Geographic Location: Shantou locates in the east of Guangdong Province and in the south of the Hanjiang River Delta. It is adjacent to Raoping County of Chaozhou City to the northeast, Chao'an County of Chaozhou City to the north, Puning County of Jieyang City to the west, Huilai County of Jieyang City to the southwest, and the South China Sea to the southeast. Shantou City is geographically located between 116°14'40" and 117°19'35" East Longitude and between 23°02'33" and 23°38'50" North Latitude. It is 187 nautical miles away from Hong Kong, and 180 nautical miles away from Kaohsiung of Taiwan. Shantou City has always been an important transportation hub, an import and export port and a commodity distribution centre in East Guangdong, South Jiangxi and Southwest Fujian, and known as the "Communication Centre of South China and Gateway of East Guangdong".
Climate
Shantou belongs to the subtropical marine and monsoon climate, which blesses the city with mild
and humid air as well as abundant sunshine. The average temperature per year is about 22C (72F).
The hottest months are July and August with maximum temperatures of 36C (97F) to 40C (104F).
Winter in Shantou is relatively warm with temperatures of above 0C (32F). The climate is thus
pleasant almost all year round, except for in summer. Rain is frequent from April to September.
Dialect
Chaoshan dialect is the prevailing dialect in the Chaoshan area, including Shantou, Chaozhou and
Jieyang. The dialect spoken by Shantou residents is called Shantou dialect. Chaozhou dialect is a
branch of Minnan dialect, which bears great differences from modern Chinese. It not only retains a
lot of phonemes, tones, vocabularies and grammatical features of ancient Chinese and many
substratum words of ancient Taiwan dialect, but also borrows words from Malaysian and English.
Some Hakkas in Shantou also speak Hakka dialect.
Transport
By Air Shantou shares the airport of Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport with Jieyang and Chaozhou
City. The Airport is located at the joint of Paotai Town and Denggang Town, Jieyang City. It is at the
central area of Shantou, Chaozhou and Jieyang and about 28.5km away from the city center area of
Shantou. At present, there are totally about 20 scheduled flights in the airport, and 18 of them are
domestic flights between Chaoshan area and major Chinese cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong,
Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Xian, Wuhan and Changsha. The airport's flight network also covers Bangkok
and Singapore.
Airport Bus
Shantou airport currently has three buses, six CMB, responsible for flight passengers, airport
workers, delayed flights passengers, crew of the shuttle work. Passenger train parked at the

At present, five express bus routes are in operation. The bus ticket office is on the left side of

By Taxi: Taxis are available at Chaoshan Airport. Passengers can take taxis to Shantou, Jieyang and

By Train
The local railway station is one of the most important transport centres of Guangdong Province. You
can get there from many cities, including Guangzhou, Jiujiang, Maoming, Shenzhen, Wuchang and
Nanchang. For the detailed information about the schedules, you can check our China trains. The
station is in the east of the city where you can take city-buses like No.2, No.4, No.6, No.8, No.11 and
No.12 to go to the urban city.

By Long-distance Bus
Many highways of the nation pass through the city, making it quite easy to get to the city by long
distance buses. There are six long distance bus stations, of which the most important is the Shantou
Central Long Distance Bus Station; that is near the railway station on the Taishan Road. Buses in the
station can reach many cities both in Guangdong Province and in other provinces like Fujian,
Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Henan, Anhui, Hainan, Jiangsu, Shandong and Sichuan.
Also, there are buses directly to Shanghai and Macao. After you arrive at the station, many city buses
are at your service to carry you around the city, such as No.2, No.4, No.6, No.8, No.11, No.12, No.31
and No.103.

By Water
Ports in Shantou have ships to many other harbour cities of China. Shantou Port is the most
important one where you can go to Hong Kong, Xiamen, Quanzhou, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Tianjin,
etc. Other ports like Xidi Port, Laiwu Port and Chang Shan Wei Port are just for the mooring of ships
to the counties or tourist destinations near the city.

