Composer Feature

Mosh Ben Ari was born in Afula, Israel in 1970. With both a Yemenite and an Iraqi background, Ben Ari first discovered music through the traditional Jewish ethnical chants that were part of his everyday life. He started playing music at the age of 16 and, soon thereafter, Ben Ari studied music around the world, including India, the Sahara and the Sinai. He plays various string instruments such as the acoustic and classic guitar, Indian sarod, Persian tar, Turkish jumbush, Moroccan ginberi and the bass. In 1995 he founded, with a few friends, the world music ensemble Sheva (Seven). Their first album, HaChatunah HaShmeemeet ("Heavenly Wedding”) featured the hit song “Od Yavo” (also callled “Salaam”). -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The December 4 “Bringing Vision to Life” evening was magical. Thank you to all our donors, organizers, volunteers, program participants, particularly our keynote speaker, the Hon. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and most especially Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum for 25 years of inspired and inspiring leadership. Check CBST.org for video, photos and more. $2.3 million was raised to address the total $24.5 million Home of Our Own project budget, leaving just $300,000 to complete this campaign. The Donor Wall at CBST is scheduled to be updated in Spring 2018, acknowledging donors at the $18,000, $36,000, $50,000 & $100,000+ levels. Dedication opportunities are still available. Contact Ann at 212-929-9498x 814 or [email protected].

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY Our God and God of our ancestors,

bless this country and all who dwell within it. Help us to experience the blessings

of our lives and circumstances, To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us stay angry, So that our anger motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear,

knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them.

Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty, To not take for granted the freedoms won

in generations past or in recent days. To heal and nourish our democracy,

that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream; it need not fear drought when it comes, its leaves are always green (Jeremiah 17:8).

Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts,

but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to

speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country

share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws.

May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.

May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism,

discrimination, and violence in all its forms, To celebrate the many faces of God reflected

in the wondrous diversity of humanity, To welcome the stranger and the immigrant

and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here, as they have since before this nation was born.

Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24)

Workshop on Legal Demonstrations and Non-Violent Civil Disobedience SAVE THE DATE—Sunday, February 11, 11:00am-4:00pm Join Rabbi Kleinbaum and trainers Jamie Bauer and Alexis Danzig for a workshop on legal demonstrations and non-violent civil disobedience. Learn about the history and practice of nonviolent civil disobedience, and why it is a deeply effective and deeply Jewish way of taking action in the face of injustice. Taking this workshop does not in any way commit you to taking part in any action! This course is for CBST members only. Lunch and materials are included. Want to help Puerto Rico? Operation Aqua is providing a reliable source of safe drinking water to families across Puerto Rico. CBST member and AFT President Randi Weingarten is spearheading this effort in conjunction with AFT, AFSCME, Operation Blessing International, and the Hispanic Federation. A $30 contribution provides an in-house purifier that requires no electricity and provides 10+ gallons of safe water per day to a family. $5,000 delivers a generator that can disinfect 150,000 gallons per day, enough safe water for thousands. For donations and more information: https://www.aft.org/operation-agua Support New Sanctuary Coalition Leader Ravi Ragbir Thursday, January 11, 9:00am, Foley Square, at the corner of Lafayette and Worth Streets Our friend and colleague Ravi Ragbir's next required check-in at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices is approaching.
