Joseph Bishop arrived in Melbourne during the goldrushes, ultimately establishing a coach building business at Beechworth, which was later transferred to Euroa. The family moved to Melbourne in the late 1880s, where one son became the proprietor of the trade journal 'The Australasian Coachbuilder and Saddler'. The collection consists of family photographs and photographs used to illustrate 'The Australasian Coachbuilder and Saddler'. This photo shows a view of two adult males seated in a motor buggy outside the Shady Creek Hotel. Written on the photo mounting: A motor buggy. Photo taken near Melbourne. Captain Tarrant driving (Allied Motors)." Pencilled on verso: Motor buggy was first introduced about 1906. Its description is in CB (Coach Builder) for March 1907, page 292. Almost certainly 1908, practically built by Tarrants. Motor buggies had a very short run - about 3 years and they had disappeared. Right enough at low (?) speed, but beyond that, soon out of action."

A “SHADY” CREEK YARN

I sat beside the driver, and merrilywe did go,On the o’d red coach of Messrs Cobband Co,The sun was up, the day was fine, theair was calm and stillOn we spun with four in hand, themists rose up the hill.We struck a light and lit our pipes,the driver, Bill and I,And soon the smoke went curling upto the deep blue sky.“Been long a driving, Bill” said I;said Bill “You bet,I’ve been a driving thirty year, and Ican tool ‘em yet.”The road then took a sudden turnaround a granite hill,And far before my wandering gaze layGippsland, calm and still;Its ragged ranges lighted up with floodsof liquid gold,While far beyond, the mighty lakeslike frosted silver rolled,And o’er the gullies far below, halfhidden from the view,Like white sails on green seas, flew thescreeching cockatoo.“An awkward pinch, just here, Bill; rather a nasty place.”

A wink rose in his near eye, and spreadall o’er his face;He took his knife, and with a plug hecalmly filled his pipe,Then took a bottle from his coat-and-gave his mouth a wipe,“Think so,” said he “think so,” assoon as he could speak,“’Tis nothing to the turn I had, down at old Shady Creek,You see it had been raining hard, thegullies all were full,”He gave the near side horse a touch,and gave the reins a pull.“Old Shady Creek was o’er its banks,the bridge was swept away,Full speed we went all down the hill,It was the ‘devil to pay,’You know the saying Sir-Well duringthe past week,Some chap had cut a big tree down, right across the creek,You know the big trees there, Sir, they are an awful size,I wouldn’t like to say how big, I don’tlike telling lies.Well, there the big tree lay, Sir, right across the Creek,And we’d be slap into the flood, before a chap could speak;

I shouted to the insides, ‘Quick! to the lower side!’And got the coach upon a skew, justas the tree I tried;The horses gave an awful leap, and we sprang over, slap,On two wheels balanced on the log,just like a cyclist chap,With head and shoulders doubled up,a kink all in his back,Goes spinning on his whirling “bi”all down a steep bush track;Well, we got over safe, Sir, and hereIs old Mac Duff,And I don’t mind a drop, Sir, that yarn was rather tough.”

•The School (historically referred to as the School Hall) was built on donated land, with donated cash and labour.

•School commenced in 1903.

•The first School Hall burnt down in a bushfire in 1923, the only thing left standing was the chimney (which we believe still stands today)

•The school moved to a new site and building across the road in 1956, leaving the School Hall to operate solely as the Community Hall.

•Since 1956 additions and extensions have been made, but the basic structure of the original School Hall remains part of the extended building