Getting Around
By City-Bus
In this city, there are many city buses that can carry you to every corner of the city as well as the
nearby tourist destinations. The fare for most of the city buses ranges from CNY1 to CNY2, so you
need to prepare enough changes before you get on the bus. For some buses like No.18, No.25,
No.102 and No.103, the ticket for the whole journey is a little bit expensive, ranging from CNY5 to
CNY6; but the exact fee varies according to the distance you travel. So you need to make sure about
the specific fare if you take these buses.
By Taxi
The taxies have different starting prices according to their logos and qualities in the city. They range
from CNY7 to CNY9 for the first three kilometres. The distance surcharge is about CNY2.8. If you
want to save money, you can choose the motor tricycles that are as convenient as the taxies but
much cheaper, after you bargain with the drivers.
By Ferry
It is very convenient for you to take a ferry to tourist destinations or nearby villages and counties in
Shantou. Xidi Port, Guangchang Port, Chang Shan Wei Port and Laiwu Port all have short cruise lines
around the city. Especially in Guangchang Port on Hai Bin Road, there are two special cruises only in
summer: the Harbor Dinner Cruise and the Harbor Night Cruise. The former starts at 18:40 hours and
the latter starts at 21:10 hours every night. No.9, No.12, No.16, No.17, No.19, No.23, No.25, No.101
and No.103 city buses can bring you there.

Health The following vaccinations and applicable frequencies are recommended for students coming to
China:
Hepatitis A (within the last 10 years)
Hepatitis B (within the last 5 to 10 years)
Japanese B Encephalitis (within the last 3 years)
Tetanus (within the last 10 years)
Polio (within the last 10 years)
Typhoid (once in a lifetime)
Students 55 and older should also have a Pneumococcal vaccine
Required by the Chinese Government, all international students must have medical insurance when
studying in China. For your convenience and safety, students are strongly encouraged to purchase
their own insurance before coming to China. However, if you are not covered by any type of
insurance when you come to China, you can buy foreign student insurance provided by Chinese
insurance companies with the guidance of the school's Foreign Students Administration Office.
A health examination is required for students holding an X Visa for those studying in China for more
than 6 months. (F visa holders studying for less than 6 months do not need to undergo this test).
Health Examination in Your Own Country
If you are examined in your home country, the exam must take place in a public hospital within 6
months before coming to China. The check-up form must:
· Be the same as that used in China (obtained from the Chinese Embassy)
· Contain your photo
· Bear the hospital's official stamp
· Include doctor's signature in section containing results of examination, with the original laboratory
test reports attached
Health Examination in Beijing
You may also undergo the physical examination after you arrive in Beijing. Those who pass the
examination, and when confirmed by the Beijing Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, will
receive a Health Certificate. This is a procedure that your school will assist you with.
Prohibited and Restricted Imports --The following items cannot be brought into the PRC:
(1) Weapons, articles that appear to be or are replicas of weapons, ammunitions and explosives,
including fireworks.
(2) Counterfeit currency and fake securities.
(3) Printed articles or films, photos, phonograph records, movies, audio tapes, video tapes, laser
optic disks, omputer memory media and other articles which are considered socially disruptive or
harmful to China's politics, economy, culture or morality.
(4) Poisons and poisonous liquids.
(5) Opium, morphine, heroin, marijuana and other narcotics or hallucinogens.
(6) Animal and plant products that carry dangerous germs, pests and bacteria.
(7) Food, drugs and other articles which are harmful to the health of human beings or animals or
which come from infectious disease-stricken regions or which are known to be disease-spreading.
--The following items are subject to restricted entry:
(1) Radio transceivers and secure communication devices.
(2) Cigarettes and alcohol.
(3) Endangered species of fauna and flora (including chemical and scientific specimens) as well as
their seeds and reproductive materials.
(4) Amounts over RMB 6, 000 in Chinese Yuan Renminbi.

