When my brother, guitarist Mark Ghent, and I were kids, we turned the basement of our Chicago home into a variety show venue. We went around the neighbourhood and drummed up audience members and charged them 5 cents to see the show: a combination of music, dance, circus routines, and novelty acts. Today, I’m still staging home concerts at my summer venue “Rita’s Parlour”, in my Picton, Ontario home.

One of my recent guest artists was Illinois-born, Toronto-based Bill Westcott. Dubbed the “Barrel House Commander”, Bill is a living direct link to piano music born in the South and made famous in one of The Great Migration’s destinations: Chicago. To hear Bill play is to hear early blues come alive with an authenticity that is rarely heard today. One of his specialties is the music of Little Brother Montgomery, with whom he studied.

Little Brother was born Eurreal Wilford Montgomery on April 18, 1906 in the sawmill town of Kentwood Louisiana. He started playing professionally in African American lumber and turpentine camps in Louisiana and Mississippi. As a 22-year-old, Little Brother relocated to Chicago. It was here that he started to record. He has several surviving recordings, mainly on the Folkways label. He also recorded for Bluesville, Delmark, and Genes. In 2013, Montgomery was posthumously inducted to the Blues Hall of Fame.

The following is a transcript of my brief interview with Bill before a live audience at “Rita’s Parlour” in July 2014. Transcription was provided by Emma Cava.

RdG: (to the audience) So, Bill started to play the piano when he was eight years old.

Westcott: That sounds right.

RdG: Yeah. And you grew up in rural Illinois. Your parents were farmers?

Westcott: No, ah, my parents were technocrats. My mother was a...kindergarten teacher, and my dad was a chemist. And they worked for the oil refinery in Wood River, Illinois. And, um, so we lived right on the edge of town, actually. Sort of. Farms in the back yard, and suburbs in the front yard...that kind of thing.

RdG: Oh. Did you have a piano in the house?

Westcott: Oh yes. My parents got me a piano when they saw me watching piano players on television. And…after I saw someone--it was probably Steve Allen--I would sit on the couch...with my knees up, and I would go 'bang-bang-bang-bang-bang’, and sing “ding da ding da ding”, like that, you know. I remember doing it, too. And, uh, so they took the hint and they bought me a piano.

RdG: Beautiful. Did you have formal instruction at that time?

Voxxy Lady

Westcott: Oh yeah...I had lessons from a woman in town named Ruth Cassing, who was a very, uh, interesting woman...There were two piano teachers in that town. One of them was the wife of the Superintendent of Schools, and the other one was Ruth Cassing, who was known for getting kicked out of church jobs for showing up drunk on Sunday. [audience laughter] And then she’d get another church job, and she’d be good for, I don’t know, a year, or two years. And then she’d fall off the wagon, show up drunk, and rag the hymns. And...then they’d fire her...But she was a much more interesting teacher. She taught me classical, of course, and a lot of it. But she also realized that I was kind of visually impaired. She’d give me a piece to learn and I’d learn it, and then I’d come away filling out chords that weren’t there. You know, and just making more of it than it was. And she realized I was an ear player. And ah, so she taught me old turn-of-the-century songs like “After the Ball”, and stuff like that. With simple chords, right?...[she] would give me a new song every other week or so, and I’d learn how to play it. So that went right along with the classical training.

RdG: How did you get to Little Brother Montgomery?

Westcott: Little Brother Montgomery was a very important blues recording artist. Starting around 1929 in Chicago...all through the Depression, made a lot of records. Was one of the big stars of singing blues pianists. And then the war came along, and everything changed. The electric guitar came along and kind of changed blues, you know, fundamentally. Or at least, how the blues ensemble worked. [Little Brother] resurfaced again in the '50s and '60s when the blues revival was happening... Young college men, often ivy-leaguers but not always--would take a sudden interest in the old music, right? The music that black people made 30, 40, 50 years ago...These people were very scholarly in their approach, and they dug up all the old records, and started making discographies, and interviewing the old guys and getting them to play, and recording them and making, you know, records out of it and selling them in these limited-editions. And it became, a real...small business, reviving the blues. And Little Brother got in on that...By the end of the late 70s, I was a graduate student at the University of Illinois in Champagne, Illinois, and hanging out with some jazz musicians, and playing with a guy named Ron Dewor, who is this wonderful sax player. He’d play bebop and post-bebop--you

Music Money: Ontario Government has announced the recipients of the first year of the Ontario Music Fund. Hon. Michael Coteau, Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport, announced the recipients of the first year of the Ontario Music Fund, as well as the official l a u n c h of Ontario’s live music portal, http://ontariolivemusic.ca/.

