A Memo from Mark I am happy to inform you that our committee is taking some initial steps forward on the synagogue renovation project as well as other items of interest. We hired a company to generate drawings of the synagogue that will help us visualize different possibilities. There was also a brainstorming session with a company very experienced in building and renovating synagogues. On another topic; some of our members are working on improving our programming for children. We will be presenting their plans in March. Have great Shabbat! Mark Lowitz

From the Rabbi Birchot Hashachar II

The next three blessings we recite each morning are Shelo Asani Goy, Shelo Asani Oved, and Shelo Asani Isha/Sheasani Kirzono”- We acknowledge that G-d created us as Jews, as free human beings, and as men/women. It is noteworthy that these blessings are in the negative, Shelo Asani…that I was NOT created ____, whereas the other thirteen are in the positive. HaRav Baruch HaLevi Epstein zt”l, in his book on tefillah, Baruch Sheamar, states that the underlying theme of these three blessings is a recognition and appreciation of our being bound to the Creator with mitzvot. It therefore follows logically that the more mitzvot one is obligated to perform, the more there is to acknowledge. With this in mind we can understand that we first thank Hashem for not creating us as gentiles because we have been commanded 606 more mitzvot than non-Jews. Slaves in a Jewish household at the time of the Tanach and beyond were obligated in many more mitzvot than non-Jews. But since their obligations were fewer than their masters' we thank G-d that we are not slaves. Finally men thank Hashem that we are not ladies simply because men are required to perform all 613 mitzvot; and ladies are exempt from time bound positive commandments. Although a woman should certainly feel proud and privileged with her femininity, and without both women and men civilization would not advance, she nevertheless does not recite "thank You for not making me a man" because it would imply that she is happy to be obligated in less mitzvot, which would be irreverent. It is simply wrong to assume that that since males are obligated to fulfill more mitzvot than females, men are somehow elevated to a loftier status in the eyes of G-d and/or the Torah. It can be argued that the opposite is true; that a woman does not need to fulfill all 613 mitzvot to achieve her potential like a man does. A woman’s role in Jewish life is at least as great as a man's; it’s just different! The same way we have been created differently, endowed with different biological functions and capabilities, so too we are charged with different roles spiritually. When both women and men achieve their unique potential in life, then G-d’s world achieves greatness. The Ohr Hachaim, Chaim ben Moses ibn Attar of Morocco (1696 -1743) comments in the beginning of Genesis that of all species created by G-d, the only species on earth that female is created out of the same structure as the male is humanity. All other beings are formed as female and male separately. This teaches that the human male and female complete one another. A married couple resembles original man and woman and are inextricably linked as one unit, undivided and eternally bound. Take Home Tip: Remember that you are who you are because that is who you are supposed to be. So be proud of who you are and celebrate your unique status by acknowledging your existence as a holy creation of G-d by reciting the appropriate blessings each say. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Ephraim Epstein
