the qualities or skills they have or might have. With this project, we seek to offer the students sessions held by international volunteers, which will give them a real cross-cultural understanding and will improve their soft skills and English skills, ultimately making them more self-aware. By this they will find out what their passions, what their strengths and weakness are and take them in consideration when choosing the next level of education.

The English language is one the most practical result of the project (something tangible the parents will see, for example), but in reality it is just a tool for the cultural and skills development, which is the core of the project. We want to provide a full complementary, non-formal, educational system for youth, and this project is one of the steps to be taken to fulfill the potential every young person has.

The project idea- social wise

From the AIESEC perspective, this project allows expansion and growth in the volume of realizations. We approach a beneficiary that exists everywhere, children, and we provide them something that any GV Exchange Participant can provide, English classes and cross-cultural experiences. This is easy to grow in number of children achieved and of interns realized, having basically minimum restrictions for the project in terms of the profile of the Interns and the availability of the beneficiary. Companies and Universities can also be easily involved in the structure of the project, providing the students career orientation suggestions but also information about the current job market. This is an advantage for AIESEC because we can sell the project to those companies and thereby make the projects at least sustainable. Furthermore, this project makes sense for AIESEC as astudent-driven organization in terms of positioning the brand in youth. High Schoolers are the next University students, next AIESEC-ers and the next generation of Global Volunteers. Introducing them to the AIESEC culture from a quite early age, makes them build their dreams and future plans around the NGO.

The basic operational idea goes as following: Each local AIESEC office will implement this project with as many High Schools as possible (considering the EP supply and the sustainability of the project). Every EP will be responsible of groups of 15 students with whom they will work together for 6 weeks. The scalability of the project is huge, as we can build more partnerships with different schools, increasing the realization numbers drastically, and thus contribute to the AIESEC vision of peace and fulfilment of humankind’s potential and make a tangible impact in the community.

2. VALUE PROPOSITION: What do we give to each other?

1.Career orientation:

The high school students will have guidance in their future career, while getting to know themselves, their passions, their values, strengths and weaknesses. They will find out what job opportunities are out there and they will evaluate themselves on which one fits them better. Students will get used with the idea of multiculturalism by having sessions with international students. This way they will practice their English and improve their language skills. They will have the chance to discuss about the career opportunities abroad and they will be given a bigger perspective about the way of life, jobs, free time activities and may more. The high school students will also develop themselves, gain soft skills and practical experience which will help them in their future career. They will be prepared to choose what they want to do for the future.