The first year of the Ontario Music Fund, which is administered by the Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC), is providing 108 grants to artists and music organizations that produce, distribute, and promote Canadian music and artists. The TBS benefitted from a grant of $35,000. 108 grants totaling $15 million were distributed to 108 different music artists and organizations.

You can see the whole list here: http://www.omdc.o n . c a / A s s e t s /

Industry+Init iatives/English/OMF/OMF+2013-14+Successful+Recipients.pdf. The Kathleen Wynne government has allocated $45 million over three years, $15 million a year, to the Ontario Music Fund.

Minister Coteau also announced the official launch of Ontario’s live music portal,OntarioLiveMusic.ca, which was developed by Music Canada under contract to the Ontario government. The site is a comprehensive and reliable source for information on live music in Ontario, including concert listings and venue promotions. As part of Ontario’s Live Music Strategy, the portal will promote live music in Ontario to boost concert attendance, visitor spending, and economic impact. All musicians and venues are encouraged to submit their gigs so that the government can see that it is being put to good use.

This funding helped underwrite the recent meeting of Canadian Blues Festivals hosted by the TBS with the mandate to

create a Blues Festival Network in Canada. Larry Kurtz, Founder & Artistic Director of the Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival said, "The meeting of Ontario Blues Festivals was a great opportunity to get to know fellow festival organizers and share ideas. The information provided about government funding programs was very helpful. This was an excellent first step in understanding how we can work together and support each other." Chris Murphy, Artistic Director of Quai du Vin Reds Whites and Blues Festival in Sparta reported ,"It was great to see everyone in the same room. We could have swapped stories until midnight...It is rare that festival organizers get to spend time with each other."

There will also be a series of career development workshops funded by Music Canada including sessions on “Touring, Gigging and Making a Living on the Road“ (September 30, 12-1pm at Silver Flex Studio, Artscape Youngplace – 180 Shaw St.,) “Partnership and Collaboration: Music Is a Team Sport“ (October 1, 12pm-4:30pm Guelph City Hall, 1 Carden Street, Guelph); “Publicity, Promotion & Music: The Final Touch“ (October 7, 2014, 12-1pm, Silver Flex Studio, Artscape Youngplace – 180 Shaw St.) and “Labels: A Brave New World of A&R and Record Deals (October 14, 12-1pm at Silver Flex Studio, Artscape Youngplace – 180 Shaw St).

Jack de Keyzer Voodoo Boogie Blue Star/Indie Pool

Jack de Keyzer’s legions of fans will tell you that his live shows are what make them his fans. What a treat then to have more recordings from the one that earned him the Blues JUNO in 2010. Voodoo Boogie is Part II from The Corktown Tavern in Hamilton. He opens with the title song, a re-worked “Mojo Boogie” by J.B. Lenoir that just smokes, Jack’s guitar pyrotechnics get the audience, and us, off to a rocking start. Dave ‘Groove Dr.’ McMorrow provides sterling support on piano while Alan Duffy & Danny Lockwood provide that solid foundation. Up next is a major highlight, the grinding, slide-driven “If You Were My Woman”, with bass and guitar in perfect synch. On the recording, Jack chose to fade this performance after five minutes, I wish it had gone on much longer. Bob Dylan’s “All along The Watchtower” gets a slower, jazzy performance, which not too surprisingly takes off from the Hendrix version. Needless to say this one showcases Jack’s guitar and his wah-wah pedal. Jack’s own “Pleasure is my Business” is a shuffle taken at a mid-tempo clip, a change of pace that features an organ solo from McMorrow. “Rock Till We Drop” is a Chuck Berry-style rocker that is another highlight, with pounding piano from McMorrow and furious solos from Jack. Not enough can be said here about Al Duffy on bass and Danny Lockwood on drums, they put this engine into overdrive. The Muddy Waters version of “You Shook Me” is a de Keyzer specialty, taken nice & slow before the Fleetwood Mac version of “Shake Your Moneymaker” rocks it up once again. A jazzy Jack original, “Cinderella” with Chris Murphy on sax and David Colter on

is otherwise an album of entertaining songs. Laura Greenberg, his regular bass player and Jamie Holmes his drummer appear on four of the songs, and they performed with him at Monarch’s Pub for the CD release here on September 18. The official release date is October 7, by which date, he’ll be on a western swing followed by some California shows, all are listed at www.jw-jones.com. Those American dates should be getting a much higher profile thanks to this excellent album. I hope you were able to see him host the MBA Show last January, I hope he can do that again some time.

