Together in ServiceHere at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, we have always appreciated the importance of collaboration and findingways to foster and encourage teamwork. Each and every initiative in our quest to provide the best care to our community requires a coming together of physicians, caregivers, and administrators — all of whom are devoted toour mission of service.

In June of 2012, we broke ground on the new Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art facility, which will bring together specialists and caregivers in a centralized location to provide the best in cancercare right here in our community. The proximity of surgeons, radiologists, dietitians, nurse navigators, social workersand others will allow for an easier and more efficient exchange of information, which will in turn lead to better delivery of care for our patients.

Just as we have done before with the Expansion Campaign for the new Tower, the Healing Garden and the newCardiac, Vascular and Interventional Radiology Suite, the Aquilino Cancer Center is coming to fruition after manyyears of planning and support from our community.

As a friend of Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, you are an integral part of our team and a vital link in a chain thathas grown longer and stronger over the years as we have made more advancements and programs available in ourcommitment to bring exceptional, compassionate care to those we serve.

For the special place you hold on our team — thank you. Through your support of all we do, you’ve tilled the soilwith us, making so much important progress possible for the health and wellbeing of our community.

Together in PurposeVince Lombardi once said, “Success demands singleness of purpose.” Arguably one of the most successful coachesin the history of football, his ability to motivate and inspire his players is legendary. He taught them about the importance of focus, determination and — most importantly — passion for the job at hand.

At Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, we understand the importance of perseverance. Our purpose — our mission — is atthe heart of everything we do. And every corner of the hospital, from the Healing Garden to the Emergency Department to every unit of every floor, each place and each person contributes in a unique way to that unified purpose.

We are very excited about building another place with purpose — the new Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino CancerCenter. As part of our mission of serving our community through physical, mental and spiritual healing, the Centerwill focus on providing the best care for cancer patients and delivering that care in a way that makes the ordeal moremanageable for patients and their families. The leading-edge treatments offered at the Center will assist those whoare battling cancer. And with services that also include supportive care, such as nutrition counseling, nurse navigation, social work, support groups, fitness classes and more, the Aquilino Cancer Center will be a unique place for healing.

We acknowledge that in our quest for purpose, there is a special place that you, our partners from every corner ofour community, hold. Without your support, the many initiatives, programs and services we offer simply wouldnot exist.

For maintaining your place beside us over the years, we are eternally grateful.

ATeam Makes aDifferenceThe first symptom she experienced was a loss of energy. Before long, she began feeling a shortness of breath. “I wasclose to passing out,” Elizabeth Schwaab recalled.

She knew something was terribly wrong.

Elizabeth had two large blood clots in her lungs, which were affecting her heart’s ability to pump blood, and her ability tobreathe. This situation, called a pulmonary embolism, is very serious, and often fatal if not caught and treated very quickly.

Elizabeth was rushed to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital where it was promptly determined that she would require aprocedure called a pulmonary embolectomy, where a catheter is inserted through the heart and into the lungs to removeclots. Shady Grove is one of very few hospitals in the area where this procedure is performed. Several specialists andservice lines were involved in her care, including physicians in the intensive care unit, the catheterization lab, andvascular specialists. “A tremendous coordination of effort is required in a case like this,” said Dr. Jeffrey Wang, thevascular surgeon who performed the procedure on Elizabeth.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital is recognized for its commitment to high level patient care and quality testing for thediagnosis of vascular disease, providing comprehensive diagnostic, interventional, and surgical vascular services. Thevascular services team works closely with internists, radiologists, general surgeons, plastic surgeons, podiatrists, car-diologists, pulmonary doctors and others to diagnose and treat a variety of cases.

Elizabeth credits her full recovery to a dedicated team, which included Dr. Wang and internist Dr. Brian Carpenter, among others, who worked seamlessly together to save her life.

At theHeart of a CardiacTeamJust 41 years old, Parag Parikh was young and healthy, or so he thought. But on a recent afternoon, when he beganexperiencing tingling in his shoulder, discomfort and a racing feeling in his chest, he thought he should call 9-1-1,just to be safe.

Within minutes of their arrival, the paramedic team performed an electrocardiogram (EKG) and sent the results di-rectly to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital via LifeNet. This communications system enables ambulances in Mont-gomery County to transmit critical information to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital while patients are en route, allowing for the appropriate care to be ready as soon as the patient arrives.

Immediately upon his arrival at Shady Grove, Parag was rushed to the catheterization lab, where interventional car-diologist Dr. Michael Castine performed an emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), or angioplasty,to relieve a blockage in one of Parag’s arteries.

