ShakuhachiConcertby Master Jim FranklinThursday 3 October 20137.00pmThe Old Darlington School*Entrance $20 / $10 concession
Benefit Concert for SZCDr Jim Franklin is a master performer of the shakuhachi, the
traditional Japanese flute. After learning the instrument in
Australia with Dr Riley Lee and in Japan with Furuya Teruo and
Yokoyama Katsuya, he received the title Shihan (“master”) in
1996 from Yokoyama-sensei, and was thus officially licensed to
teach and perform shakuhachi. Franklin has specialized in the
honkyoku of the school of Yokoyama Katsuya (Kokusai
Shakuhachi Kenshukan) and in modern music. Since 2004
Franklin has lived in Germany. From 2006 to 2009 he was
founding Chairperson of the European Shakuhachi Society.
The shakuhachi, the traditional Japanese bamboo flute, is a very
simple instrument: it consists of a piece of bamboo with five finger
holes and an angled blowing edge. In the music of the
shakuhachi, this simplicity permits a vibrancy coupled with deep
stillness. This is related to the meditative culture of Zen, within the
framework of which the traditional pieces for shakuhachi, the so-
called honkyoku, arose. As a shakuhachi player, Jim Franklin
specialises in the honkyoku primarily of the school of Yokoyama
Katsuya (Kokusai Shakuhachi Kenshukan) and in modern music.
