The new society that the worldawaited might yet be born in the humble guise of a backwoods village. This was thebelief shared by the many groups that moved into the American frontier to createexperimental communities--communities that they hoped would model for revolutionary changes in religion, politics, economics, and education in American society. For, as James Madison wrote, the American Republic was “useful in providing things before held impossible.” The communitarian ideal had its roots in the radical Protestant sects of the Reformation. Chmielewski, Wendy E.; Kern, Louis J.; Klee-Hartzell, MarlynWomen in Spiritual and Communitarian Societies in the United States(Utopianism and Communitarianism Series)Syracuse University Press, 1993. First edition. xix, 275 pp. ‘Most people areprobably unaware that communitarian lifestyles existed in this country long before the attention they received in the 1960s. In fact, this book looks at women in communitarian and spiritual societies as far back as the 1700s. This is amulti-faceted study of a number of different types of social experiments and women’s experiences in them. Some of these communities, considered radical for their time, like The Northampton Association of Education and Industry, housed the genesis of egalitarian systems and philosophies later accepted into the mainstream. Others were patriarchal in the extreme. Some, like the Shakers and the various Catholic sisterhoods, were based on achieving a pure religious vision. This is a fascinating glimpse at a variety of functional communities, their power structures and leadership, what they created and achieved, and the women’s personal perceptions.’ - The WomanSource Catalog & Review. 43. Duss, John S.The Harmonists: A Personal HistoryHarmonie Associates, 1970. The Harmonists tells the story of one of the many utopian communities of the United States in the 1800s. It is also seen as an ideology of social change and as a continuing tradition, traced from the end of the seventeenth century to the 1790s, and is shown to be embedded in folk culture. Very good. Jacket lightly rubbed. $1080. Hayden, DoloresSeven American Utopias: Architecture of Communitarian Socialism, 1790-1975MIT Press, 1976. 2nd printing. From the time of its discovery, the new world wasregarded by American settlers as a new Eden and a new Jerusalem. Although individual pioneers’ visions of paradise were inevitably corrupted by reality, some determined ideatists carved out enclaves in order to develop collective models of what they believed to be more perfect societies. All such communitarian groups consciously attempted to express their social ideals in their buildings and landscapes; invariably, ideological predispositions can be inferred from a close study of the environments they created. The interplay between ideology and architecture, the social design and the physical design of American utopian communities, is the basis of this remarkable book by Dolores Hayden. $1085. Holstun, JamesA Rational Millennium: Puritan Utopias of Seventeenth-Century England and AmericaOxford, 1987. First edition. Taking a new approach to the history of utopia, this volume combines the political study of literary form with the literary study of political rhetoric. After arguing that early modern utopists, both literary and non-literary, attempt to reshape displaced populations, Holstun concentrates on two utopian projects of the mid-17th century: the political platforms andAlgonquin “praying towns” of John Eliot in Massachusetts and the republican political theory of James Harrington in Protectorate England. Moving between these projects and modern analyses of rationalization, he shows that Puritanutopia shares the modern Western longing for universal social discipline and that it envisions this discipline as the rational means to the Millennium. $90107. Marini, Stephen A.Radical Sects of Revolutionary New EnglandHarvard, 1982. First edition. During the late eighteenth century, radical religious sects in the backwoods of New England created a mass movement in dissent, which broke the grip of a monolithic religious culture and helped lay thefoundation for a new style of diversity in religion and ultimately in politics. In this comparative study of the Shakers, Universalists, and Freewill Baptists,Stephen Marini analyzes beliefs, leadership, social structures, and rituals in order to decipher their appeal and explain the larger effects. These three sects arose during the American Revolution in response to a complex crisis ofreligious revival, frontier migration, and political changes. By 1815 theyrepresented one-fourth of rural New Englands churches. Their rejection of basic Calvinist beliefs and practices such as predestination and original sin presented the