After his surgery, a program of rehabilitation and exercise was prescribed for Parag. “There is a multidisciplinaryteam dedicated to rehabilitating patients after a cardiac event,” according to Dennis Friedman, M.D., medical directorof cardiac and vascular services and cardiac rehabilitation at Shady Grove. Specialists, including cardiologists, nurses, physiologists, dietitians and certified diabetes educators, work together as a team and directly with patientsto improve their quality of life and prevent the progression of heart disease.

For Parag, the entire experience was a wake-up call to improve his health. He describes his newfound focus on aheart-healthy lifestyle as “helping me regain my confidence, physically and emotionally.”

AFamily Gives Back

“It brings closure to a very difficult time in my life,

and it’s a dedication to my wife. And for me…I’m able

to give something back to the community.”

— Michael AquilinoThe Aquilino Family

Several years ago, Michael Aquilino learned something very important about the value of time. His wife, Tammie, wasdiagnosed with cancer. For two and a half years, as she bravely battled the disease, time was a precious commodity.

The demands of caring for his wife and their three young children, traveling to many doctor’s appointments whilemaintaining his career were taxing.

After Tammie passed away, Michael decided more could be done to help families such as his, battling cancer in ourcommunity. His generous donation has helped the Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center become a reality.

Michael believed our community deserved a state-of-the-art cancer center, where the best of care would be available,a place where services patients would benefit from would be available under one roof, eliminating the need to travelnear and far for appointments. The Aquilino Cancer Center offers an array of services that help patients in theirphysical, emotional and spiritual fight, while taking into consideration the importance of preserving the family unit.

When the Aquilino Cancer Center opens its doors in the summer of 2013, it will house advanced technology andleading-edge equipment to help patients fight a variety of cancers. Patients and their families will have access — inone place — to expert medical care as well as essential support services. And the center will house multidisciplinaryteams of cancer specialists who will work together every day on patient care plans.

This past June, Michael and his family joined physicians and administrators from Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, friends of the hospital and members of the community at the official groundbreaking ceremony for the AquilinoCancer Center.

This summer, Adventist HealthCare officials, members of the Shady Grove Ad-ventist Hospital team, local elected officials and members of our communityjoined together in a special groundbreaking ceremony on the campus of ShadyGrove Adventist Hospital, on the site that will become Montgomery County'sfirst free-standing, comprehensive cancer center.

The Shady Grove Adventist Aquilino Cancer Center, scheduled to open in the summer of 2013, will be a 50,000 squarefoot, three-story building and will offer state-of-the-art cancer care in one centralized location to patients in our community.

The Center will house multidisciplinary teams of cancer specialists, including medical, surgical and radiation oncologists;oncology nurses; cancer care nurse navigators; oncology dietitians and social workers, who will all work together, sideby side, and directly with patients. For the dedicated teams of caregivers, the Aquilino Cancer Center will create a placewhere they can more efficiently interact with their colleagues and work more proactively in their quest to better servetheir patients. As part of the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center and the Great Seneca Science Corridor, physicians at theAquilino Cancer Center will also be able to closely collaborate with local and national research organizations, and offerpatients opportunities to participate in clinical trials and research projects.

Every patient who walks through the Center's doors will have access to all the important servicesthey need — the very best of care — delivered in a way that will make the cancer experiencemore manageable for the patient and the patient's family.

“For the patient, our plan is to create a Center where they can walk in and have all of the servicesthey need that completely takes care of them as they're fighting cancer,” said Jane Peck, the Ex-ecutive Director of Cancer Care Services for Adventist HealthCare. “Not just their doctor's ap-pointments and the clinical side of things, but also the supportive care that a cancer patient needs, whether that be through psycho-social support, nutritional support, fitness, all of those elementsthat are so important to a person when they're battling the disease.”

The cancer journey takes both a physical and an emotional toll on patients. From a patient'sperspective, having all the services they need under one roof makes life easier during a time thatis stressful and taxing. The Center's breadth of services will transform the way cancer patientscope with and fight their disease.

14 Cancer CareIn 2011, the new Shady Grove Adventist Radiation OncologyCenter opened in Germantown, Maryland. The center is thefirst facility in Germantown to offer radiation therapy. The cen-ter houses state-of-the-art radiation equipment using conebeam technology, one of the latest advances in cancer treat-ment. This important advancement is part of Shady Grove Ad-ventist Hospital’s commitment to expand access to vital servicesto residents of upper Montgomery County.

Also in 2011, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital's Life Beyond Can-cer program experienced significant growth. Since its inception, the goal of the program has been to ensure that a comprehensivecomplement of cancer care services is made available to membersof our community. Last year, the program moved to an expandedoffice space and is currently housing a nurse navigation team thathelps guide patients through their cancer journey. The NationalComprehensive Cancer Network recommends the use of naviga-tors to ensure patients receive the best care possible and under-stand and have access to an array of services that may be helpfulto them — in essence, developing a customized treatment plan

that is based on the individual needs of each patient. The naviga-tion team at Shady Grove includes four nurse navigators, an on-cology social worker and an oncology dietitian. The team focuseson treating the whole person through expanded access to clinical, physical, spiritual and financial resources.

