News for Calvert County Government Employees

New Voting System Debuts In October 2014, the Maryland State Board of Elections selected a new voting system for 2016. The system produces a voter-verifiable paper record - a "paper trail" - of each voter's selections.

During early voting and on Election Day, voters will be given a pre-printed paper ballot. Voters will mark the paper ballots by hand at a voting booth, review their marked paper ballots and insert them into a tabulation device.

A short video demonstration of the new system is available on the Calvert County Board of Elections Web page.

The county commissioners last

week recognized Office Assistant III Debra Nevin as Employee of the Month for February.

Debra was recognized for her attention to detail when being tasked to transition the Calvert County Sheriff ’s Office “Request for Training” program to the Administrative & Judicial Services Bureau. Debra reviewed the program and determined the process was inefficient and quickly took the initiative to streamline the process and create a paperless system.

Because of her efforts, the Sheriff ’s Office implemented the new

Employers Are Looking for StudentsThe county Parks and Recreation Division will hold a Student Job Fair at the Harriet Elizabeth Brown Interim Community Center in Prince Frederick Wednesday, March 23. High school and college students are encouraged to tighten up their resumes and attend the event from 1-3 p.m.

“Every year I am so impressed by how prepared and professional the students are who attend these fairs,” explained Paul Lundberg, parks and recreation assistant coordinator who is in charge of the fair. “The business owners who return to the Student Job Fair year after year tell us they get more quality recruiting done in these two hours than they get done all year long.”

The community center is located at 901 Dares Beach Road in Prince Frederick.

Personnel Perspectives Sick Leave Donation Program An employee may donate sick or annual leave to another employee with a known sick leave need who has exhausted all leave balances. The purpose of the donation is to provide income continuation for the duration of the illness or disability. Donated leave may only be used for an authorized incapacitating illness or disability of an employee taking leave for themselves or to care for an ailing family member. The department/agency may only approve the use of donated leave when all leave balances of any type are exhausted (annual, personal, sick and compensatory). If it is determined that the use of donated leave jeopardizes the county's best interests, the department head may curtail donations.

Donations must be voluntary and made from accrued leave. Donated leave may not be recovered once used, unless reimbursed by worker’s compensation. The donating employee’s name is not to be revealed. If the donating employee wishes to make their donation known, they can personally advise the receiving employee.

Upon separation from county service, eligible employees may elect to donate all or part of their annual or sick leave to an employee with a known sick leave need. Employees who donate leave hours upon separation forfeit any leave payout of those donated hours.

Leave donations may be requested by the employee in need of the leave or from a co-worker on behalf of the employee. Requests may be sent via email to specific employees (not a county wide email and not from the supervisor of the employee in need). Unused Leave Donation Forms will be returned to the donating employee once the receiving employee returns to work and no longer requires time off for the illness or disability. Donations for a different, unrelated illness or disability must be submitted on a separate Leave Donation Form.

Job Openings Information is available on the county website or by calling the Personnel Office at extension 2359.