first large-scale popular challenge to the dominant religious norms in New England. As Americas earliest indigenous religions they created alternative theologies, polities, and liturgies which expressed a new emphasis on free will, equality, and community. Utilizing the concepts and techniques of social history, anthropology, and sociology, Marinis work traces the development of these new religious cultures as an integral element of Revolutionary New England. First edition. “The compendium catalogs 300 plants, shrubs, and trees with their roots, barks, flowers, and berries. All pertinent botanical data are given, as well as remarks on how the Shakers thought they could alleviatespecific ailments. Who would guess that the sweet basil we love in salads was used to allay vomiting, that bayberry can be used fro canker sores, that the young dandelion plant possesses mildly narcotic irritability, that dill seed can stop hiccups? The author does not prescribe, but readers interested in natural rememdies will find the original Shaker text fascinating. The exquisite renderings of herbs were drawn by Sister Cora Helena Sarle in 1886 and 1887 under the direction of Elder Henry Cay Blinn, who wrote the plant descriptions. These are the sam annoteated drawings that were used as teach-ing devices to help Shaker school-children memorize their native plants. (Though the Shakers practiced celibacy, converts in mid-life brought their children to the commu-nity.) They are reproduced in their subtle and delightful original colors in a full-color insert.”Very good. Jacket edges lightly rubbed.

Noyes coined the term ‘free love’, and was the leader of a group that believed in sexual freedom among consenting adults. Their community was characterized by complex marital arrangements, sharing of sexual partners, birth control, eugenics, and communal property. It inspired a number of similar communities in neighboring states, and existed for over thirty years, sustaining itself by establishing various industries, including the manufacture of silverware. Noyes, John HumphreyHistory of American SocialismsDover Publications, 1966. “During forty years in the mid-19th Century, a large num-ber of communitarian societies was established in America, most of them dedicated to the Socialist principles of Owen and Fourier. It was a national movement, involving some 136,500 acres of land in eleven states and over 8.500 individuals. Each society was launched with fervent hope and the sacrifice of much time and money; yet it was the rare one that managed to survive its second year, and its decrease often left behind a load of debts and much disillusionment. 157. Sarle, Cora HelenaA Shaker Sister’s DrawingsMonacelli Press, 1997. First edition. Over one hundred years ago, a young woman at Canterbury Shaker Village in New Hampshire was considered too frail to take part in tlie rigorous daily duties of the working Shaker Sisters. Yet Cora Helena Sarle had a talent for art, and the spiritual leader of the community, Elder Heiiry Clay Blinn, suggested that she use her gift for the good of thecommunal family. Thus she began her task of recording all the wild plants, herbs, and flowers around the village. In two modest notebooks, leaving no room for mistakes, young Helena filled page after page with more than 180exquisite color illustrations, exceptional for both their accuracy and theirdelicacy. Each drawing is complimented by the specific growing conditions of the wild and cultivated plants. With this work, she joined a Shaker tradition of creating maps and “gift drawings” that relayed the message and passion of the group’s calling. This lovely facsimile captures the life aiid times not only of Cora Helena Sarle but of Canterbury Shaker Village in the 1880s. Essays by noted Shaker expert June Sprigg and Village president Scott T. Swank illuminate the patterns of daily living in the nineteenth-century community. And of course, Helena’s exquisite drawings bring to life the extensive Canterbury property, and reveal the inspirational gifts of their creator. Near fine.

191. Whitson, Robley Edward (Editor)The Shakers: Two Centuries of Spiritual ReflectionPaulist Press, 1983. The Shaker tradition, from its origin in late eighteenth-centu-ry England to its flowering in nineteenth-century America, long has been of in-terest to students of sociology and American religious history. Yet, few attempts have been made to relate Shaker theology and spirituality to the mainstream of Western mystical experience. In presenting this collection of Shaker texts, Rob-ley E. Whitson contends that Shakerism has been generally misunderstood and, consequently, undervalued as a source of useful insights into the divine-human relationship. Good. Minimal underlining in text, lightly rubbed.
