PARSHA MATTERS - by Rabbi Jesse Shore

IT'S OK TO NOT FULLY UNDERSTANDIT'S OK TO NOT FULLY UNDERSTANDIT'S OK TO NOT FULLY UNDERSTANDIT'S OK TO NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND

The Jewish people, to the extent that we identify as a single entity, are no strangers to discrimination, to prejudice, and to su?ering as a result of racism and bigotry. No non-Jew, who does not identify with the Jewish people, can fully understand our pain. Conversely, neither can they fully understand our joys. To the extent that we can identify the black community as a single entity, this holds true too. And that is okay.

There is nothing inherently wrong with our inability to fully understand "the other.” In his essay on interfaith relations, "Confrontation," Rabbi Solovetichik suggests that this is a feature of the human condition and not a flaw. The tragedy in Minnesota calls on us to reassert profound and universal truths about human dignity and the immeasurable value inherent in all human beings. While we may often make assumptions about what comprises the psyche of another person or another community (with greater or lesser insight) perhaps it is worthwhile to additionally reassert that the only Being Who truly knows and understands how special humanity is, in all of its multifaceted complexity, is Hashem.

If our understanding of one another's stories are limited, on what grounds can we truly support or condemn? If only Hashem knows the innermost workings of our hearts, then who is anyone to judge us?

A solution to this conundrum may be drawn from the prolonged and uncompromising repetition of identical korbanot o?ered in this week's parsha. The person identified with starting the chain of repetition is rightly identified as the second Jewish prince (not the first). Netanel Ben Tsu'ar set a bold precedent in making his o?erings identical to the first prince who came before him. Rashi notes that Prince Netanel convinced his fellow leaders to follow suit. Without losing their sense of individuality, the remaining princes followed Prince Netanel's example (Devarim 7:18).

The Torah's meticulous devotion to this accounting may help to drive home the reality, while there are fundamental values that are uncompromising and uniform for all human beings, that does not also mean that all human beings are completely equivalent. For while each prince's dedication o?ering is identical, each prince is honored and distinguished by the Torah's including their name and tribal association. Every human and every group has a story. Every human has a name.

While we all are di?erent, we can still act with a common purpose. Our own present day distinctiveness and tribal associations notwithstanding, at times history calls on us to uniformly and repetitively rededicate ourselves to universal truths. We must condemn wanton destruction of people's livelihoods, we must condemn racism and bigotry, and above all, we must condemn murder. In uniformly condemning these things, we conversely seek to aRrm and advance individual opportunity, dignity and respect.
