TORAH TIDBITS The Parsha starts out by saying "Judah approached him and said", with Judah approaching Joseph to beg for Benjamin's freedom. This can be seen as a clash between two rulers; the ruler of a country (Joseph) and the ruler of a family (Judah). It seems like a allusion to the future. In fact, during the First Temple Period, when the Land of Israel was split between two kingdoms, many of the kings of the Northern kingdom were descended from the tribe of Joseph (it was sometimes referred to Ephraim), while the kings of the Southern Kingdom were all descended from the tribe of Judah (through King David). During this time period there was fighting between the two kingdoms. However, just as Joseph forgave his brothers and they reunited to once again become the twelve sons of Jacob; so too will both kingdoms reunite to become one in the future. As the prophet Ezekiel says in the Haftorah; "Behold, I am taking the wood of Joseph which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel, his comrades, and I am placing them and him together with the wood of Judah; and I will make them into on piece of wood, and they will be-come one in My hand." Written by Josh Dobkin. If you would like to submit a thought for Torah Tidbits, please reach out to Jason at [email protected]