Rita Chiarelli Music From The Big House DVD Mongrel Media

A little known aspect of Rita’s career was ten years of journeys to the infamous Angola Prison in Louisiana to learn from & work with the inmates there. The prison recordings she had heard in the past made a great impact on her. The plan for this trip was to not only perform for the inmates and their families but also to perform with the bands the convicts had formed behind bars. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker Bruce McDonald brought his crew. The movie he and producer Erin Faith Young made is a masterpiece. After about ten minutes of both Angola’s history and the story of how Rita got to do this, we get rehearsals and interviews with the inmate musicians. Rita’s rapport with the inmates is immediately obvious. Her interviews allow the inmates to tell their stories without preconceptions. Life behind bars has seldom been so effectively conveyed, remorse and healing so well expressed. The concert sequences show how

The hard-touring JW-Jones keeps putting out better and better albums. Maybe the one leads to the other. Not to put his earlier albums in a lesser light, for they were all very good, but JW-Jones has none other than Tom Hambridge on board here and has placed this with a major blues label. Recorded in Nashville, mostly with their fine session players, there is less emphasis on personal-interviews-as-songs and more on straight ahead tunes. We begin in stellar fashion with one written by Hambridge & Colin Linden. “Love Times Ten” is a pounding Stones-style rocker and perfect as the opener and first single. Reese Wynans’s keyboards are every bit a match for JW’s guitar, I can see this one staying in his set list for some time. Bobby Parker’s “Watch Your Step” is taken at an even faster clip, with Hambridge hammering those tom-toms. “(The Blues Keep) Coming After Me” is a gorgeous Hambridge slow blues, with the ‘blues’ also being the men in blue. JW-Jones’ earlier albums were known for their guest star appearances, here he’s taken to paying tribute instead: to Magic Sam on “Magic West Side Boogie”- a monster of a guitar workout and to Jimmie Vaughan, with “What Would Jimmie Do”, written with Hambridge, featuring some dead-on Jimmie guitar work. Buddy Guy’s “What’s Inside of You” gets some virtuosic Buddy Guy-style guitar but JW style vocals. The album closer, “Cocaine Boy”, is an ambitious and serious JW-Hambridge song with heavily FX-laden vocals and guitar, presumably meant to highlight that perception-altering lifestyle. The verses helpfully delve into some of the deeper problems behind the addictive behaviour. Perhaps intended as a warning to someone he knows, it stands out on what

talented these musicians are and how well they take to Rita. By the time of the “Midnight Special” finale, the inmates are human beings who have made mistakes, not unknowns far removed from society. Rita expresses her own emotions in words well here too but “These Four Walls”, the highlight of the soundtrack, says it even better and the video is included here. There are also concert extras, only some of which are on the soundtrack CD. After the movie’s initial screenings, it aired on CBC’s Documentary Channel but if you happened to catch it there you saw a heavily edited version. You owe it to yourself to see it in full. If you’re not near a store or if you’d like to arrange a special screening for your next event, go to www.ritachiarelli.com.

Diana Braithwaite & Chris Whiteley Blues Stories Big City Blues

With Scrap Metal Blues on Electro-Fi, the Blues Suite Concert, Sugar & Gold from a couple of years ago and now Blues Stories, the much-expanded Underground Railroad Music Festival and Diana’s return to The Women’s Blues Revue, they are one very busy couple. The thread connecting all these activities is Diana’s heritage as a descendant of an Underground Railroad family. The music they write and record is firmly rooted in that tradition. We get underway here with a gospel a capella “Rocks and Gravel” that harkens back to earliest days. Diana’s and daughter Kala’s voices blend beautifully. Some John Lee Hooker boogie forms the groove under the tale of a trip to “Florida”. Chris switches to slide for an excellent 12 bar blues, “Lighthouse Keeper”, with a particularly fine vocal from Diana. Sonny Boy’s “Bye Bye Bird” is just Diana & Chris on harp, a rather different look at this classic. Chris takes the band to Chicago for “Fried Fish, (rum & ginger ale)”. It gets a little more serious for “Children of Circumstance”, a tale of a young man in a housing project meeting a Good Samaritan – a tour de force

of songwriting and singing (and harmonica soloing). After that it’s time to head to the “Tic Tac Toe” for some more good times. They also decided to perform some non-originals here, with fine versions of Skip James’ “Hard Time Killing Floor”, “Careless Love” and Jimmy Reed’s “You Don’t Have To Go”. They have a new web address: www.HotBlues.ca.