--The following items may be subject to restricted exit:
(1) Precious metals, including gold, silver, and platinum.
(2) Chinese national currency in amounts in excess of RMB 6,000.
(3) Foreign currencies and securities in foreign currencies.
(4) Radio transceivers and secure communication devices.
(5) Rare Chinese medicinal herbs and materials.
(6) Antiques.
Using your mobile in China There are two ways to use your mobile in China:
(1) Visitors who wish to directly use phone numbers assigned by their domestic telecommunication
operators should make sure that "international roaming service" has been turned on by their local
provider before their entry to China.
Your domestic mobile telecommunication operator should provide an agreement on international
roaming services with the local operator that you wish to use in China (which might be China
Mobile). Your international roaming service charges will be collected according to the applicable
charging rates as specified by your domestic mobile telecommunication operator. If your domestic
operator and the local operator in Beijing haven't signed a roaming agreement, the international
roaming service will be unavailable through your domestic phone number.
(2) Visitors entering China can buy SIM phone cards and pre-paid phone cards in Beijing to enjoy all
the services provided by local mobile phone operators.
If you wish to use your own phone from home, make sure to bring a compatible GSM/GPRS
900/1800 dual-frequency mobile phone (the phone must be unlocked). You may purchase the pre-
paid "Easy-Own" SIM phone cards and recharge cards provided by China Mobile to enjoy convenient
mobile telecommunication services from China Mobile.
Visitors entering China can also buy (or rent) mobile phone terminals and buy SIM phone cards and
pre-paid phone cards in China, they can then enjoy all the services provided by local mobile
operators.
Currently, the "Easy-Own" pre-paid SIM phone cards sold at the China Mobile Service locations
within Beijing have a unit price of 60RMB/card, including a credit of 50RMB. The pre-paid phone
cards of China Mobile are available in a variety of price values. Once your pre-paid SIM card has run
out of credit, you can conveniently recharge credit with a pre-paid recharge card.
Beijing has two main mobile phone service operators, China Mobile, and China Unicom. For more
details from China Mobile, please call China Mobile's Beijing customer service hotline at +86 10
10086, or visit China Mobile's website.
If you cannot use your mobile phone charger you can probably buy one (likely less than 50 RMB) at a
local mobile phone store.
For Irish passport holders who apply for any type of Chinese visa, the following is
required: one completed visa application form, one recent photograph for passport,
passport valid up to at least six months with blank pages.
Non-Irish passport holders are supposed to apply for any type of Chinese visa
in the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in their home countries, with the
exception that one is residing and working in Ireland. Besides the above-
mentioned documents, the residence and working permission are required.
More documents are required for the following specific visa:
1. L visa for tourism or visiting relative
For the purpose of holiday, tourism, single or double entry tourist visa is required
which is normally valid for 3 months from the date of issue. Necessary travel
information, such as the two-way flight details and itinerary, is required.
For travel to Tibet, an entry permit issued by the Tibetan Tourist Bureau is required.

number:0086-891-6834313). The applicant is supposed to contact an
authorized Chinese Tour Operator to organize an entry permit before applying for a
Chinese visa.
To visit relatives, single or double-entry visiting visa is required which is normally
valid for 3 months from the date of issue. Proof of kinship, such as the birth
certificate, marriage certificate, is required. But the applicants who were born in
China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) as shown in the passport are
exempt from this proof.
Please note that depending on specific application, visa officer may require further
documentation or interview.
4. X visa for studying in China
For Study in China, a student visa is required. The applicant shall provide the original
version and photocopy of JW-201 or JW-202 form issued by the Ministry of
Education of China, the original letter of admission from a Chinese University /
College and the original version and photocopy of health certificate (the form is
available on our website).

Visa collection
It takes 3-5 working days by regular service to process a visa application once the
application is accepted. And it takes 2-3 working days by express service to process
a visa application, which is the quickest. No express Visa can be granted on the
same day.
Visa fees
Please pay in bank draft issued by Bank of Ireland or Allied Irish Bank, or post order
issued by An Post payable to the Chinese Embassy in Ireland upon collection, the
denomination of the currency being euro only.

each applicant.

Express service is not available for U.S passport holders.

The visa can be applied and collected in person or through someone entrusted by
applicant.
Duration of stay of a visa varies. When necessary, extension of duration of stay of a
visa is possible.
Foreign tourists are not permitted to assume employment in China.
No vaccination is required for short-term visitors (less than 3 months) except for
those who come from/via epidemic areas.
A health certificate is required for those who stay in China for more than one year.