The Aquilino Cancer Center is the latest in a series of advancements planned by Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, as part

of our mission to ensure that our friends and neighbors in our community have the best of care available right here where

they need it most.

Before we look ahead to other current and future advancements, we wanted to share some of the important progress made

in 2011 in programs and services at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital. These initiatives are already making significant dif-

ferences for our patients and their families and would not be possible without the generous support of our friends and

partners in care. Additionally, we received several designations and awards throughout 2011; these achievements demon-

strate our dedication to delivering the finest care possible to our community.

Nutrition classes, support groups and complementary fitness activities have beenmade available to patients and their families throughout the courseof the year. Additionally, a Healing Arts initiative was launched;studies have shown that exposure to the arts in health care helps toreduce stress and anxiety, decreases the need for pain medication, decreases blood pressure and reduces the duration of hospital stays.

Currently, more than 1,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients (ofthe nearly 5,000 throughout Montgomery County) chooseShady Grove for their care and support programs each year. This number is expected to significantly increase with the open-ing of the Aquilino Cancer Center.

Shady Grove Adventist Hospital's Cancer Program achieved ac-creditation with commendation by the Commission on Cancerof the American College of Surgeons in 2011. It is among only

30 percent of U.S. hospitals to achieve this distinction, signifying the quality care provided to patients by Shady Grove Adventist Hospital’s cancer care program.

Cardiac and Vascular CareIn the spring of 2011, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital achievedan important designation — it was named as one of the fewcardiac interventional centers in the state of Maryland. TheMaryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services and Systems(MIEMSS) awards this designation after careful review of qual-ifications and requirements and a lengthy and rigorous appli-cation process. This is a very prestigious designation, as EMSin Maryland can only take patients who are suspected of suf-fering a heart attack to hospitals who hold this title.

Also in 2011, Shady Grove Adventist Hospital received threerecognitions for quality cardiac care. These included: 2011 AC-TION Registry-GWTG Gold Performance Achievement Awardfrom the American College of Cardiology Foundation and theAmerican Heart Association; the Mission Lifeline Silver Perform-ance Achievement Award from the American Heart Association;and the Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (pPCI)waiver extension from the Maryland Health Care Commission.

EMR Technology Always with a goal of more efficient care, Shady Grove Adven-tist Hospital and the entire Adventist HealthCare system insti-tuted electronic medical records (EMR) technology in 2011,moving to an EMR system for all patients. Transition to thestate-of-the-art clinical system involved years of planning andtraining. The system makes it easier for physicans and patientsto keep track of their medical history and also helps physiciansshare helpful information with patients about their conditionmore easily and quickly.

EMR allows “anytime access” to physicians, so they may be ableto consult critical patient records wherever they are, wheneverthey may need the information. Ultimately, this important ad-vancement ensures that medical offices operate more efficiently, and enhances the quality of patient care. The move to the newEMR system is part of a commitment to “Care Excellence” —which includes plans to transform the standards of care delivery, enhance the patient experience, increase provider productivityand expand patient access to health information.

Ways to Give

There are many ways to give.Contribute OnlineYou can choose the amount and also the designation at any

time by going to www.ShadyGroveAdventistHospital.com.

Gifts of Appreciated PropertyThose who enjoy making charitable gifts are pleased to learn

that when appreciated property that has been held for more

than 12 months (i.e., stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate)

is donated, an income tax deduction is generally allowed based

on the current value of the property rather than just its cost.

This may provide greater tax benefits than a cash donation.

BequestsCash, securities, real estate, or personal property can all be given

to charity through your will. By naming the hospital as a char-

itable beneficiary of your estate, you’ll become a member of our

Heritage Society. Call and we will help you make arrangements.

Charitable Gift AnnuityIn giving, you will be receiving, for life! This is an opportu-

nity to make a charitable gift to support Shady Grove Adven-

tist Hospital and receive fixed annual payments for life. The

payment amount is based on the age(s) of the payment recip-

ient(s). The older the recipient(s), the larger the payments.

Charitable Lead TrustA charitable lead trust can be created to provide income for a

charity, such as Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, for a desig-

nated period of time (typically, 10 to 15 years). At the end of

the designated number of years, it can be possible to transfer

assets to your heirs while paying little or no gift or estate tax.

The President’s Circle of FriendsThis membership club includes esteemed individuals and

businesses who donate an outright gift of $2,000 or more to
