Last week our Eco Action commitee of teachers and students planned activities for a fantastic Earth Day. We are sure that you agree that children knowing about how to protect our planet and making changes to what they do helps to widen their minds and see themselves as responsible action takers. We had a wonderful whole school picnic and every child and teacher came together to share food in the beautiful sunshine - what a perfect day! Our young Eco Action members then worked together with our Grade 1 students to play games they had created by recycling products. Thank you for all of your support. We raised a huge amount which will be donated to The Million Trees Project. Each day this week we have hosted a special Science Fair for all. I have really enjoyed welcoming students into school in the mornings who have been carrying big boards of their ideas and big bags of all kinds of potions and materials. The projects have been delightful to see and there have been so many creative ideas. Thank you to Mr Chris and Ms Linda who have been busy, busy, busy. We would also like to thank you for supporting your children in their learning outside of school. So now brings the start of the Labour Holiday. On March 22nd , it was our great pleasure to have Mr. WANG DONG, the

parent of our Hongqiao International Stream G4 student, to share his

knowledge and experience of news interviews and editorial with us.WANG

DONG used to work as a journalist in well-known international broadcast

media such as the United Nations News & Media Division, HKS and ESPN.

He shared many stories about news editing with details behind the scenes.

The students and teachers were very much enjoying it with lots of

learnings.

Human bodies are made up of body

systems that keep people alive

In Unit 4 our Grade 3 students have been

learning about the many wonderful body

systems that keep us alive. We explored

these systems in experiments and looked at

them in more depth through scientific drawings;

we realized how the human body systems

worked together in a holistic way. With the

focus on data handling and graphing, students

had multiple opportunities to demonstrate their

findings from research and experiments. We

were delighted to see students collaborate with

their team members, form strong hypotheses

and gather reliable proof to support their ideas.

Students listened to the school nurse talk about

maintaining a healthy body and a parent

volunteered to share her knowledge about the

importance of eating a “rainbow colored”

helping.

All of our learning lead up to our glorious

Science Fair where students were able to share

their knowledge with the rest of the school and

the greater community.

I used scrap material to make pockets.

Each pocket has a little wooden label on

it; eco, help and earth. I also used dried

leaves for extra decorations.

Sophia 3E

My grandma helped me sow this bag.

She first opened one side of the bag,

then she was able to sow it by hand. I

colored-in the heart with turmeric to

get a bright yellow shade.

Chloe L 3E

Students in 3E class got really excited to use natural ways to

decorate in an ECO during the lead up to Earth Day celebrations.

So great to see students thinking creatively and even learning

from the expertise of grandparents!

I used honey mustard sauce from the

kitchen and a medicine called ‘propolis’ and coffee to make a sunflower.

Julie 3E

I smashed vegetables to make the green

land on the earth and for the blue ocean

I used blue flowers to color the water.

On April 10th and 11th, the Grade 4 students and teachers went for a field trip to a teagarden in Hangzhou. This trip was not only a boost of students’ interest in learning theupcoming Plant UOI unit, but also a warm-up for their mother tongue inquiry unit TeaCulture.

The students enjoyed the spring scenery along the way while taking the short trek to the teamountain. Under the guidance of local tea farmers, they then started to pick tea leaves andexplore as much as they could. What enjoyable learning!

After lunch, the students went to the local tea farmer’s house to observe and experiencethe whole production process of making Lonjing tea , which is one of the famous Chinesegreen tea. Each student also brought back a bag of tea as a souvenir and gift for family.

A huge amount of students said this trip has inspired their huge interest in further learningabout Chinese tea culture. They expected to have a more tight connection with Chineseculture through the inquiry learning of this oriental tea leaf.

Brilliant April---WSC 2018 Regional Round in Shanghai

The bustling regional round of World Scholar’s Cup Shanghai has reached its splendid conclusion. There were 49 SUIS-GuBei students who attended the Shanghai Round on April 14th and 15th in Shanghai Pinghe School. This year, the theme of the competition is “An Entangled World”. Scholars had the chance to learn knowledge beyond the textbooks, such as Diplomatic History, the Science of Memory, Human Relationships, Voices of the Inseparable and Black Markets. In addition, they got the chance to dauntlessly deal with arts and music regarding “Braving Distance” and so much more. Scholars competed in 4 different events: Debating, Scholar’s Challenge, Collaborative Writing and Scholar’s Bowl. We achieved excellent results with 9 trophies and more than 200 medals. May the students of SUIS create wonders once again in Kuala Lumpur Global Round of 2018, we will see you again.