Blue Room Blue Room Self

Most of the musicians whose albums are reviewed here are doing it full time. There are some however who want to keep playing even though they have chosen careers outside music. Blue Room is one such band. Dark Angels is another. Blue Room has been at it for some time now, this being their fourth disc in almost twenty years. Brian Neller is the gravel-voiced singer, Paul Sanderson is on guitar, Fraser Lawrason plays fretless bass, Pat Quinn is on drums and Norm Ryan plays the saxes. They’ve done an excellent job here and you should catch their show at Monarch’s Pub on October 18th where they officially release this album. They also write their own songs, with Sanderson and Neller supplying most of them, either together or singly. The third song here describes their sound: they “Rock ‘n Roll The Blues”. They don’t play loud but they do play well - they clearly have been able to find a goodly amount of rehearsal time for these mostly live off the floor recordings. “Please Come Home” is an excellent blues about the plea of an abandoned child. “Clarksdale, Mississippi” chronicles a trip down the Blues Trail featuring a harmonica player who also keeps his hand in: John Bjarnason, of Whiskey Howl fame. “Walking Shoes” is also good, with the narrator thinking a long walk together will resolve problems. The concluding “Shake Hands With The Devil” is an extended piece on getting an offer from the devil, who then becomes the bank manager when you need a loan. The web site is www.blueroommusic.com.

Duke Robillard Calling All Blues Stony Plain/Warner

For his latest disc, Duke is ‘calling all blues’, a journey through various blues styles that allows him and the members of the band to shine, not only on their instruments but on group vocals on what even for Duke is an innovative set of new songs. “Down in Mexico” covers the Memphis/Stax sound particularly well, with lovely horns - he re-assembled the Roomful Horns for four songs here. “I’m Gonna Quit My Baby” is an acoustic jump blues, with an electric slide solo – he had not finished this song before he injured his hand, hence the rare slide appearance. “Svengali” may be the most innovative song here, an acoustic blues with a percussion-heavy arrangement. He says he wanted the sound of Peck Curtis on King Biscuit Time with Sonny Boy Williamson II. The song is about the John Barrymore movie of that name, he says in the notes. Sunny Crownover steps out front next on the slow blues “Blues Beyond The Call Of Duty”. She does a fine job with Duke’s excellent lyrics and you know he’s got the guitar part down on a song like this. “Emphasis on Memphis” opens & closes with the “Knock on Wood” horn riff as Duke pays homage to the importance of Memphis – the group vocal choruses sound like The Band, and with their devotion to American music history, it becomes a double tribute. Ron Sexsmith helped with the writing. Keyboard ace Bruce Bears gets a lead vocal on the light, jazzy “Confusion Blues”, a nice change of pace. “Motor Trouble” channels that rural Texas sound of Frankie Lee Sims. Another major new disc from the endlessly inventive Duke, he may have started with older blocks but he has built something remarkably new.

a trio and it was just great. And, um, I was talking to him--to Ron--one day, drinking coffee, and I said, I just finished transcribing this thing called “Forty-Fours” from Little Brother Montgomery. And he says, 'Oh, I know him.’ And I just--you know, my jaw dropped because I was completely un-hip to what might be going on in Chicago not 20 miles north from me. And, he said 'Yeah, I play with him all the time.’ So, he gave me the address and sort of cleared the path for me a little bit, I think. I wrote Little Brother a letter and he wrote back, and we agreed to meet. I rode up to the IC station in Chicago...got off the train and met Little Brother. And we went to Walgreens and sat down and I said, 'Look, can I tape-record our lessons?’ And he said, 'Well, yeah, you can do it, but you have to promise not to ever publish it--not to ever record it and make records of it.’ And I said 'Oh, I promise I won’t ever do that.’ And I haven’t. [pause] Ah, but I would take the stuff home and then transcribe, I would make piano music out of it...and did quite a lot of it. Then I’d go back and see him a couple weeks later, and play for him the things. And he was duly impressed, 'cause he’s never had a student that worked that way...

RdG:Well, it’s great because a lot of the blues that we would hear nowadays has

been filtered through several generations. And I know you’ll all appreciate Bill’s playing because it’s the source...it’s not being filtered...what you’re gonna hear is very historical. It’s like going back in time. And on that note, we’ll have the great Bill Westcott start.

Westcott: You’ve all been too kind. Thank you very much. [Applause]

For anyone who would like to acquaint themselves with the music of Bill Westcott and Little Brother Montgomery, each has live performance videos on Youtube. You may also find fascinating Westcott’s blog, “The Rantings of a Mad Music Professor” found at http://billwestcott.wordpress.com, and, of course, go hear Bill live if you can. For more information on “Rita’s Parlour”, see the Facebook page of the same name. Come out and see me some time!
