TORAH MATTERS:

PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Sammy Bergman WHEN GOD HELPS US UPWHEN GOD HELPS US UPWHEN GOD HELPS US UPWHEN GOD HELPS US UP

A lot is demanded of us on Yom Kippur. We abstain from eating, drinking, washing ourselves, anointing ourselves with oils and lotions, and marital intimacy. We spend almost the entire day praying. We examine our actions and confess our sins ten dierent times. Due to these obligations, we may get the impression that we are responsible for bringing about the atonement of Yom Kippur. In this vein, “Day of Atonement,” means the day that God obligates us to atone for our sins. This notion is reflected in the Rambam’s ruling that there is a unique obligation to repent and confess on Yom Kippur (Rambam Laws of Repentance 2:7).

However, there is an additional aspect of the day that requires our attention. Yom Kippur is also a day in which Hashem makes Himself more accessible. Furthermore, on Yom Kippur, Hashem lowers Himself to the sinner to raise them up from their fallen state. This notion is reflected in the first line of the haftarah we read this Shabbat which reads: “Return O Israel to Hashem your God, for you have stumbled in your sin (Hoshea 14:2).” Rabbi Avraham ibn Ezra (ibid.) explains: “Return slowly to Hashem, for you have fallen, and no one can help you up but Him!” Here, God reaches out to the sinner who isn’t prepared to fully rectify his or her sins and is in need of divine assistance. Seen in this light, Yom Kippur isn’t merely a day of obligation, but one of opportunity. As the Rambam (ibid.) describes: “Yom Kippur is a time of repentance for all, and time of pardoning and forgiveness for Israel, therefore therefore therefore therefore everyone is obligated to repent and confess on Yom Kippur.” It is only because God makes Himself available that He demands we capitalize on the chance to return to Him.

If we focus on Yom Kippur as an opportunity to access God as He comes closer to us, we can alleviate the tension and anxiety often associated with the holiest day of the year. Yes, fasting and praying all day can be incredibly diRcult- especially under our current circumstances. However, while we experience the aSiction of Yom Kippur, we can keep in mind that we do not undertake this process alone. On this special day, Hashem returns toward us as well. He helps us up from our stumbles and meets us in our space of struggle and brokenness. May we all merit the experience of: “Return us to You Hashem, and then we will return to You” (Eichah 5:21).
