Mortimer Downey, Chair Board of Directors
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority
600 5th Street, NW Washington, DC 20001
Dear Chair Downey,
We are writing concerning an issue that affects thousands of Montgomery County commuters
every day and poses significant safety and customer satisfaction concerns. Today, at rush hour, the Shady Grove Metro Station's platform fills up with commuters exiting trains. Residents have raised to
us their experiences waiting minutes to exit the station and feeling particularly unsafe when they are
stuck at the edge of the crowd just inches from the edge of the platform.
Luckily, WMATA has identified both short-term and long-term solutions to addressing this
concern. We would ask you to support funding to implement Alternative 1A, as proposed in the Shady Grove Station Capacity Improvements Study, which would add an additional staircase to improve
circulation and safety. Though there are certainly many wise investments for Metrorail to make at this
time to improve safety, reliability, and the customer experience, the issues at Shady Grove are among the most critical for any Red Line station in Montgomery County. It was a major topic of concern
raised by residents at the forum that the Council held in July on Metro's current challenges and future
possibilities. Additionally, overcrowding on platforms throughout the system is now the subject of an FTA investigation.
Therefore, we urge you to take the steps necessary to move this project forward. As Metro looks to overcome its present difficulties, it needs to show the public it is responsive to the major concerns
of its customers, the riding public. Improving Shady Grove in this way would give tangible evidence that Metro is committed to providing a better rider experience.
We thank you for your consideration of this important project and look forward to your response. If there are ways that we can help to build support for this project in Maryland, please let us know.
Sincerely,
Roger Berliner Sidney Katz Councilmember, District 1 Councilmember, District 3
