• Finally we read the first paragraph or so Here we are looking for the research-
ers to make
their
case for the imp ortance of the
research
If we cannot find a
case after reading a few sentences or paragrap hs then we have reason to be
concerned about
th e
valué
and
clarity
of the
article.
After
we
have looked
at
these three pieces
we
should have
a
good idea about
the
article. Do we want to read it? Could it be importan t for our own work? If we decide
th e
article
is
worth reading then

how to
address
its
m eat—its main
points and findings. As we move through the next five chapters we will be looking
at each major p art of the article as we find it.

It is now t ime to prac t ice some of the insights an d
skil ls
yo u have explored in
this
chapter:
•
First
of
all there
are
four t raining ar t ic les
and
four real ar t ic les whose abst racts
have not been
coded.
Try your
hand
at coding these abstracts.
Compare your
results with
those of your classmates.
• Take a look at the three to four ar t ic les you
had
gathered previously. Now tha t
you have looked at their titles and
openings
take some t ime and
code
their
abstracts as well.
Given
that you un derstand their content áreas does this help
you code their abstracts as well? Share your
results
wi th your
c lassmates.
• Finally try your hand at
writing
an
abstract yo urself.
Try to use all of the
coding
catego r ies as you créate your abstract and try to keep ¡ t under 125 words.
Yo u can m ake up any kind of study you l ike. When you are done share your
results
wi th your c lassmates.
