Emerald Ash Borer in Maryland Please visit our Program Updates page for the latest information on the Maryland EAB Program.

To date, the emerald ash borer has only been detected in the U.S. in Michigan (2002), Ohio (2003), one county in Maryland (2003, 2006), Indiana (2004), Illinois (2006), Pennsylvania (2007), and West Virginia (2007).

MARYLAND SUMMARY:

2003 - On Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003 a Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) inspector found emerald ash borer-infested ash trees at a single Prince George’s County nursery. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Systematic Entomology Laboratory in Beltsville, MD confirmed the identification of the emerald ash borer. Emerald ash borer (EAB) is a serious pest of quarantine significance. Eradication efforts were completed in March of 2004. The Maryland Department of Agriculture issued a Quarantine Order on March 17, 2004.

2006 - On Monday August 21, larvae detected in a sentinel ash tree placed in the original eradication area as part of follow up survey activities, and a girdled environmental tree just outside of the eradication area, but still within the quarantined area, were confirmed as emerald ash borer by USDA. The Maryland Department of Agriculture issued a revised Quarantine Order that prohibits anyone from moving ash (Fraxinus spp.) trees, products, or any hardwood firewood into or out of Prince Georges’s County until further notice. The County was added to the federal emerald ash borer quarantine on June 1, 2007. MD Dept. Ag. 50 Harry S. Truman Parkway. Tree Care Industry Association Honors Forester

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary John Griffin this week congratulated Urban and Community Forestry supervisor Michael Galvin, on his receipt of the Tree Care Industry Association’s 2007 Advancing Arboriculture Award. “Mike’s dedication to the Forestry Service has helped us effectively manage our resources and strengthen the department’s relationships with countless communities,” said Secretary Griffin. Galvin, whose duties include licensing and regulation of tree experts in Maryland, likes to call himself the state’s top tree cop. “Mike’s passion to professionalize the industry is unmistakable,” said Cynthia Mills of the Tree Care Industry Association. ”He has the vision to work together towards improvement.” The Tree Care Industry Association, formerly known as the National Arborists Association, is a trade association dedicated to the advancement of the arboriculture profession. Its Advancing Arboriculture Award is given to a governmental agency, institution, or green industry partner that has worked to advance legislation, regulation, or practices favorable to the tree care industry. “Over the past five years, Michael Galvin and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources have done— pass an arborist licensing law with real teeth and spend the resources necessary to enforce it,” the association said in its narrative accompanying the award. Galvin, who has worked for the Forestry Service since March 1995, says Maryland has one of the most comprehensive licensing laws for tree experts in the country and has taken a leading role in working with the industry to upgrade its professional standards. “It’s a great honor that they view DNR as an integral partner.” said Galvin. Galvin has taken a position with Casey Trees, a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and enhance the tree canopy in the nation’s capital. Six Maryland Trees Become New National Champion Trees

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Six of Maryland’s current big tree champions were recently deemed new National Champions by the nation’s oldest nonprofit citizens’ conservation organization, American Forests in the 2008-2009 National Register of Big Trees.

“We are proud of these honors which help to keep Maryland’s strong forestry tradition alive,” said Steve Koehn, Maryland Forest Service Director.

The new national champions from Maryland include:

• An American Elm with a trunk circumference of 246 inches from Baltimore County. Standing 136 feet tall, it is the tallest of all the elm species national champions in the United States.

• In Howard County, a Bigleaf Magnolia, standing 55 feet tall with an average crown spread of 53 feet. • An Atlantic White-cedar from Bel Air, Md. with a 127-inch in trunk circumference. • In Silver Spring, Md. a Blackhaw standing 26 feet tall was designated co-champion with a Virginia

tree of the same species. • A Kentucky Coffeetree, standing 85 feet tall from Washington, Md. also became a co-champion with a

tree from Ohio. • An American Holly located in Prince George’s County became a tri-champion with two Virginia trees.

“The Maryland Big Tree program is thrilled to have its champions recognized at a national level, “said John Bennett, Maryland Big Tree Program Volunteer Manager. “It highlights not only the sheer size of these impressive trees, but focuses on the value of all trees.”

Official big tree designations are based on a point system. A tree’s eligibility for big tree status relies upon three measurements including: trunk circumference at 4 ½ feet above the ground; vertical tree height; and the average crown spread. These measurements are added together to calculate the tree’s total points.

For more information, email John Bennett at: [email protected].

To be eligible for listing in the National Register of Big Trees, a species must be recognized as native or naturalized in the continental United States. When two trees have scores that fall within 5 points of each other, they are listed as co-champions. For a complete listing of national champion trees, visit www.americanforests.org/downloads/bigtrees/2008_NB_Tree_Reg.pdf.

Abiotic Disorders of Landscape Plants: A Diagnostic Guide

Laurence R. Costello, et al.

“Landscape plants can be injured by biotic and abiotic agents. Abiotic or nonliving agents include environmental, physiological, and other nonbiological factors[.] Biotic agents are living organisms such as insects, pathogens, nematodes, parasitic plants, and viruses[.] This publication focuses on abiotic disorders such as water deficits, aeration deficits, nutritional deficiencies, specific ion toxicities, pH-related problems, and herbicide injury. “Much of this publication is devoted to the symptoms, occurrence, and diagnosis of specific abiotic disorders. Injury symptoms that mimic a particular abiotic disorder are identified (‘look-alike disorders), and lists of sensitive and tolerant species are included. Color photographs and easy-to-use summary tables describe symptoms and help identify causes. Although some information on remedies is provided, treatment is not the focus of this guide.” Taken from: Costello, Laurence R., et al. Abiotic Disorders of Landscape Plants: A Diagnostic Guide.
