Clamp in bench vice, screw to wall, etc.

I made this vise in 1997 as a gift for my wife who weaves the tape seats for all of the chairs I build. I used wood at hand in the shop so it is a mishmash of North American hardwoods. The Stanchion is Oak, the Shaft is hard maple and the Frame and jaws are poplar. Leather on the jaw surfaces really helps to hold the chair without scratching it.

I fashioned the vise based on a photo of Sister Sarah Collins using such a device at the Mount Lebanon Settlement in the early Twentieth Century . This vise really makes waving chair seats a breeze!
