    To help you navigate your way around the massive city of Shanghai, we have created a mini-guide to help international students.

    Shanghai is a huge city, measured at 6,350 km2. With a massive population of 23 million people (rising rapidly every year), Shanghai is the biggest city in China and across the world (largest city proper measured by population).

    As the economic heart of China, Shanghai has invested heavily in the public transport network. Shanghais highly developed transport system includes buses, taxis, planes, high speed trains and the metro.

    With 329 metro stations and over 1,000 bus lines, travelling around Shanghai is super easy and convenient - if you know how, that is!

    So to help you learn how to navigate Shanghai, youll find transport information and tips about how to get around the city in this mini-guide.

    TRANSPORT CARD

    Traveling on the Shanghai transport system is very easy and convenient, but there is one thing you need to do first: buy a transport card.

    The transport card can be used to pay for all forms of public transport within Shanghai (except for trains).

    You can buy a transport card from any metro station. Go to the service desk to buy or top-up your transport card.

    BUY THE CARD

    Go to the service counter and say this (click to play):

    20 RMB (deposit)It costs 20 RMB to buy the card, but you still need to add travel money.

    You can get your deposit money back if you return the card.

    AIRPORTS

    For most of our international students, the airports are the first part of the transport system they will experience.

    There are two main airports for international flights in Shanghai:

    Pudong International Airport is located in the south-east of Shanghai, and it is the busiest airport.

    Hongqiao International Airport is located in the west of Shanghai.

    Taxi: about 120 RMB to our campuses

    Taxi: about 200 RMB to our campuses

    We offer a free pick-up service for 5 or more students who arrive at the same time. We also offer a paid pick-up service.

    Go to our pick-up page to book (at least 10 days before).

    METRO

    The Metro system makes traveling around Shanghai easy and quick, which is why its so popular. More than 8 million people use the Metro everyday!

    With 329 metro stations and 14 metro lines, the Metro is the best way to get around the city quickly and conveniently.

    You can pay by transport card or buy a metro ticket.

    Usually 3 - 5 RMB per journey(depends on distance)

    The Shanghai Metro has security check-points at every sta-tion. Its mainly to stop people bringing dangerous items that can cause fires, damage or injury. If you have a big bag, you will be asked to put it through the scanning machine.

    From a Western-perspective, taxis in Shanghai are a very cheap way of getting around the city.

    BLACK TAXIS

    Please dont use the black taxis (, hi ch). These are unlicensed taxis and they are famous for scamming people, both Chinese and non-Chinese people.

    Sometimes a taxi with a green light will ignore you and drive by. Why? Someone used a phone app to book it!

    Da Zhong Taxi now have free Wi-Fi in many cars To use this app, you need to pay more money by offering the driver a tip (5 - 15 RMB).

    BUSES

    With over 1,000 bus lines operating in Shanghai, taking the bus is a cheap and convenient way to get around the city throughout the day and night.

    1 - 2 RMB per journey

    You can only pay with 1 RMB coins or your transport card.

    Zhongshan Beiyi Road - Wuchuan Road

    TRAVEL BETWEEN CAMPUSES

    If you need to travel between the main campuses, you can easily take the 537 bus. It needs around 25 minutes.

    BUS STOPS

    The buses will announce the names of stops in both Chinese and English, so you shouldnt miss your stop.

    Finding your bus stop on the timetable is easy. The bus stops are named after the streets/corners they are on.

    If you need to travel outside of Shanghai, then youll want to know about trains. Luckily, Shanghai is a huge transport hub, with trains going to every corner of China.

    OFFLINE BOOKING

    You can buy tickets offline by going to the train station or ticket offices. To find a ticket office, search for (hu ch pio di shu ch).

    ONLINE BOOKING

    You can book your tickets online, by going to the official ticket website, www.12306.cn.

    You need to use your passport as your identification number. Take your booking reference and your passport to the train station or a ticket office to collect the tickets.

    Collecting tickets from a ticket office costs 5 RMB / ticket.

    HIGH SPEED TRAINS

    China is a huge country, and traveling to other distant cities can take a long time. Luckily, China has invested heavily in high-speed trains.

    For high-speed travel, use any of the following trains:

    C Train (, chng j gos) 350 km/hD Train (, dng ch), 250 km/hG Train (, go ti), 350 km/h

    You must take the passport/identification card that you used to purchase the ticket when using trains. Dont forget your identification otherwise you might not be able to go!
