The CJHS debate team hosted its first debate

scrimmage of the year this past Tuesday. Over

forty students from Glenbrook North, New

Trier, and CJHS participated in two different

debate events: Public Forum debates, which are

two-on-two, and Lincoln/Douglas debates,

which are one-on-one. The debaters each

participated in three different debate rounds,

affirming and negating the two different

topics. Jonathan Schrag explains, "Both of the

topics we discussed are extremely complex--

also very interesting and current! By focusing

on a new important topic each month, we are

able to expand our knowledge on these central

topics in a really deep and sophisticated way.

By debating both sides of each topic, we can

really explore and thereby find what our

personal position on each of these topics

is." Head coach Jonathan Horowitz reports,

"Everybody had a great time, and our debaters

got a chance to experience some very tough

inter-school competition." The debate would

like to thank the New Trier and GBN coaches as

well as the many staff members at CJHS who

helped make this event possible. Well done

to Lincoln/Douglas captains Jacob Erlichman

and Elan Karoll, and to Public Forum captains

Eli Krule and Jonathan Schrag.

P.O. Corner

The P.O. is pleased to offer the gift card or "Scrip/Gelt" program, designed to help families earn money to apply towards their students' Shabbatonim, Junior Class trip, and Senior Israel Experience. By purchasing gift cards through the school for vendors where you ordinarily shop (groceries, gas, household items, etc), a percentage of what you spend each time will be placed in your family's account to be used for these trips. Gift card orders are placed every

Thursday. Please contact Sheri Sandrof at [email protected] or 847.324.3723 with any questions.

Grandparents and Special Friends Association

Help us get in touch with some very special people in your students' lives! Please reply here with the names, addresses, and emails of their grandparents and/or special friends so we can forward them a membership form to join our "Grandparents and Special Friends Organization". If you provide an email address, they can also begin receiving CJHS e-news. Contact Sheri Sandrof at 847.324.3723 or [email protected] with any questions.

Cross Country Thunders On

CJHS Cross Country is again ruling the

road with two spectacular first-place

finishes at Mather and Lake Forest! Junior

sprinter Ranan Vales reports from the field,

"CJHS Cross Country spirit has been running

high throughout the past two weeks with

continual chorusing and an immense amount of

energy. The crowds always know when CJHS is

in the field, due to their conspicuous Jewish

pride and continual desire to bellow Hebrew

hymns at the top of their lungs."

Sophomore Zev Mishell broke the sophomore

CJ record for a two mile race at Mather last

week with a time of 10 minutes and 58

seconds, with superstar Yoni Maltsman two

seconds behind him. Junior Zach Becker

improved his Mather time by 15 seconds, while

Coby Drexler thundered past the finish line a

full minute and a half ahead of his last race.

Exuberant high spirits with singing and

congratulations were appreciated by all the

runners and spectators, except the security

guard at the Mather locker rooms, who

instructed the impromptu athletic choir to "keep

it down"!

Page 9: Shanah Tovah to All

Up at Lake Forest this past Tuesday, CJHS

came in first of seven schools and cheered on

the women runners with a hardy Hava Nagila,

much to the delight of Chicago Latin coach

Adam Gilman, who appreciated the extra

singing and dancing. Yoni Maltsman set the

record for the fastest 3 mile at the Lake Forest

Academy meet with a time of 18:18.

Freshman Hadar Halivni improved her three-

mile time by one minute and 50

seconds. Despite the blistering heat and the

strangely tall prairie grass obstructing the path

to victory, our runners charged through to the

end still holding their heads high.

Freshman Arielle Saxton finished second in

the girls race against Ida Crown. Ranan Vales,

Zev Mishell, Yoni Maltsman, Akiva Stein,

and Jonah Glick-Unterman won the varsity

race by finishing in third through seventh place.

Ari Rosenthal, Sol Triester, and Liam

Lynch won the JV race coming in first, second,

and third! Trophy in hand, the team danced the

horah and sang David Melech Yisrael,

celebrating their victory at the top of Wood

Oaks ski hill. (Thanks to star mom Mrs. Amy

Mishell for the celebratory brownies!)

Arava Interns

On Tuesday, Hagar Ben Shlomo from Herzliya

and Asem Magableh from Irbid in northern

Jordan joined JNF shlicha Tal Shaked to speak

to Va'ad Israel. As students at Israel's Arava

Institute in the Negev, they both began by

saying, "Nature has no borders." The Institute

not only educates world-class environmental

scientists but also serves as a microcosm for

how a region could look when people across

borders recognize each other as colleagues and

friends. The Va'ad Israel members had the

opportunity to talk to these interns about

environmental issues and how learning with

"The Other" transformed their understanding

that people across a border were people whom

Page 11: Shanah Tovah to All

they simply had not yet met. There is suffering

on both sides of that border. There is joy on

both sides of that border. As Asem

explained. "One day, I'll be looking to solve the

water problems of Jordan and Hadar will be

looking to solve the water problems of Israel.

And we will know each other when we pick up

the phone to speak about the same water

sources."

A Taste of Torah: Yom Kippur

In celebrating Yom Kippur, we examine the

nature of humanity itself. Who am I, at my

rawest, without dressing myself in the material of society?

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel puts this in

stark terms:

"We are all failures. At least one day a year

we should recognize it. I have failed so

often; I am sure those present here have

also failed. We have much to be contrite

about; we have missed opportunities. The

sense of inadequacy ought to be at the

very center of the day... We must develop

this contrition or sense of

embarrassment... In this not knowing, in

this sense of embarrassment, we open the

wells of creativity."

Page 17: Shanah Tovah to All

The Tannaitic Midrash Pesikta D'Rav Kahane

presents the following parable (Piska 24):

"The common person thinks it is a disgrace for

her to use broken vessels. But God does not ...

All of God's interactions are with broken

vessels-- "God is close to broken hearts"

(Psalms 34:19); "(God is) the healer of broken

hearts" (Psalms 116:3); "God does not despise

a broken and a contrite heart," (Psalms 51:19).

For this reason Hosea warns Israel and says to

them, "Return, Israel, unto the HaShem your

God; for you have stumbled in your iniquity,"

(Hosea 14:2).

The Midrash suggests that it is natural to be

flawed. God wants us to be broken, not

because we try to be inadequate at any

particular moment, but because that was how

we were created.

This holiday season I am particularly conscious

of the love of my friends and family. I feel

blessed to interact dynamically with the people

I love, often exposing our own vulnerabilities.

For this Yom Kippur, as we explore our own

iniquities, may we have the courage to note

these struggles during the rest of the year, too.

It is from this place that humanity creates

worlds, as well.
